Yeah I got the job, but how do I resign from my current position?

I currently work part time in a shop on the same street that I live on!

It has worked well for me as it gave me the confidence to get back out into the world of employment.

But I have now found a job which offers me much better hours, paid holiday and is best for both me and the dcs.

I need to know how and when I am going to tell her I am leaving!!!!!

I don't want to upset her but I know that it will be a real blow as she has come to rely on me.

That being said she has basically had it all her own way for the last year, and has made my life a little difficult, by cutting my hours without discussing the situation with me and by forcing me to work the afternoon shift which is 2-6 when she very clearly knows that my priorities have always been to be there for the dcs.

We do not have anything written down ie a contract, but I would like to give her as much notice as I can to find someone else to fill my position.

So should I do it in writing or verbally and is it best to do it in the morning or the afternoon?

Any advice greatly appreciated

Golly I am such wimp!!

I would do a letter, but give it to her saying 'I'm really sorry but this opportunity has come up, which suits family life better. I've enjoyed working here, and will make the transition as smooth as possible' etc.

I know it may not be strictly true but i. She will appreciate it and you'll feel better, and ii. you never know when you may need a reference or a job again (sorry!).

Good luck.

Hi, you should normally only have to give the amount of notice as per your payment periods. i.e weekly paid, one week, monthly paid, one month.

Don't be scared, she shouldn't have messed you about. I would do it in writing with a letter similar to the example and in the morning. Good luck and congrats on getting a job with better conditions. She should have been paying you holiday pay anyway it's the law.

Well I did it just now, as I was on the afternoon shift (again!)

I used the letter template.

She took it well and was grateful for the months notice I gave her.

God I really hate doing things like this (sad)

On the up side, I spent the morning at my new job learning the ropes, it was fun and so much better than being here.

Thanks for giving me the courage to do it sooner rather than later (grin)
