Hiya, does anyone know anything about temp teaching contracts? I went back to work sept 09 and worked on a temp contract for a full academic year and am now just finishing this academic year in a different school but the same LEA. My current school want to keep me on for next year but have today given me another temp contract for a year - which they want back, signed, tomorrow!! I just wonder if after 2 years for the same LEA I can ask for a permanent job?? I am considering my maternity rights and the possibility of keeping my job available if I were to have a baby quite soon. Wd be v grateful if anyone knows where I stand - thanks.

Depends who your employer is classed as:

Are you:
a) self employed
b) employed by the different school
c) employed by the LEA

Did your employment lapse? I.e. were you employed Sept to July then Sept to July again?

Did you receive a P45 between the placements.

My understanding is that if there is no break in your employment (the summer hols don't count for teachers as your end date is 31 August) then technically you are considered a permanent employee for mat rights / benefits etc. This all depends upon whether you are employed by the same employer (LEA or Gvnrs if voluntary aided school), as Seeyoukay says.

You are definitely not self-employed. Even a supply teacher works for someone else.
