Who do I tell??

I am planning to start out as a piano teacher in the Autumn.

It would be the only income for my family (single parent)apart from tax credits.

Obviously I have no idea yet how much I may make/how many pupils I'll be able to take on etc. etc.

Does anyone know, who do I inform (for tax purposes) about my income? And do I have to estimate earnings for the tax year, or state my earnings for the previous one?

Or do I not need to inform anyone as long as I earn below a certain amount?

TIA

You will need to contact Inland Revenue (08459154515) to register as Self Employed and they should be able to advise you what else to do. You will then be sent an annual tax return which you will have to fill in, so make sure you keep a record of expenses/income. You will also be responsible for making National Insurance payments. You should also get some Public Liability Insurance and if you will be teaching in your own home you will need to contact your house insurers. It might also be worth getting a CRB check if you haven't already got one.

Thank you tiny.
Do I get public liability insurance from the house insurers then? Or do I need to contact them seperately?
