Am thinking of setting up a small biz...what do you think?

Hello ladies

I have an almost full time job and 2 kids, but I really would like to find a way to start up a small business that is mine.

I have been thinking about setting up a custom made type business, where I create a modern and graphic family portrait prints from supplied family photos.

Could also maybe look into supplying framed prints....but it might start getting expensive...

What do you think? Or how have you set up a little side-line business to generate extra income and also hopefully see it grow into a little solid business?

Right now is not the right time to set up a new business - particularly if it is a leisure or lifestyle business.

You'll find friends and family will say something is a good idea but if it really is going to work it should be possible to start it along side work. How good is the organisation you work for? If you have customers queuing up for your services could you go part time? DH has a new business www.sailaboat.tv which is about one month old. But he hasn't given up the main business. It involved big costs (filming costs) and we know it will work eventually but it is proving tricky to get any low cost publicity. Mail shots and advertising on web sites costs can be very high, particularly if the profile reader/viewers match your product/service.

I asked the local library if I could put some leaflets out (it is promoting a healthy activity/sport - sailing) and was told they won't take any literature for profit making organisations and that included dancing schools. How silly, I know a lady who runs a dancing school and despite running loads of classes it only makes a very small profit - not enough for a summer holiday for her once she has paid the dancer teachers, school hire etc, etc. Timing is everything - so I'd say hold back for a while.

Hi DunDunGirl, I say go for it. For the right business you could do well although I agree with sailaboatgal that you should be cautious. I would take small steps and talk to everyone you meet about your idea to get feedback. Test your market as much as you can and try to get a feel for the potential income you could make and the time and effort required.

I run a couple of small businesses and there is a real niche for local small businesses that provide excellent customer service with that personal touch combined with a professional product or service. The big names just can't compete.

And be clear on your goals. Are you looking to eventually employ staff and grow a large business to sell in the future, or just wanting to replace your salary and have a bit of extra income?

Usually whatever your niche there is a lot of low-hanging fruit that no-one has bothered to pick (or can't even see!) and that could mean enough business for you to make some decent money.

Good luck with what you do and keep us posted.

Thank you both for you advice.

Considering I would not need to outlay any major money to start this little venture up, I may try to test the market.

I have all the computer equipment as I am already a graphic designer and therefore I can also create my own website and promotional material ( ie flyers ).

As it is to be a customised product, i will only work on an order when one comes through, so again, I won't have a need for an outlay of money that may sit there.

Thanks for the advice...makes it all clearer to me that I could probably try this out!

I'll let you all know when I have a website up and running!

This is a bit off topic (apols!), but I'm looking for someone to help get my website up. Where are you based?
