Tell me about telesales jobs please??

I went for an interview today. I was meeting the director and was told there is not exactly a position but they would like to meet me. So I was thinking the job could be sales or admin.

I have not had an office job since having dd 3 years ago. Before that did sales and before that admin.

I did enjoy my sales job. But I have been looking for admin work recently.

Normally I like a good challenge, but after having dd wonder if i should just have a nice stable office job?

What I asking really is if you have done telesales did you enjoy it? Was it easy enough to make the money?

I dont know if I'm just doubting myself as feel less confident after having dd. Also it is so hard to find part time work at the moment that I feel most agencies I speak to nearly put down the phone on me after hearing i want part time work.

Any tips welcome...

What type of telesales is it?

Ronaldinhio · 19/07/2010 14:39

I think you need to be quite thick skinned

newstart2010 · 19/07/2010 22:16

sorry i didnt reply, I have been out today.

Selling stationary...

I'm thinking it could be a way to get into the company and possibly move into another type of job later if the job becomes unsuitable.

I've been in sales before but not sure if i would need to be alot more thick skinned then i am now.

If you have been in sales before then why not give it a shot? Especially as it could get you a foot in the door so to speak. And it's easier to find a better job once you are in one IYSWIM as you wil make more contacts. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks, I was thinking along the same lines

DD got a job in telesales this summer (she's a student)

She lasted 4 days, 2.5 of which were training. Of the seven who started on the same day as her only one is still there after three weeks. A friend who worked there before her left after the same amount of time after being told 'people like you should be taken out & shot, like the Jews'

DD was told there were only two rules, she musn't swear & she mustn't hang up on a customer - it was implied, if not actually said that 'flirting' (possibly euphemism for phone sex) would not be frowned upon - during her very short stint in actual calls, DD was invited to join one potential customer in his bath....

If you are cold calling you need persistence & the hide of a rhino; 'warm' calls are easier, but you would probably have to prove yourself with some sales success before you got put on them.

oh gosh does not sound good.

Can i ask what your dd was selling? As seems strange that someone asked her to join them in the bath.

Phones/phone contracts.

One thing she hated was that the automatic dialling thing would ring the customer from a list, but DD would only pick up the call after they had said Hello - so she would have to say 'Is that Mrs X' or whatever the name on her list was, only to find out it was a man on the other end - she got called stupid a few times because of this. And the lists were often out of date so it could be a completely different nam - I don't know wherte the lists came from, possibly just the voters' list.

newstart2010 · 20/07/2010 14:13

oh no does not sound like fun, i would have left too if i was her...

RustyBear, sounds like your daughter got poor training. It's a shame when there are sales firms that put a lot of effort into their training.

RustyBear · 20/07/2010 17:17

I think you're right Pauline - I think they may be a bit shocked at how fast they are going through the available candidates in the area - when DD quit they tried pretty hard to persuade her not to.

PaulineCampbellJones · 20/07/2010 20:52

I'm in the industry and turnover can be massive on outbound. It's a difficult job as it is, but if the correct training and support is not there then it's impossible. Miserable for the agent and the customer. It's a shame your daughter had a poor experience.
