What Would A Nanny Cost?

Thinking of going back to work, DS2 will be in his pre-school year come Sept.

We survive quite nicely on DH's sal;ary, so as long as I clear £200/month I'll be quite happy.

I would earn approx 21k, full-time.

Are nannies on about 15k?

I think the DSs are a bit young for weeks of holidays clubs in the school hols, so I'm perfectly happy for a nanny to have an easy life during term-time!

Where in the country are you?

TBH I can't see how a nanny could cost that little, even nursery nurses who are massively underpaid get more than that, and you'd have to pay employer's NIC etc. too.

In London you have to earn about £51,000 gross to pay a full-time nanny's gross wages, employer's NIC, insurance, food and activities kitty.

Have you not got any childminders or nurseries near you? Either should be cheaper.

Sorry! I reckon you could probably find a childminder though.

Back in December last year I posted on another Mumsnet thread a worked example of costs of employing a nanny... worth a look: Example Costs of Employing a nanny. Total typical cost I calculated to be around £37,000 for a 5-day per week, live out, qualified experienced nanny.

Costs will vary around the UK and cities (especially London) could easily be +20-25% above the figures in my example.

Nannies are useful if your working hours are different to the norm... so if you need a before 8am start, or a after 6pm finish. Nannies are also more cost effective once you have 3 children. With 2 children, a childminder will often be lower cost - though there are pro's/con's to both kinds of care.

Outside London and the south east nanny salaries seem to be around £18k-£28k.

Maybe a part time nanny/live-in nanny/nanny-share/nanny with her own child would be more like £15k though?
