Registered As Self Employed... How Long Before Start Paying NI & Tax?

My husband sent the forms off over 3 weeks ago, by recorded delivery, and i checked the tracking and have confirmation the forms have been recieved.....

But expected to get a letter confirming he is now registered as Self Employed....

Or is the only confirmation when he has NI contributions direct debited from his acct...and recieves a Tax bill?

I have been self employed for 3 years. Didnt recieve any confirmation but get an NI bill every few months which I pay at the PO. I didnt register for direct debit.

Have an accountant who advises me on tax. Went self employed in Aug and 1st tax bill was the following July. Worth phoning a local accountant just for advise over the phone, sometimes they advise realigning your accountancy year with the governments or keep a differnet year end - this will affect when tax is first due.

NI is paid quarterly - you get a bill.

You will be asked to complete a tax return in April 2011. You will have until Jan 2012 (I think) to do it and then you will have to pay tax as a lump sum by 31 Jan 2012.

best way to do it is to put aside about 20-25% of your earnings each month ready to pay the tax as a lup sum in Jan.

I pay my NI monthly by direct debit £9.40 per month in class 2 and then the class 4 NI (earnings related) is calculated when I submit my tax return. I have an accountant and a tax advisor, but DH and I run several businesses and have partnership returns as well as individual returns.

thanks all.... my dad is an accountant...my brother a tax officer....!!!!.... but i felt embarressed to ask them as i'm sure they 'know it all' and see my ponderings as trivial!!!

My dad is helping DH with his books...but....i wanted to sort as much out myself first.

trouble is...i'm having to use excel spreadsheets- which i hate...as thats supposedly better than handwritten books... however...i'd be happier with a cashflow book!!!!
