It was beyond wonderful for us to visit Belarus in April 2019, meet again some of the children who had come to the UK (Bristol) in 2018 and see our Chernobyl blankets in their homes, just a few of these below. We could see how treasured and loved they were and it renewed our energy and passion for this project. And so we are delighted to say….

Welcome to our Chernobyl Project 2020!

A reminder of why we do what we do is at the bottom. We are launching early as 2020 is going to be even bigger than ever as we hope to reach even more children. Also our first group (Portsmouth arrive at the end of February this year!)

We are in the process of writing to all groups we have previously supported to get an idea of numbers and now have other groups contacting us asking to be on board, and obviously we’d all like to help as many as possible! Now then, this is early days to predict, but we are thinking it is going to be between 175 and 200! Can we do this?! As soon as we know which groups we will be supporting again we will let you know! Hopefully when we come back after Christmas.

Not all groups host every year, but these are the groups we have helped so far, and aim to continue to do so.

Aberdeen
Ayrshire
Bristol
Chet and Waveney (Norfolk)

Swindon
Yeovil and Sherborne

Here’s how you can help for 2020….

Squares. We need SQUILLIONS of twelve inch squares in the Stylecraft Special DK palette as in photo and listed at the bottom of the page, if 12 is too much, 6 inch squares are fine too, just this yarn in these colours please, inc for embellishments so the blankets come together and are consistent for wash and wear. Knit and crochet equally welcome, beginner or expert, as simple or complex as you like, single colour, multi colour. Design of square up to you, but not too lacy, they need to be hardy. Please use a 4mm hook or needles. If sizing is a challenge with your pattern/tension, we prefer them just under sized rather than over!

SO IMPORTANT! Please ensure you knot off every end/colour change very very securely, leave approx a 6 inch tail end and use a needle to sew in. These blankets have to be super sturdy as there is no way back to fix them if squares collapse. All ends must be sewn in.

SQUARES TO BE POSTED TO SOUTHSEA PLEASE

Whole blankets We know some crafters love to make their own whole blankets and this is wonderful! We ask you message us to let us know, so we have some idea of numbers of squares needed. Please use SSDK. Finished blanket size remains the same at 48inches by 60 inches, and please work within the colour palette as this makes it much easier when blankets are gifted. If circumstances change and you can no longer make a whole blanket, LET US KNOW! Thank you so so much x

WHOLE BLANKETS TO BE POSTED TO TEDDINGTON PLEASE.

Last posting to be April 12th, but earlier will be enormously helpful, thank you.

Hugs for Heads 2020

After the success last year, we thought how lovely it would be to send all children a cosy hat to take home with their blanket this year, so introduced Hugs for Heads, if you would like to knit or crochet a cosy child’s hat size age 12 to adult in machine washable yarn, we would love to receive it for them. The pattern is up to you., we do have yarn available, please message us. Posting any time from January 2020!

For anyone who needs, just a quick reminder about the project!

For the last few years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian and Ukrainian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline, Chernobyl Children’s Project and the Friends of Chernobyl’s Children. Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are incredibly high and often visiting children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little. It is a lovely thing for us to do to make these children a special cuddly blanket to take home. One child last year said to his interpreter it was like having a big hug from his Gran. Beautiful.

Thank you so much everyone!

They're lovely fairy, love the bobbles. Also love your pompom rug, did you make it?

Fairyfellowsmasterstroke · 26/02/2020 18:33

Thank you Bear - yes, I made the rug last year.
It was one of those projects that started off small and ended up huge!!

I estimated I needed around 350 pompoms - it turned out I needed nearer 800!!!!!

And woe betide anyone who dares to walk on it - it's for decoration only Smile

800 pompoms! Shock

Okki · 28/02/2020 13:50

Hope it warms up for the Portsmouth Group.

Fairy lovely squares there - and I echo Bear with 800 pom-poms. 😱

I'm gutted, but I'm not going to make Leeds tomorrow. DH's Gran passed away this week, so he's gone home for the funeral and to spend the weekend with his Mum, so I'm in charge of the offspring. Trying to figure out if I can go to Gloucester instead. Have fun everyone and happy chatting and hooking. 🧶 BrewCake

Hi all

👋🏻Back to @DropZoneOne

@KnottyAndPistey
Fabulous blankets aren’t they! thanks for sharing them all with the great photos! Including the gratuitous snow one!!

🌷 to all the talented makers!!

@Bearfrills

BC4 is 3 already?! Nah, can’t be true!!
Hope BC3 is feeling better soon!!

@KnottyAndPistey

I’m really sorry & sad ☹️ but I can’t make it tomorrow.

I was so looking forward to seeing everyone again & putting more names to faces, raffles, lucky dips & lots of chit chat. Not to mention a little crochet 🤣

A few things all conspiring against me, but having woken up with a cold has kind of finished me off! I don’t want to risk passing anything on to any of my lovely WoolyHugger friends, that’s for sure! & to be honest, the thought of a 4 plus hour drive there & then home again (in the wind/rain) isn’t very appealing 😖

I hope you all have a brilliant day! Please have ☕️🍰& 🍸🥃🥂for me! Hopefully the October one is still all a go-go & I’ll see you all then

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 28/02/2020 14:18

@Okki Oh you either 😖. I’m so sorry to hear about DH’s Gran 🌷

My friends Dad died this week too (one of the reasons I was already feeling like I shouldn’t be going).

I’d forgotten all about Gloucester I must re- find the details.

bookbook · 28/02/2020 15:05

aw , so sorry to hear you are not able to come Okki and Chipping ,
It is best to be on the safe side Chipping ,
Okki - sorry to hear about DH's gran :(
I am just starting to pack everything ready - with a little bit of last minute sewing in the hopes of getting one more thing finished for the craft sale .
I need 1 bag for crochet , another bag for food Grin .

TheWoollybacksWife · 28/02/2020 16:50

My condolences Okki and Chipping. I'll be sorry not to meet you both.

I'm seriously contemplating the suitcase on wheels 🤣. I've got a blanket, squares and a little something for the craft sale in one bag and a bag of yarn for the de-stash table. I think I'd be better off sticking it all in a suitcase considering I'm going to be juggling my handbag, my lunch and a WIP to keep me occupied on a 3 hour train journey.

Bearfrills · 28/02/2020 16:57

So sorry for your sad news Okki and the rubbish weather Chipping, the rain has started here and I'm hoping the wind waits until I can get home and collapse down everything in the garden.

BC4 is 3, it's true. She's lush though. Her latest thing is that we have to "choo choo" around the place, I put my hands on her shoulders and we shuffle along while she makes train noises. Luckily she only wants to do it in the house so far.

BC3 has his birthday party tomorrow so definitely no trip to Leeds for me but I'm hopeful that the hug-a-thons are creeping steadily Northwards Grin

WitchDancer · 28/02/2020 17:24

Have a wonderful day tomorrow! One day I will make a Hug-A-Thon but for now I shall look upon the pictures with a touch of jealousy.

My condolences to both Okki and Chipping, my thoughts are with you at this sad time.

First group on Saturday? Oh my word!

bookbook · 28/02/2020 18:10

Woolly - thats what I did when I went to the first one - ( it was our huge going away on hols suitcase .) It worked well :)

TheWoollybacksWife · 28/02/2020 18:33

I think it was your post that inspired me book

I've got lots of little jobs to do tonight to get ready for the weekend. A uniform wash, sewing a button on a cardigan I knitted last week which is part of a christening gift, writing cards and wrapping gifts for the christening and a party DS is off to tomorrow. I also need to make my packed lunch for tomorrow and for some reason I decided that it was a good idea to make banana bread.

HOWEVER, the Wine is open...

bookbook · 29/02/2020 20:29

oh , it was great fun today , lovely to put faces to names .
I seemed to bring home as much as I took though a different bunch of stuff Grin
It was an easy journey home - the wind has really ramped up now , so really glad we didn't have to drive home in that!

TheWoollybacksWife · 01/03/2020 10:59

I agree @bookbook it was a fabulous day. So lovely of you to bring cake too. I didn't buy anything thanks to my self imposed resolution of not buying any more wool until I've made inroads into my stash. Even my difficult journey home didn't detract from my happiness. I was shattered though.

Thanks to @KnottyandPistey for giving up their weekend to organise it. I'm still lobbying for a midlands version at some time in the future 🤞

bookbook · 01/03/2020 12:17

haha @WoollybacksWife - 2 blanket kits in truth !! ( But I did buy a ball of yarn too , and some buttons ...Grin )

Joolly3 · 02/03/2020 14:45

I have some squares ready to send, I just need the address of where to send them.
