We are delighted to be launching our Chernobyl Project 2018!

For the last four years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children’s Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline.

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are incredibly high the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions combined with chronic poverty.

We have spoken to all the groups we sent to last year, some are still confirming their funding etc and not all host every year, but already confirmed are…

Isle of Wight
Peterborough/Helpston
Bristol
Gloucester/Leeds
And we are chuffed to be introducing the Ayrshire group this year too!

There are other groups we can contact, but will just wait to hear from last year first. So this year we look like we are aiming for approx 115 blankets but this may change. It is a good place to start with!

The last posting date for squares and blankets made by individuals for our Chernobyl 2018 project will be Saturday 7th April, to the Teddington address, message if you need it!

No later please as we have to get on and sort very soon after. Thank you.

Please do join us, here’s how..

  • Yarn is Stylecraft Special DK – ONLY this please, inc for any embellishments.
  • Squares to be 12 inch ideally, or 6 inch if that is too much.
  • Knit and crochet equally welcome. Beginner or more experienced crafters also equally welcomed.
  • Please use a 4mm hook or needles. No blocking please, and please ensure you are knotting off very thoroughly when colour changing or finishing, leave a 6cm end and use a needle to sew it in.
  • We are asking folk to avoid using a magic ring (crochet) to start as find that these don’t seem to always stand up to the pressures of wash and wear.
  • Squares to be single colour, multi colour, textured, whatever you like, they will be wonderful, thank you.
  • If you’d like to make a whole blanket, please use these colours too, makes thing easier at the giving stage! Whole blankets need to be 48 inches by 60 inches with some kind of border please.

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected] . Cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address. We are grateful for every single penny.

Hugs for Heads
After the success of Fife last year, we thought how lovely it would be to send all children a cosy hat to take home with their blanket this year, so introduced Hugs for Heads, if you would like to knit or crochet a child’s hat size age 8 to adult (most are teens) in machine washable yarn, we would love to receive it for them. The pattern is up to you., we do have yarn available, please message us. Last posting the same as squares.

What a big ask! Good grief!
But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn’t really come close. xxx

Are the hats ok in any machine washable wool?

I've got loads left from winter hats/scarfs and baby cardis (I like bold colours on the baby) so could do a few hats if that's acceptable to use?

KnottyAndPistey · 30/01/2018 09:09

Absolutely thank you!

Apologies for the withdrawn message. Posted in the wrong place. WH is going for the prize of having the most threads I reckon Grin

decisions, decisions...

do I go with one colour theme or a mixture of colour themes.

I did enjoy looking for all the squares last year, and some similar colours were separated anyway.

dd does not like them clashing, it makes her anxious. (as does everybloody thing on the planet)

Bearfrills · 01/02/2018 09:32

All of the colours Grin

I've gotten nothing done the last few days, sick bug has hit the house Envy

NormansNipple · 01/02/2018 10:47

I've finally made a start! I had to finish some annoying jobs first.

I unexpectedly have a free day today so I'm going to crochet away to my hearts content. If my cat lets me. He's being fussy and keeps getting in the way...

Lovely to see you all Smile

Hi Stitch! It's nice to have a nipple name here, I wouldn't get away with it anywhere else Grin It is just c2c and I'm joining as I go to make a whole blanket. I can't explain the luxuriousness I'm afraid, it must be down to the lighting.

MadisonAvenue · 01/02/2018 18:49

Hi Norm Haven't seen you around for a while, hope all is good with you!

Stitch Bella Coco has some left handed tutorials, not sure if C2C is on there but you may find something helpful

I am yarnless. As predicted I had enough for 6 squares. What was not predicted was that I would achieve that well before payday. Wool Warehouse order going in tonight.

Drop Shock yarnless! Grin

Stitch I’m very right handed so this might be a ridiculous suggestion, but would looking at videos / photos in a mirror help?

DropZoneOne · 01/02/2018 21:00

Spin don't worry, I have kinship yarn just not Chernobs yarn Grin

MadisonAvenue · 01/02/2018 21:20

You had me worried there too Drop

NormansNipple · 01/02/2018 21:51

Madison! I'm good thanks, had a little break from WH but I'm back Grin I love Chernobs, it's the first thing I found on Woolly Hugs and they pull at my heart strings.

Drop I was going to invite you round to choose some of my stash. It's getting out of control. My friend came round last week and said I'm about to disappear under a mountain of wool Blush

Stitch we're on the same level don't worry GrinGrin If you watch the right handed c2c videos and see how it's constructed you should be ok I think. Once you get going it's easy to see where to place the blocks, it's straight on 2 sides and like a staircase on the other where you are working.

diamantegal · 01/02/2018 23:29

Stitch, if you prefer written instructions, try this one - makeanddocrew.com/how-to-corner-to-corner-crochet-c2c-for-beginners/

C2C is ridiculously easy - only two stitches - but for some reason I have to remind myself every time. I managed to do a whole cot blanket for DSis pretty quickly though, so I'd definitely say it's a good fall back if you're after a speedy square.

Norm Chernobs was what made me teach myself to crochet a year ago, hookers seemed to produce squares at a much quicker rate than knitters (and it was true!) so I thought I'd better have a go seeing as we needed so many - I haven't knitted since.

Stitch that always seems to happen to me. If I have the house to myself I think "great, I can crochet" but it never happens, I fill the time with mundane things like housework. Have a restful weekend.

Joolly2 · 02/02/2018 21:02

Hello, just found you all again. I have plenty of wool left over from last year so I will get started now. I wish I had kept a note of how many squares I knitted last year so I have something to aim to beat. I do like a target.

NotAChristmasCakePop · 03/02/2018 16:05

Seeing as I am able to do 2 types of granny squares now Blush I am in. I've ordered some wool which has been dispatched, so that will give me time to finish Iwant's square first.

Going to have a go at a hat too - DS has asked for one, so may as well use his as a practice go....

Jux · 04/02/2018 20:23

Help needed! I was making the butterfly garden square (www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/butterfly-garden-square), finished it but it was too big for a 6" and to small for a 12" so I did a few more rounds, neither increasing nor decreasing. It's gone really wiggly!

I decreased a couple of times on each side and it was a bit better, but really, the wiggle started while I was still following the pattern. I've got it up to 10" now, so a few more rounds to go, but it's still badly wiggly and I don't know whether to leave it and hope that blocking will sort it, or whether I should decrease a few times per side like I did before.

What would you do?

Jux · 04/02/2018 20:23

forgot pic!

UnarmedKoala · 04/02/2018 20:53

I’ve made loads of those squares jux and it is usually a bit wiggly, sure will be fine once joined

BlackeyedSusan · 05/02/2018 01:04

once incorporated into a blanket and held in place by other better behaved shares, my wobbly ones looked ok.

I am attempting a spiral without internet/pattern. autistic ds gets to hog the computer most of hte time.
