We are delighted to be launching our Chernobyl Project 2018!

For the last four years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children’s Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline.

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are incredibly high the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions combined with chronic poverty.

We have spoken to all the groups we sent to last year, some are still confirming their funding etc and not all host every year, but already confirmed are…

Isle of Wight
Peterborough/Helpston
Bristol
Gloucester/Leeds
And we are chuffed to be introducing the Ayrshire group this year too!

There are other groups we can contact, but will just wait to hear from last year first. So this year we look like we are aiming for approx 115 blankets but this may change. It is a good place to start with!

The last posting date for squares and blankets made by individuals for our Chernobyl 2018 project will be Saturday 7th April, to the Teddington address, message if you need it!

No later please as we have to get on and sort very soon after. Thank you.

Please do join us, here’s how..

  • Yarn is Stylecraft Special DK – ONLY this please, inc for any embellishments.
  • Squares to be 12 inch ideally, or 6 inch if that is too much.
  • Knit and crochet equally welcome. Beginner or more experienced crafters also equally welcomed.
  • Please use a 4mm hook or needles. No blocking please, and please ensure you are knotting off very thoroughly when colour changing or finishing, leave a 6cm end and use a needle to sew it in.
  • We are asking folk to avoid using a magic ring (crochet) to start as find that these don’t seem to always stand up to the pressures of wash and wear.
  • Squares to be single colour, multi colour, textured, whatever you like, they will be wonderful, thank you.
  • If you’d like to make a whole blanket, please use these colours too, makes thing easier at the giving stage! Whole blankets need to be 48 inches by 60 inches with some kind of border please.

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Our paypal is [email protected] . Cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address. We are grateful for every single penny.

Hugs for Heads
After the success of Fife last year, we thought how lovely it would be to send all children a cosy hat to take home with their blanket this year, so introduced Hugs for Heads, if you would like to knit or crochet a child’s hat size age 8 to adult (most are teens) in machine washable yarn, we would love to receive it for them. The pattern is up to you., we do have yarn available, please message us. Last posting the same as squares.

What a big ask! Good grief!
But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn’t really come close. xxx

Thanks Cat - done :)

Hello everyone. Haven't been on MN for a couple weeks. Loving all the squares on here.

TwitterQueen1 · 05/03/2018 13:25

MrsJ 'off-piste was meant as a compliment Grin, as in gosh you've been really clever and diverged from the 'standard' granny that I'm doing.

I am trying to copy you by doing a flower pattern in the centre, rather than the usual square but the pattern started talking about 'popcorns' and started with a petal, not the central hole and I got lost.... I started again and made up my own pattern, which is OK I think but not quite what I want - it doesn't look like a flower.

TwitterQueen the above is a lovely alternative to a granny square. Not quite a flower but easy to follow and you can just add rounds to get it up to 12" if needed.

Otherwise try the African Flower tutorial from Bella Coco. It's in 4 parts but takes each stage slowly so you can follow.

Jux · 05/03/2018 16:10

TQ1, at that point, youtube is your friend! Have a look at crochet popcorn (and cluster while you're at it), you'll find lots of demonstrations. That's how I learnt to do them, and I suspect I'm not alone! I still have a bit of a problem remembering how to do a popcorn.... Grin

I like your square, even if it's not quite a flower, and the colours are pretty.

TwitterQueen1 · 05/03/2018 16:47

Thanks Drop and Jux I will do my homework!

Spindelina · 05/03/2018 17:53

I got to the post office today - sent my Chernobyl blanket and squares for all three MN blankets. Two of those squares were knitted, which is quite exciting yes my life is that interesting - I’ve managed to get both hands free enough to knit while feeding DS. I got the Jan Eaton knitted squares book at a charity shop several months ago and now I’m getting to use it! Yay!

diamantegal · 05/03/2018 19:49

Phew! Finished it, apart from a few peskies to sort.

Really enjoyed this pattern - every round is different so a lot less repetitive than some of the 12 inch squares often end up being. I think there's another large square by the same designer, so might try that one next.

MrsJonesAndMe · 05/03/2018 21:06

LOL Twitter I did the Bella Coco puff flower square and then just worked it till it was big enough. I can do a normal granny and a solid granny so was looking for a little challenge - clearly I need to sort the fact that I tried to make DD hand warmers and they've turned out different sizes, so I'm starting again tomorrow night Blush

MrsJonesAndMe · 05/03/2018 21:07

Ooooh, that's pretty DropZone

SallyDog · 05/03/2018 21:40

Shock *diamante" that is beautiful!! Love the colours too.

TwitterQueen1 · 05/03/2018 22:27

diamontegal that is beautiful! Star

DropZoneOne · 05/03/2018 23:05

Wow diamantegal that's fantastic. Ate you able to share the pattern? My chernobs blanket is just granny stripes in a colour palette but I need a patterned 12" to finish my kinship and it's lovely yo see one tried and tested in stylecraft!

diamantegal · 06/03/2018 07:05

Drop, it's this one: zootyowlcards.blogspot.co.uk/2016/07/seaside-winter-blanket-square-6-port.html?m=1

Like a lot of things, it's not as complicated as it looks, just needs a lot of counting!

TheHatOfDoom · 06/03/2018 14:27

I’ve been crocheting squares (mostly granny but I learned v-stitch and am learning c2c) but I miss knitting.

Turns out Jan Eaton has also done a book of 200 knitted squares so I will be tackling some of those. Has anyone tried them? It’s inspiring but perhaps not as much as her crochet squares one.

Okki · 06/03/2018 16:27

diamantegal that's really lovely. I've previously looked at the Port Edward one of hers but haven't tried it yet as it says it comes out at 38 x 38. Did you find getting it to 12" ok?

zootyowlcards.blogspot.co.uk/2016/09/seaside-winter-blanket-square-12-port.html?m=1

Spindelina · 06/03/2018 19:35

Hat yes I’ve done two from the Jan Eaton knitted square book (Ribby & Humbug). They’ve come out dead on 6” with 4mm needles for me, which is helpful!

diamantegal · 06/03/2018 23:21

Okki I found it came out almost bang on 12 inches - but then my tension is fairly tight. It would be easy enough to miss off the last two rounds though, it's already square by that point.

I'm contemplating two hooks vs one - all this talk of knitting has inspired me! I found crochet relatively easy to pick up once I'd mastered the basics, but knitting is a whole other world. Where's the best place to start (other than buying needles, which I might do tomorrow). I guess I need the equivalent of a baby steps granny square tutorial...

Spindelina · 07/03/2018 07:35

Diamente the equivalent of a granny square is garter stitch. Find a tutorial or several (I find pictures easier than video personally), cast on 30 (this will probably come up small but you can add a round of crochet), then knit every row until either you have a square or you want to try purling.

And in @Stitchit ‘s honour, I feel bound to say: you should have the same number of stitches on your needle at the end of each row!

Thanks Spin. I suspect having any stitches on my needle will be an achievement but I'll see how I get on. Quite excited about my trip to the wool shop at lunchtime - little things!

Although I'll have to hide it from DH. I have so many craft binges that require buying new things. But in fairness, the crochet has been ongoing so maybe I'll get away with this one.

Bearfrills · 07/03/2018 13:06

diamante I love that square!

I've got Cub helping me today while I sew in peskies. Her definition of helping differs greatly from mine Grin

Spindelina · 07/03/2018 13:47

I went to check out (not buy) circular needles today, picked up one of them, and a stitch counter to make it up to £5, then I saw the discontinued colour bin and now I have a hidden carrier bag Blush.

diamantegal · 07/03/2018 14:11

I have needles! A whole £2 from Wilkos while I work out if I can do this. And books from the library.

Will report back later once I get back from work - am meant to be changing all the sheets tonight but I think my new toys may be slightly distracting. Being clean can't matter that much...

Spindelina · 07/03/2018 17:59

Ahhh Wilkos. A shop sorely missing here!
