Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017!! So glad to have you on board!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from the Leeds group can be seen here.. and our finished blankets from last year here…

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston,Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! Shock Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. Star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

Thanks Mrs H - I have to confess I haven't always changed direction. Good to know.

How do you feel about knots? Should I be knotting my ends together before I sew them in? It feels much more secure, but there is definitely a lumpy bit.

NorksAreMessy · 07/02/2017 12:34

oooh, thank you for that advice, MrsH...I am guilty of single direction pesky management. I will amend accordingly

pterobore · 07/02/2017 13:05

norks nothing really makes me annoyed as I enjoy doing them so much. Ends can be a bit annoying but I've got to sew in my own ends anyway from joining it, so it's not too much effort!
It's a shame when sometimes the square is finished and the end just has a tiny tail of wool, the end cut too short. I've worked out a way to save these when joining to stop them coming undone. I'd rather be left with a long end to sew in myself!
It's great to do, I love to think of the people and the effort they've put in when I'm joining them

MrsHathaway · 07/02/2017 13:23

Oh yes, it's like a party when you're joining. You're creating a big beautiful thing without doing the hours and hours of work to make the component parts Grin

For a 48"x60" square, and estimating an hour per 6" square, you're joining the equivalent of a couple of working weeks' worth of crafting, minimum. Even at minimum wage that's nearly £600 of work, and that's before you add in the construction time and the cost of the yarn... It's an incredibly valuable thing lying in your lap, so the sense of pride and honour you get in working on it is really palpable.

SoupDragon · 07/02/2017 16:46

I agree that I don't really get cheesed off with anything. Someone somewhere is very proud of whatever square/mostly square they've sent in and has spent time making to for someone else, a stranger. That is all that matters really!

NorksAreMessy · 07/02/2017 17:39

oh, those are REALLY lovely sentiments.

pterobore · 08/02/2017 10:49

Quite often a quote comes into my head when joining squares, it's
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; I needed, it's the only thing that ever has."

Morning loves, just catching up, as always! Brew

Spiral. That's another lovely square you've done! What's that one called? (I can't keep up, it might be one you've posted the name of in other colours, sorry). Does it have a tutorial? I'm coming along, but not ready to tackle 'tutorial free' patterns yet! 😁 I've done a Granny Square this morning and mastered the 'double magic circle' for my attempt at the Marigold.

House looks like a right state, paperwork not done, other crap not done...😬

SpiralArchitect · 08/02/2017 11:57

Chipping Which one? Grin The plum one is Melinda Miller's Versailles pattern and the petrol/spice/turquoise one is Julie Yeager's Sweet and Fair - I got that pattern for free but it seems she's started charging for it now.

Finished the next one - this is the Marigold square in a rainbow palette.

NormansNipple · 08/02/2017 17:16

Spiral that is truly beautiful!

steppemum · 08/02/2017 17:54

Mrs H - love your description of joining. What a lovely way to think of it.

Spiral, loving your squares.

Marcipex · 08/02/2017 20:03

Spiral that's fabulous.

SpiralArchitect · 08/02/2017 20:23
Blush Thank you all for the lovely comments.

It looks complicated, but it really isn't - if you can do all the basic stitches (dc, htr, tr, dtr and chain, though the pattern is in US terms just to be awkward), you can make that square, honest!

I didn't write my palette down upthread, so if anyone's interested, I used lipstick, spice, saffron, kelly green, turquoise, lobelia and violet.

KnottyAndPistey · 09/02/2017 08:21

That's STUNNING!! Beautiful squares, just wonderful, thank you xxxx

Star Half Term here over the next two weeks, so it might be wise to ask for a brief pause in posting, we'd hate for treasures get spend time in the sorting office, looking to restart then towards then end of the month. Thank you! xxx Star

Spiral that marigold square is beautiful and bright. Had some gold DK and have been trying different stitches. I love how the waffle stitch in this colour really does live up to its name. The slightly wonky one at the top is bobble stitch

Spindelina · 09/02/2017 09:53

Lovely textures, Thursday.

I'm trying to crochet the rolling waves pattern on Bella Coco. I've done a few rows, and it's getting bigger. Same number of stitches every row, but I think my tension (particularly in the dtr stitches) is much looser than my foundation chain - my foundation chain will stretch to 12", but the row I've just finished is sitting at about 13.5". So I'm going to have to frog it all.

I'm assuming it's going to be easier to change my tension on the chain to make it looser than to try to fix my tension in the big stitches?

Yddraigoldragon · 10/02/2017 16:51

K and P did you get some squares from me this week? I sent two bags off, one to each address, am wondering if I got it right?

NormansNipple · 10/02/2017 18:47

I was wondering the same dragon, I sent some off recently. I expect they have a lot of parcels to deal with, and I think they have been packing up woollies for the refugee project too.

MrsHathaway · 12/02/2017 00:23

This today. A new pattern for me but I really like it so it will become a staple. Pattern is for 5 mm hook but came out bang on 12" for me on 4 mm and ssdk.

Photo tutorial.
