When we started this project last September we had no idea how enormous it would become and honestly have been blown away by the response. We should have known, folk never fail to amaze. We can't find the words to express how grateful and thankful we are that so many have risen to the challenge. We know we can't help everyone, but will help as many as we can, and each warm item goes to an individual with love and support from us. Just looking at numbers of items we have already sent to refugees in Kurdistan and Lesvos...

Blankets made by individuals - 127
Blankets made using separate 12 or 6 inch squares sent in - 34
Hats - 805
Cardis/ jumpers etc - 90
Footwear - 15
Scarves - 145
Gloves/wrist warmers - 53

What an extraordinary response Thanks

It is the together bit, that's our strength, we are so grateful to everyone for every single stitch.

With your love and support we need to carry on. Every day more desperate folk are struggling in appalling conditions, there is no end in sight. In this next phase we will continue to send to refugees in Kurdistan and Lesvos and will also be supporting Syrian families arriving here, initially through contacts on the South coast.

Can you help us fabulous mumsnetters?

Because it still stands, we have C&P the OP for all crafting info from our first thread, which is here....

As for so many others, we have been moved to tears by the heartbreaking plight of refugees, both in Europe and further afield, and the inhumanity which seems to surround them too often. We have donated, signed petitions on change.org and written to our MPs, and understand the feeling of shouting in the wind, we desperately want to do more.

There is something practical we can do together, and it really will help, but fabulous Mumsnetters, we are going to need your support.

We can get woolly warmth to families in refugee camps in Kurdistan, thanks to the amazing charity Knit for Peace. There are 1.8 million refugees trapped there, most have fled civil wars and ISIS in Syria and Iraq. Winter is coming, it will be even more desperate and absolutely freezing. We are also developing links to get resources to children and families elsewhere, and on their arrival in the UK. We just want to help keep folk warm. We know we can’t help everyone, but we can some.

We really need your help, here’s how…

  • We need 12 inch, or six inch squares. Knit or crochet both equally welcome.
  • Yarn to be used - any good quality acrylic DK, for example Stylecraft special DK
  • Any colour, any style, it is all good.
  • Squares equally welcome if made by beginner or expert. Truly.
  • No one think their's wouldn’t be good enough. They will be.
  • We'd love to receive whole blankets, but absolutely understand time constraints.
  • We’d also love to receive hats and gloves/mittens for any age, baby sized through to adult, the same for jumpers. But appreciate that is a very big ask.
  • If you’d like to donate yarn or funds, let us know - we’d absolutely LOVE to hear from you, we need you too. This will be a real team effort
  • If anyone would like to join in crafting but can’t afford to, please PM us, we can help.

One square, one blanket, a pair of gloves, one warm hat, one step at a time, really every little thing will help. Together we can make a difference.

    Thanks

Sadly we cannot accept items other than home made woolly ones at the moment, if this changes we will come back.

If anyone arrives in this thread and holds similar views to Cameron, no need to post, just move along. This is a positive, humanitarian thread taking positive, humanitarian action.

Do join us on our Facebook page Woolly Hugs and Twitter @Woolly_Hugs - both good ways to keep in touch.

If you'd rather email us than PM we are [email protected]

Thank you doesn’t come close, bless you.

    Star Star Thanks Thanks

Hi all, just checking in briefly to say I've done a few squares for Refugees so far and even graduated onto HATS! Grin
I've so far done 2 for babies/toddlers and am now on an adult sized one.
I've even started on my very first blanket (but I suspect that'll be a longer term project).

Are you still accepting scarves for refugees. I have made some more. It helps me to know them in this depressing and uncertain world but I hope I can still get the scarves to someone I need.

Hi, I've just had ds2 and lots of lovely people have knitted him cardigans...I have far more than he could ever wear so I was wondering whether Woolly Hugs would be able to make use of them? Happy to pay the postage etc to get them wherever they need to be.

They're in a variety sizes ranging from newborn to around 6 months.

Urgent help needed! ⭐️⭐️
We are teaming up with the wonderful Debbie Bliss on a special (and speedy) Refugee project collection. Debbie herself is going over to the Calais area in early December as part of the Help Refugee charity. She would like to take hats and scarves, big, size to fit adult men, cosy and warm, handmade, knit or crochet equally welcome. Can you help? There has to be a quick turnaround. Last posting to be Friday 24th Nov, to South Coast address. Message if you need. We do have some already here which is great, but we’d love to help DB help as many as possible. THANK YOU!! X

What an incredible read! It's been quite a year hasn't it! I'm still in awe that so many Chernobyl blankets were made in such a short period of time, as well as everything else that was going on.

We can't take it all in, gets too much so we just focus on what we need to do at that particular time, so it is amazing to stop and look back

REFUGEE PROJECT UPDATE, MARCH 2018

Having listened to what the agencies are looking for and to make this manageable our end, we have reviewed what we do and are introducing several important changes to our Refugee project. Please read carefully both crafting info and posting info. Thank you so much for your continued support.

Posting info. We are introducing a posting window for this project, please do help us by sticking to this.

From now on our posting window for the Refugee project will be November 1st through until Easter. Please do not post anything for this project out of this window. Thank you!

Our next collection date to aim for…

April 28th, as already agreed, next year it will be Easter weekend. The window then closes until November 1st.

If in the mean time you are desperate to post we recommend sending to Knit for Peace.

Crafting info

PLEASE ALL CRAFTING FOR REFUGEES TO BE IN DARKER UNISEX COLOURS. This includes squares. For children’s clothing these may be bright colours but no pastels please.

We need 12 inch, or six inch squares. Knit or crochet both equally welcome.

Yarn to be used for squares – any good quality acrylic DK, for example, Stylecraft special DK.

Squares equally welcome if made by beginner or expert. Truly.

Please use darker unisex colours ONLY.

PLEASE SEW IN ALL ENDS

We’d love to receive whole blankets, but absolutely understand time constraints. Ideal size is approx 48 by 60 inches.

The smallest size we need for clothing is baby 12 months plus, agencies get overwhelmed with tiny baby things.

We’d also love to receive hats and gloves/mittens from baby sized aged 12 months + through to adult, the same for jumpers, cardigans, scarves/shawls. But appreciate that is a very big ask. For these items, any yarn is fine, from 100% wool to acrylic.

If you’d like to donate yarn or funds, let us know – we’d absolutely LOVE to hear from you, we need you too. This will be a real team effort If anyone would like to join in crafting but can’t afford to, please PM us, we can help

I have a some pink and lilac squares from donated wool that were for the refugee project. They’re not in the suggested yarn for the other projects. What do you think I should do with them? Are there other blankets they could go towards?

Report
KnottyAndPistey · 29/03/2018 10:07

Would still send them, because at the mo at least we have the opportunity to make blankets for refugee families arriving in the UK, thank you so much. xxx

If folk are already working on something, please do send, we realise getting to this is a step xxx

Hello! I hope this is the right thread to post in Smile

I would love to make some squares for the refugee project. I just wanted to ask about colours - how dark do they need to be. Does it have to be really dark colours or are things like Stylecraft Lipstick, Plum or Teal ok? As in not really light so unlikely to get dirty easily?

Also just confirming - is posting from now until 28 April this year?

Thank you!

hello yaela123 - I think you have it all about right - I don't think it needs to be dark, dark , as you say, just not pale /pastels, but bright and cheery . Your colours sound lovely :)

@KnottyAndPistey

Is this colour acceptable for the refugee project? I have a whole pack and have patterns for cardigans and hats in sizes from birth to about 6 years old. I know you don't want baby sizes but what size would be most useful?
