Woolly Hugs: The Babettes, Billie's Blankets and Little Hugs.

This is a continuation of our Little Hug and Billie's Blanket projects.

Little Hugs will continue to go to babies and children who are seriously ill in Yorkhill hospital and Billie's blankets will be sent in Billie's name, via the wonderful charity World Child Cancer, to children undergoing treatment for cancer in low and middle income countries.

Our aim with the Babettes is to make some bigger blankets for older children, both for Little Hugs and Billie's Blankets.
We will still make blankets of other sizes too.

THE BABETTES

The idea is to make a 12 x 12 inch panel, either crochet or knit, that can be added to others to create bigger blankets.
The panel can be made as one piece, or as a combination of squares, stripes or patterned. For example, a large granny square, or 4 six inch squares together, or a panel of stripes.
The design is up to you as long as it isn't too holey and will be fine stitched or hooked to others.
If you choose to use separate squares as part of your design, can we ask that they be either stitched together, hooked as you go, or hooked together with the seam on the back.

Yarn for Babettes: Stylecraft Special DK only, so we know that the blankets will wash and wear well and, unless your tension is very tight, use 4mm hooks or needles.

Colours: your choice although for practical reasons, we advise avoiding white and cream.
Some colour combinations that would work: blues/greens, purples/pinks, spring colours, primary brights, rainbow shades.

If you Google 'Babette blankets', you'll get an idea of what we have in mind once the panels are combined.

***

FOR WHOLE BLANKETS - Little Hugs and Billie's Blankets:

Minimum size: 18 x 18 inches for Little Hugs; 24 inches by 24 inches for Billie's Blankets.
If you would like to make a blanket that is bigger, that would be lovely.
The children we send Billie's Blankets to are aged 0 to 14 and Yorkhill treat children of a similar age so we will need bigger blankets too hence our Babettes.

Colours: Your choice.
Although again for practical reasons, we advise avoiding white and cream.

Things to avoid:
Any embellishments that could scratch delicate skin or could be swallowed.

Materials:
Suggested yarn for Billies Blankets: Stylecraft Special DK, a soft, non-scratchy acrylic yarn.
If you would like to make a whole blanket, you could use a different weight and make of acrylic yarn. The essential thing is that it needs to be soft against sensitive and delicate skin and that it can be washed and dried quickly and easily.
For Little Hugs: As above, plus any of our usual Woolly Hugs woolly wool or yarn that is soft and can be machine washed.

We would also love fleece backed quilts, or edged fleece blankets if you prefer sewing.

As always, we also welcome any 6 inch squares made using the Stylecraft Special DK or any of the usual Woolly Hugs blanket wools.

If you would like to take part in this project but feel you can't due to the costs involved, please PM Pistey and we'll try to help with materials.

As ever, thanks for your support. Thanks Thanks

Oh I have a lot more than three on the go! But if I waited till everything was finished before starting anything new then pregnant friend's baby would likely not get his/her as yet unstarted blanket before he/she started school.

I have lots of ideas of things I'd like to make on the go, and an actual blanket in chunky stylecraft that I'd promised myself I'd have done by Christmas. Lawks!!

Morning Smile

I tried hooking as you go on the train yesterday. It did not go well. Confused

MhW02, that Babette is lovely. How did you managed all those squares?

And all those pesky ends!

Well, the making of the individual squares wasn't the problem, it was actually quite fun because I could see "oh, yet another square completed!" which meant that I felt I was achieving something very quickly! It was the stitching the squares together that was the issue! Four one round squares actually work out slightly bigger than one two round square, and four two round squares work out slightly bigger than one four round square, so it was all a bit squashy.

Also, I didn't find the Stylecraft had great stitch definition which makes the teeny squares harder. I've been making some mini squares in James Brett merino and Rowan pure wool with leftovers from the blankets I've done recently, and those mini squares were much easier to work with than the Stylecraft ones and ended up neater. It evens out with the larger squares, but I thought it was really noticeable with the small ones. Maybe that's just me, though...!

Is it possible to have too many stripes in a Babette panel?

Sewn in eleventy squillion peskies, possibly as much pesky as crochet, and certainly an adventure, and actually it goes rather well with MhW02's.

Have no woolly wool left for another adventure Sad

What are peskies?

I keep meaning to ask, (though realise the answer is probably "no") I have a ball of Stylecraft Wondersoft Merry-go-round left over from a blanket I did for a friend's baby. As it is also Stylecraft, and also 100% acrylic, would it be suitable for a Babette panel or spare squares?

I'm trying to finish off three knitted blankets at the moment, and I'm finding it hard because I've been doing so much crochet for the past few months that my fingers are getting confused and also I've forgotten all the patterns!

peskies are the ends aren't they?

was about to finish my babette but my hook has gone missing and my 2 year old is telling me its goneHmm

Tis a Knottyism Smile

Peskies are indeed the pesky ends one is left with when crocheting or knitting as Anya says. There seem to be a lot involved in a Babette panel!

I've posted mine but forgot to include a note Blush. It's three babette panels and two squares for snorris.

My babette should be posted tomorrow. That will definitely spoil the colour co-ordination and harmonisation of those already received! Grin

And I like the new cover photo on Facebook!

Mhw02, the wondersoft will be fine for this project or single squares - as long as it's DK Smile

2nd babette done Grin

have started 3 but I'm stuck. you know I was saying about ideas beyond my skill I've got a 6 inch granny square with some little flowers and leaves. what the best way of joining them?

Report
KnottyLocks · 17/07/2013 15:29

Apart from glue? Grin

If you are talking about attaching separate flowers, all you need to do is stitch them

Sent too soon!

Stitch them on using either the same colour as the flower or the square so stitches don't show.

I tend to leave long ends on my leaves and flowers and use those to stitch them on with.
