Woolly Hugs Guide to Running

  1. Put down your woolly wool, crochet hooks and needles.
  2. Find your trainers, these are sort of soft bouncy shoe-things that go on your feet.
  3. Find something loose and comfortable to wear, and no we don't mean a caftan.
  4. Open front door and go outside Shock
  5. Put one foot in front of the other with speed and determination!

    YOU are RUNNING!!

If you haven't seen Phase 2 of our Little Hugs, the thread is HERE. We launched this phase as a tribute to beautiful Billie, our lovely MrsDeVere's daughter, who devastatingly died at 14 from leukaemia. We launched this at the time of her 21st birthday and we call the project Billie's Blankets in her memory. In her name, and through World Child Cancer, we will send little blankets to children, starting with Malawi and Bangladesh, who really need a Woolly Hug and to feel loved and looked after.

Alongside Billie's Blankets, we are very keen to send a donation to World Child Cancer, as money is scarce, they really have so little. One of the ways we will do this is by running! In May a Woolly Hugs' team will be running the BUPA London 10k, and we are now looking for runners to enter 5K runs throughout the country.

These are where the 5K runs will take place?.. They are all over!

There are already runners committed to running (BIWI, TantrumsandBalloons,me) in London at Crystal Palace on October 13th, and lovely Fizzy and PrettyBird are running in the Glasgow event on July 27th. We would love folk to join with us, or run at a different venue! There is no minimum age and children can be entered, my daughter is running with me, I say with, she will shoot off like a gazelle and I will lumber along. Happily the website says they love fancy dress

Because World Child Cancer isn't a nominated charity we/they ask that you let them know independently. To take pressure off individuals, and to make this a real woolly community effort we recommend that you use our Woolly Hugs Just Giving page for fundraising. Anything you raise will be marvellous, really, and we will all be able to see how much we can raise together.

Our Just Giving Page is HERE Donations are welcome at any time, huge thanks for those already in.

So please have a think, if you are interested, we would recommend entering soon to avoid disappointment. Let us know when you have entered so we can cheer you on, and please use this thread for support, and general running things Couch to 5K apps and playlists for running spring to mind.

The children that WCC support need all the love and comfort possible. So please, in memory of a sparkling young girl who always thought of others, we'd love you to help us help them.

As ever, thank you so much for your support Thanks

Thinking of Billie and her family Xx

    Knotty and Pistey

    Thanks

Very basic question, Blathers - how do you measure the distance that you have run? How do you know it's 1/2/5K?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 02/02/2013 10:25

BIWI - on lots of the apps for C25K there is a GPS thingy built in which will tell you. Have you sorted an app?

These days I have a posh watch which tells me my distance, time and pace as I run. It was a Christmas present this year so I've been using it for the last month. It's great but not cheap. I also joined a running club (ours has a fab beginner to 5k course and is only £30 a year) and they have various set runs which we do of various lengths. Having someone to run with at this time of year is really good as I feel a lot safer running in a group when it's dark. I believe most Sweatshop stores have a running club and they are free and also welcome beginners - details here

Previously, well, Parkruns are easy as they're pre-measured and timed so I knew I was doing 5k and they record everyone's times on the parkrun website and email you with your time and position and tell you if you've got a PB. For runs on my own, there is a route measuring facility on google maps which I used to plan out a run near home which would give me a reasonable idea of the distance I'd done. I started with a 2.5k route and just tried to run as much of it as possible but always completed the distance even if I had to walk some. Then I doubled/tripled it etc. There are also various websites //www.mapmyrun.com, //www.runmyroute.com, //www.walkjogrun.net where people will post details of their own measured runs which you can then follow

Brilliant - thanks!

Also, if you do have a Parkrun nearby, don't feel like you have to be able to run 5k before you try it. LOTS of people run/walk and the marhsalls and organisers will stay for as long as it takes to get everyone in. There will be a back marker to make sure no-one is left behind and no-one begrudges waiting because we've all been there and understand (all the marshalls will be runners who have volunteered). It can be very inspiring to run in a group and it's great to see your PB come down on the Parkrun website :)

See, I don't think I'll be able to do all 8 on day 1 either. But I will give it a go.
I am also going to dust off my gym membership card and we are going to do the gym thing as well. Apparently.
I'm sure it will be fine

You are very welcome to come train with us if you are nearby, my ds1 would live it. He'd probably laminate you your own personal plan Grin

SW London - probably a bit too far away to realistically expect to train together!

When I first started running many moons ago I always used to run in the dark so no-one could see me Blush

When I did a new run/extended a run, I used to get home, get in the car and go out and measure it! Grin As I got better, I also got to know the pace that I ran at, so if there were bits that were on paths, I could judge how far they were.

Being ancient, this was of course before the days of Google maps and apps Blush

Ooh, I'm in N. London

I was desperate to get out for a run this morning, having been scuppered by snow and one cold after the other since Christmas. But I have a blocked milk duct and went to bed last night feeling alternately shivering cold and boiling hot. If I'm feeling fine tomorrow I'll definitely go out though. I miss running!

Go Woolly Hugs runners! I'm not built for running, but am here to add my support.

There needs to be more talk about outfits to distract you from the stress of training. The nork hat idea would certainly get everyone noticed but how about adopting the butterfly motif which is on the Billie's Blanket label? It would make a lovely brooch on a running vest.

I can get ds1 to laminate you a nice healthy eating plan if you like MrsD

He asked me what we were having for dinner tonight.

When I replied, whatever takeaway your father brings home when he finished work he said you know you won't be able to eat loads of junk when we start training don't you?

No, I did not know that at all
There was no mention of no chips when he was drawing up this training plan.
Or they may have been.....I stopped listening after about 10 minutes. He was making me tired just listening to what he was going to make me do.

Well I'm signed up thanks to Pistey. I have promised to wear lurid pink AND a knitted nork on my head. I'm adding a touch of glam with some wings too.

BIWI - we should meet on the Common for a walk run, give the locals a giggle anyway.

DD3 knows I'm doing it, she also knows that Pistey's DD is doing it and suggested she could go on her shoulders. I think not, but I like her idea.
