Woolly Hugs Guide to Running

  1. Put down your woolly wool, crochet hooks and needles.
  2. Find your trainers, these are sort of soft bouncy shoe-things that go on your feet.
  3. Find something loose and comfortable to wear, and no we don't mean a caftan.
  4. Open front door and go outside Shock
  5. Put one foot in front of the other with speed and determination!

YOU are RUNNING!!

If you haven't seen Phase 2 of our Little Hugs, the thread is HERE. We launched this phase as a tribute to beautiful Billie, our lovely MrsDeVere's daughter, who devastatingly died at 14 from leukaemia. We launched this at the time of her 21st birthday and we call the project Billie's Blankets in her memory. In her name, and through World Child Cancer, we will send little blankets to children, starting with Malawi and Bangladesh, who really need a Woolly Hug and to feel loved and looked after.

Alongside Billie's Blankets, we are very keen to send a donation to World Child Cancer, as money is scarce, they really have so little. One of the ways we will do this is by running! In May a Woolly Hugs' team will be running the BUPA London 10k, and we are now looking for runners to enter 5K runs throughout the country.

These are where the 5K runs will take place?.. They are all over!

There are already runners committed to running (BIWI, TantrumsandBalloons,me) in London at Crystal Palace on October 13th, and lovely Fizzy and PrettyBird are running in the Glasgow event on July 27th. We would love folk to join with us, or run at a different venue! There is no minimum age and children can be entered, my daughter is running with me, I say with, she will shoot off like a gazelle and I will lumber along. Happily the website says they love fancy dress

Because World Child Cancer isn't a nominated charity we/they ask that you let them know independently. To take pressure off individuals, and to make this a real woolly community effort we recommend that you use our Woolly Hugs Just Giving page for fundraising. Anything you raise will be marvellous, really, and we will all be able to see how much we can raise together.

Our Just Giving Page is HERE Donations are welcome at any time, huge thanks for those already in.

So please have a think, if you are interested, we would recommend entering soon to avoid disappointment. Let us know when you have entered so we can cheer you on, and please use this thread for support, and general running things Couch to 5K apps and playlists for running spring to mind.

The children that WCC support need all the love and comfort possible. So please, in memory of a sparkling young girl who always thought of others, we'd love you to help us help them.

As ever, thank you so much for your support Thanks

Thinking of Billie and her family Xx

Knotty and Pistey

Thanks

Week one, run 2 completed.

Pass the wine and chocolate now please.

5madthings · 06/02/2013 20:00

Yay well done tantrums passes Wine and maltesers..

I have tajen my trainers off and discovered that i got a blister and it bled!! I didnt notice it when running. Anyway will go to the running shop and tge guy there makes you run on a treadmil and looks at bare feet foot impressions?! To find a style that suits. My trainers are quite old and i got them for aerobics rather than running.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 06/02/2013 20:12

Great to see all this progress Grin.

5mad - it's really important to get the right shoes to avoid injuries. Once you know the brand/style that fit you best you can usually find them on line cheaper than in sports shops, especially if you go for last season's model/colour. I just paid half the shop price on Amazon for mine.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 06/02/2013 20:19

I agree about avoiding injuries, definitely need good trainers.

Tantrums, don't worry, tis not much further to go now on the programme

I shall go to the runminh shop tomorrow then and if they are mega expensive will look online. I only have size four feet so i can often get childrens sizes and save on vat. I dont mind paying a reasonable amount if it means no blisters, my lovely new running socks have blood on them :( it doesnt hurt tho?!

BIWI · 06/02/2013 20:28

Sports Direct are doing 10% off their trainers at the moment. I bought a pair of Karrimor trainers that were originally only £20 and got them for £18.

I know it's not the same as having your feet measured by a proper running shop, but they are not a bad make, and are comfortable trainers. Good for starting out, anyway.

Blatherskite · 06/02/2013 20:32

You definitely need a gait analysis and proper shoes. I used to get really bad shin splits but a proper pair of shoes and they've never been back

5madthings · 06/02/2013 20:48

The guy that owns the local running shop is a marathon runner himself and seems to know his stuff. Dp ran the london marathon last yr and he got his trainers from there and has had no problems. There is also a sports shop in town that meg went to so i may try both. I feel quite energised after my run Grin oh and ds2 wants to run with me, i have said he can come on a daytime run at the wkend but its too dark in the evenings as he is 10 and i dont want to be worrying about him.

If anyone suffers from Achilles tendon pain or recurring bouts of Achilles tendinitis (as I do or did), then it is worthwhile considering getting sorbothane insoles. They help absorb impact - and if you can put them in on top of the existing insole (depends on the type of insole), it can help raise the heel relative to the back of the shoe, which can often in itself be contributing to Achilles tendon problems.

Morning all.

Week one run 3 completed this morning. At 6:15am

And next week gets harder doesn't it?

Oh well. I'm still here. Haven't passed out yet. Yet. Grin

prettybird · 08/02/2013 08:32

Congratulations tantrums . Respect for going out so early - it's not something I could ever do Wink except when I was in full running mode training for a marathon and genuinely couldn't fit in any other time

It will get easier!Smile

5madthings · 08/02/2013 08:34

Go tantrums very impressed at an early morning run!

I am off to toddlers and will do week one, run three this afternoon.

TantrumsAndBalloons · 08/02/2013 08:53

I didn't want to do it tonight, that's all Grin

I wanted to come home from work and relax.

Ds1 runs at that time every morning, it wasn't too bad actually. I was surprised. It was very cold though.

BIWI · 08/02/2013 08:55

6.15 - respect!

I did my third run yesterday afternoon. It seems a long time to wait until starting week 2, which will be on Sunday for me. Although I have realised this is to make sure that week 2 starts on the same day of the week as week 1, which will make it less confusing!

Week 2 is 6 x 1.5 minute runs, with a 2 minute walk in between. I'm interested that you get longer to recover in between.

TantrumsAndBalloons · 08/02/2013 09:07

I think I'm going to need the longer recovery time Grin

BIWI · 08/02/2013 09:08

What will happen by the time we're running 5K?

Run for 1K, walk for 3K ... Grin

MegBusset · 08/02/2013 09:21

Not likely to get out today as have vomitous DS2 at home. Tomorrow hopefully!

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 08/02/2013 15:07
Grin

I never got as far as running 5K in the time available on the podcast - as Pistey used to wisely say on our C25K thread, it's not to get you running for 5K, it's to get you running for 30 minutes Grin.

Pretty - respect to you and your marathon!

5madthings · 08/02/2013 16:14

I have new trainers!! Very cool and comftpy, the guy in the shop was great and he showed me a way of doing my laces which means no slipping tho the new trainers fit much better than my old ones so I don't think they would rub anyway. Just waiting for my phone to charge and then I shall go out for my run, hoping the rain/snow/sleet we have had this afternoon holds off...

BIWI · 08/02/2013 17:08

Running for 30 minutes just seems so far away at the moment! I did 2 minutes on the treadmill at the gym today, as part of my session, and actually that was very doable, so I'm going to increase that next time I go.

5madthings · 08/02/2013 19:09

Week one, run three done in the sleet and snow no less!

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 08/02/2013 19:17

Well done 5mad and BIWI!

BIWI · 08/02/2013 19:45

Blimey - that's dedication to the cause, 5madthings!
