This is Phase 2 of the Little Hugs project.
Since the beginning, the aim of the Little Hugs has been to provide little blankets that give comfort to babies and small children who are seriously ill in hospital. Hopefully, Phase 2 will continue to do this and more.

We are launching this phase as a tribute to beautiful Billie, our lovely MrsDeVere's daughter, who devastatingly died at 14 from leukaemia. This is the time of her 21st birthday and we are calling the project Billie's Blankets in her memory. In her name, we will send little blankets to children who really need a woolly hug and to feel loved and looked after.

We have been talking to this wonderful organisation World Child Cancer and are arranging for Little Hugs to be sent to children suffering from cancer in low and middle income countries. In these countries their overall chance of survival can be under 10% compared to around 80% in high income countries such as ours.
The first batch of Billie's Blankets will be taken to children in Malawi and Bangladesh.

World Child Cancer's response to our initial idea is below:

'Thank you for your email and your kind offer of support. Your blankets are beautiful and I'm sure they provide great comfort to the children who you make them for.
I'm sure the children would love them. Unfortunately most of the children we see at our projects are not able to survive their cancer due to the poor conditions, lack of knowledge and the high cost of medicine in the worlds poorest countries. In these cases we encourage palliative care for the children through our twinning partners who provide training for local project staff on the importance of this care, especially in pain relief. Psychosocial care is also very important and an area we focus on through supporting parent groups and play therapists. I think your blankets would fit in well with this area.'

How you can help:

By crafting:
You can help by either making a whole Little Hug (see yarn spec)
Or
By making 6" squares, either knitted or crocheted, using Stylecraft Special DK yarn

Or by donating for crafting materials:
If you would like to contribute towards materials, you can either donate via Paypal here on our Woolly Hugs website or if you do not have Paypal, please PM RatherBeOnThePiste.

Or by donating to World Child Cancer (see below)

*

For all Little Hugs:

Minimum size: 24 inches by 24 inches
If you would like to make a blanket that is bigger, that would be lovely.
The children are aged 0 to 14 so we will need bigger blankets too.

Colours: Your choice.
Although for practical reasons, we advise avoiding white and cream.

Things to avoid:
Any embellishments that could scratch delicate skin or could be swallowed.

Materials:
Suggested yarn: Stylecraft Special DK, a soft, non-scratchy acrylic yarn.
If you would like to make a whole blanket, you could use a different weight and make of acrylic yarn. The essential thing is that it needs to be soft against sensitive and delicate skin and that it can be washed and dried quickly and easily.

If you would like to take part in this project but feel you can't due to the costs involved, please PM Pistey and we'll try to help with materials.

***

Alongside Billie's Blankets, we are very keen to send a donation.
Money is scarce, they really have so little. In May a Woolly Hugs' team will be running the BUPA London 10k, and we have ideas for a craft fundraiser later in the year.
We have set up a Just giving Page here
Your donation is welcome at anytime.

These children need all the love and comfort possible. So please, in memory of a sparkling young girl who always thought of others, we'd love you to help us help them.

As ever, thank you so much for your support Thanks

Thinking of Billie and her family. x

might be an idea though, pub lunch, walk pub dinner. Sounds very civilised for a sponsoered walk, maybe some hard walking then a celebration in the pub is best dont want people thinking we are doing this just for the pub grub and booze!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/01/2013 14:56

It has got to be done!!

That is in reference to the auction but the pub crawl sounds good!

KnottyLocks · 19/01/2013 14:57

I'll start training today.

right I shall continue to have a think about this walk while I crochet my little hug.

GlaikitFizzog · 19/01/2013 15:12

Right, well I think I am too unfit far away to join in any physical challenges, but I am willing to put my neck out here and set my own challenge. I will knit and hook together my own Billie Blanket. I will need some assistance with the hooking part, but I think it's something I need to learn.

KnottyLocks · 19/01/2013 15:21

Fizzy, good challenge! plenty of us here to talk you through the hooky bit Smile

I'm loving the way this has gone from 10K to 5K to a walk to a pub crawl!

BigStickBIWI · 19/01/2013 16:19

How about a sponsored sit down and a nice cup of tea?

BigStickBIWI · 19/01/2013 16:19

KnottyLocks · 19/01/2013 16:25

Maybe a Cakeathon? Grin

AnathemaDevice · 19/01/2013 16:37

Now I'm sure I could commit to a cakeathon!

NorksAreMessy · 19/01/2013 16:45

Oooh, did someone say cake?
I can make a cake look like knitting, if anyone needs me to :)

BigStickBIWI · 19/01/2013 16:49

Oh no. Too many carbs in cake [virtuous]

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/01/2013 17:00

GinAthon?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/01/2013 17:11

We have more lovely donors to thank. Thanks

Honestly you are marvellous, and your donations will help bring comfort to many children, bless you. ThanksThanksThanksThanksThanks

Thanks MrWubbly - our own lovely Wubbly's husband X

And three lovely donors who remain anonymous, two from last night at 8.05pm and 8.40pm, and one this lunch time at 1.38pm. You will know who you are, we have emailed our thanks, but THANK YOU if you are reading this.

Also huge thanks to those who have been donating on our Just Giving Page
Rather astonishingly, we are already up to £220. Shock

Such an amazing response for Billie's Blankets, we are quite blown away.

Sometimes just saying "Thank You' doesn't seem enough, but thank you to everyone Xx

TantrumsAndBalloons · 19/01/2013 17:18

I really wanted to sign up for the run but I've only just found this thread and it's full :(

I'm marking my place in case there are any others. I can't do any crafty stuff but I can sort of run. I would love to join in whatever is happening.

Hugs to MrsD. And all the lovely people on this thread.
You are all bloody amazing.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/01/2013 17:22

We are looking to find another run Tantrums, maybe a 5K. There were quite a few who would have liked to join in. Leave it with us for a bit. Are you on our Facebook page or Twitter, MNWoollyHugs or @MNWoollyHugs? We will link from there when we are organised.

And thank you X

TantrumsAndBalloons · 19/01/2013 17:25

Thanks pistey I will look out for the 5k.
probably better than 10k

BigStickBIWI · 19/01/2013 17:31

A ginathon you say ...

BigStickBIWI · 19/01/2013 17:32

I'll tell my trainer that's what I'm training for Grin

GlaikitFizzog · 19/01/2013 17:45

I've just checked and my nearest town has a 10k and 5k in June. 300 places, 289 and 297 still available. How realistic is it that I could train in 5 months to not die to run 5k?? I am seriously unfit.

BigStickBIWI · 19/01/2013 18:31

If you train regularly I would have thought you would be ok. Have a look at the Couch to 5K threads. That involves running every other day, but starting really slowly and working your way up. Day one you run for a minute and then walk for 90 seconds, and do that 8 times.
