This is Phase 2 of the Little Hugs project.
Since the beginning, the aim of the Little Hugs has been to provide little blankets that give comfort to babies and small children who are seriously ill in hospital. Hopefully, Phase 2 will continue to do this and more.

We are launching this phase as a tribute to beautiful Billie, our lovely MrsDeVere's daughter, who devastatingly died at 14 from leukaemia. This is the time of her 21st birthday and we are calling the project Billie's Blankets in her memory. In her name, we will send little blankets to children who really need a woolly hug and to feel loved and looked after.

We have been talking to this wonderful organisation World Child Cancer and are arranging for Little Hugs to be sent to children suffering from cancer in low and middle income countries. In these countries their overall chance of survival can be under 10% compared to around 80% in high income countries such as ours.
The first batch of Billie's Blankets will be taken to children in Malawi and Bangladesh.

World Child Cancer's response to our initial idea is below:

'Thank you for your email and your kind offer of support. Your blankets are beautiful and I'm sure they provide great comfort to the children who you make them for.
I'm sure the children would love them. Unfortunately most of the children we see at our projects are not able to survive their cancer due to the poor conditions, lack of knowledge and the high cost of medicine in the worlds poorest countries. In these cases we encourage palliative care for the children through our twinning partners who provide training for local project staff on the importance of this care, especially in pain relief. Psychosocial care is also very important and an area we focus on through supporting parent groups and play therapists. I think your blankets would fit in well with this area.'

How you can help:

By crafting:
You can help by either making a whole Little Hug (see yarn spec)
Or
By making 6" squares, either knitted or crocheted, using Stylecraft Special DK yarn

Or by donating for crafting materials:
If you would like to contribute towards materials, you can either donate via Paypal here on our Woolly Hugs website or if you do not have Paypal, please PM RatherBeOnThePiste.

Or by donating to World Child Cancer (see below)

*

For all Little Hugs:

Minimum size: 24 inches by 24 inches
If you would like to make a blanket that is bigger, that would be lovely.
The children are aged 0 to 14 so we will need bigger blankets too.

Colours: Your choice.
Although for practical reasons, we advise avoiding white and cream.

Things to avoid:
Any embellishments that could scratch delicate skin or could be swallowed.

Materials:
Suggested yarn: Stylecraft Special DK, a soft, non-scratchy acrylic yarn.
If you would like to make a whole blanket, you could use a different weight and make of acrylic yarn. The essential thing is that it needs to be soft against sensitive and delicate skin and that it can be washed and dried quickly and easily.

If you would like to take part in this project but feel you can't due to the costs involved, please PM Pistey and we'll try to help with materials.

***

Alongside Billie's Blankets, we are very keen to send a donation.
Money is scarce, they really have so little. In May a Woolly Hugs' team will be running the BUPA London 10k, and we have ideas for a craft fundraiser later in the year.
We have set up a Just giving Page here
Your donation is welcome at anytime.

These children need all the love and comfort possible. So please, in memory of a sparkling young girl who always thought of others, we'd love you to help us help them.

As ever, thank you so much for your support Thanks

Thinking of Billie and her family. x

curryeater, it's going to depend on your tension (i.e. how tightly you knit). Best thing to do would be to cast on 33 (or 34!) stitches, knit a bit and measure.

I made two Granny Squares last night! So quick and fun to do and they look very colourful. I never thought I would love crochet but my fingers are itching to do more!

Crochet is the future Grin

Am Grin at BIWI here.

I'm finished my first one. The picture should be on my profile now. I think it looks great.

BIWI · 11/02/2013 13:12

Cant see your profile!

Schooldidi · 11/02/2013 13:15

Can you see it now? I keep forgetting that I need to make it public after each name change.

BIWI · 11/02/2013 13:21

Wow! That's fab!

BornToFolk · 11/02/2013 13:47

I think that looks great too! Is is knit or crochet? I can't tell from the photo.

I've done 12 Granny Squares and still loving it! I can't believe how quickly they are going!

I'm glad you all like it. I could go much quicker if I did basic granny suares but I get bored (and I'd run out of wool quicker too), so I try to find a different pattern for each blanket if I can.

EllenJaneisstillnotmyname · 12/02/2013 22:29

That's really lovely, didi. Smile Great colours. Looks African, somehow?

I've just finished my blanket, will take a photo later. Can I post it a bit later with my angel hug that I've just started?

EllenJaneisstillnotmyname · 12/02/2013 22:47

Put my photo on my profile page. I might retake the photo in daylight, tomorrow, the colours don't look right.

TheWoollybacksWife · 13/02/2013 08:39

I have finished my second blanket and will post it later in the week. There is a picture on my profile page in anyone wants to take a peek.

I don't know if there is something wrong with my settings or it is just something to do with my iPad but every time I upload a photo it puts the new photo at the top of the page and then overwrites the second photo with a copy of the new photo. I have used my extensive technical knowledge and removed all photos except the most recent one.

BIWI · 13/02/2013 09:44

That's really beautiful, TheWoollybacksWife.

Schooldidi · 13/02/2013 09:47

That looks lovely Ellen. I've adjusted the colours in my head to what I think they are.

Yours is gorgeous too Woolly. I really do like the butterfly garden pattern.

BornToFolk · 13/02/2013 10:09

Beautiful blankets, Ellen and Wooly!

Well, I've done 16 Granny Squares so I should technically be done but they are all just a smidge under 6" square so I think I'm going to do one more round on each, then seam and do the edging. They do look nice all laid out though!

Woolfey, mine has migraine inducing colours. Grin Purple, turquoise, aqua and grey. I'd preferred to use a light neutral colour instead of the grey but remembered the instructions to avoid white or cream for these blankets.

Woolly, I'm having the same problem with the photos, I've uploaded a daylight picture and lost last night's.

Your blanket is beautiful, love both patterns. Smile

Looking forward to your pictures, BornToFolk.

TheNinjaGooseIsOnAMission · 13/02/2013 13:15

these all look fab! I'm on the last square of mine so will hopefully have it finished in the next couple of days Smile

How big are your squares MrsD? Mine are just shy of 6" so I need 16 for a 24" blanket.

You can keep going and make a massive Granny square. My mum made a blanket for my niece like that, it's really lovely!
