This is Phase 2 of the Little Hugs project.
Since the beginning, the aim of the Little Hugs has been to provide little blankets that give comfort to babies and small children who are seriously ill in hospital. Hopefully, Phase 2 will continue to do this and more.

We are launching this phase as a tribute to beautiful Billie, our lovely MrsDeVere's daughter, who devastatingly died at 14 from leukaemia. This is the time of her 21st birthday and we are calling the project Billie's Blankets in her memory. In her name, we will send little blankets to children who really need a woolly hug and to feel loved and looked after.

We have been talking to this wonderful organisation World Child Cancer and are arranging for Little Hugs to be sent to children suffering from cancer in low and middle income countries. In these countries their overall chance of survival can be under 10% compared to around 80% in high income countries such as ours.
The first batch of Billie's Blankets will be taken to children in Malawi and Bangladesh.

World Child Cancer's response to our initial idea is below:

'Thank you for your email and your kind offer of support. Your blankets are beautiful and I'm sure they provide great comfort to the children who you make them for.
I'm sure the children would love them. Unfortunately most of the children we see at our projects are not able to survive their cancer due to the poor conditions, lack of knowledge and the high cost of medicine in the worlds poorest countries. In these cases we encourage palliative care for the children through our twinning partners who provide training for local project staff on the importance of this care, especially in pain relief. Psychosocial care is also very important and an area we focus on through supporting parent groups and play therapists. I think your blankets would fit in well with this area.'

How you can help:

By crafting:
You can help by either making a whole Little Hug (see yarn spec)
Or
By making 6" squares, either knitted or crocheted, using Stylecraft Special DK yarn

Or by donating for crafting materials:
If you would like to contribute towards materials, you can either donate via Paypal here on our Woolly Hugs website or if you do not have Paypal, please PM RatherBeOnThePiste.

Or by donating to World Child Cancer (see below)

*

For all Little Hugs:

Minimum size: 24 inches by 24 inches
If you would like to make a blanket that is bigger, that would be lovely.
The children are aged 0 to 14 so we will need bigger blankets too.

Colours: Your choice.
Although for practical reasons, we advise avoiding white and cream.

Things to avoid:
Any embellishments that could scratch delicate skin or could be swallowed.

Materials:
Suggested yarn: Stylecraft Special DK, a soft, non-scratchy acrylic yarn.
If you would like to make a whole blanket, you could use a different weight and make of acrylic yarn. The essential thing is that it needs to be soft against sensitive and delicate skin and that it can be washed and dried quickly and easily.

If you would like to take part in this project but feel you can't due to the costs involved, please PM Pistey and we'll try to help with materials.

***

Alongside Billie's Blankets, we are very keen to send a donation.
Money is scarce, they really have so little. In May a Woolly Hugs' team will be running the BUPA London 10k, and we have ideas for a craft fundraiser later in the year.
We have set up a Just giving Page here
Your donation is welcome at anytime.

These children need all the love and comfort possible. So please, in memory of a sparkling young girl who always thought of others, we'd love you to help us help them.

As ever, thank you so much for your support Thanks

Thinking of Billie and her family. x

Knotty and Pistey

Thanks Shredded, really helpful. I usually take my Kindle but want something to do during take off and landing, as you have to turn it off and I feel like that time is wasted.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 22/01/2013 20:31

MrsDV, thank you for your explanation on the first page. Thanks

Good luck runners and knitters. I have sponsored you cos I'm neither Grin

A bit of help, please...

The postman staggered up the drive with my Deramore's parcel this morning. (As an aside he was wearing shorts! It was -4 with 6" of snow on the ground)

I have started this pattern but I am worried that it won't turn out as neat as the ones on Ravelry. My other option is a ripple. Should I frog the log? Grin

GlaikitFizzog · 22/01/2013 21:41

I love the log cabin blankets, I've done a few already, simple but effective. They turn out surprisingly neat. I gave up on the pattern I was following and just kept turning and knitting! I'm Glaikit on ravelry and there are pics on my profile if you want to take a squizz.

KnottyLocks · 22/01/2013 21:44

Woollyback, there are some lovely pics of log cabin blankets in the Little Hugs album on the Facebook page. They are gorgeous.

No need to frog that log!

Your blankets are lovely Glaikit.

I have just joined the Woolly hugs group under my Ravelry name of Angelpantser (Stoopid name but don't know if I can change it)

I will persevere with the log.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 23/01/2013 05:06

Ohhhh log cabins. Next on my list, after:

Finishing DS2's blanket (10 x 8 squares - trib was right when she warned me I'd get bored of knitting them. I have 5 more to do, about 10 gazillion pesky ends and a lot of making up to do);

Starting DS1's blanket (ripple in his football team's colours);

An Angel Hug; and,

A Billie's blanket.

MOSagain · 23/01/2013 12:59

postman has just paddled up the pathway of slush to bring woolly treasure

Jacksmania · 23/01/2013 18:03

Woot!!! I've just found the best deal on Stylecraft Special DK on eBay. There's a mixed sampler of 17 colours, no white, 100 gm balls of yarn, for GBP 25.50.
At least that seems like a good deal to me? It works out to around CDN$40 , which makes it about CDN$2.50 per 100 gm ball of yarn. I find a 50 gm ball makes four 6" squares so 100 gm would make 8, and it takes 16 squares to make a 24" square blanket, so two balls of yarn - that could make up to eight 24" square blankets! If I've done the maths right.

Does that sound good? If yes, I'm ordering it greedy to get started :)

GlaikitFizzog · 23/01/2013 18:19

Hang fire Jacks, that sounds like the attic 24 pack we've all Been encouraged by Pistey been buying. Check out deramores, masons and somewhere else I can't think of right now. How much will shipping be? That's 1.7kg of wool.

BornToFolk · 23/01/2013 18:22

Ooh, that is a good deal! I may get a pack myself. I've cracked crochet! Well Granny Squares at least, so I want to do a Granny Square blanket for Billies blanket, and this pack would be perfect!

GlaikitFizzog · 23/01/2013 18:24

Deramores have the same pack with 15% using code dk15 for $45.49 Canadian including shipping.

GlaikitFizzog · 23/01/2013 18:26

It's £23.37 in the uk born. Add something to bring it over £25 and its free shipping.

GlaikitFizzog · 23/01/2013 18:26

I am jot a deramores rep btw! Just a bargain searcher outer!

GlaikitFizzog · 23/01/2013 18:30

GlaikitFizzog · 23/01/2013 18:38

Jacksmania · 23/01/2013 19:02

It looks like shipping wouldn't be too much - but will look into it.

Could someone link to the 24-pack for me? I'm a bit useless today. I'm full of cold. Full. [ugh]

GlaikitFizzog · 23/01/2013 19:06
