Very sad news I'm afraid. Lemontruffles' husband died this week on New Year's Day after living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Such devastating news. Our hearts go out to her. In her own words, he was the love of her life.
Sad

We have offered to make a blanket for her, and are so pleased that she has said she would love one. She is clearly so very moved by our offer and has said she is astonished at the kindness of strangers. We will all be holding her hand and hope that she will feel the love and support from us all, and that the blanket will bring whatever comfort it can.

Lemontruffles writes so movingly on her thread about her beloved husband, and has shared many memories, bless her heart. her thread is HERE. You will not fail to be moved by the love and warmth of her posts about him.

So to the Woolly Hug, we would be very grateful for your help.

We will need crocheters, knitters and donors (of funds or wool) I will co ordinate and do admin, and Knotty (KnottyLocks) is here and will help you with any queries you may have.

So if you are able to join with us, please PM me, and also if you are offering to donate, or need a donor, I can help match you up.

Thank you so much.
Thanks

The wool we are using:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (not the Baby cashmerino)
  • Rowan Cashsoft DK
  • Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK.
  • Artesano Superwash Merino DK.

Just from these yarns please as they are very similar and we know they can be combined for wash and wear.

4mm crochet hook or knitting needles
6 inch squares

The Colours
Lemontruffles has spoken so movingly about her husband's love for the countryside of North Wales, and to reflect that passion how she sees the blanket as a landscape, so :

Greens, darker purples, blues, silvers, cream.

If going for cream please use Debbie Bliss cashmerino DK 013
(Not bright colours for this please, and no pinks or lilacs, thank you)

Just sharing some of her words about him
He was Welsh and loved the countryside of North Wales especially. He loved walking. He loved going to the pub and having the biggest laugh he could. He had a fantastic sense of humour and he loved having fun. He was warm hearted, he had a spirit of pure generosity - though with a 'sticking point' stubborn streak! - he was no angel. He was very adventurous about life. He was a proper hippy in the 60s and 70s. He had an amazing memory for all sorts of things, and a very wide ranging and strange knowledge of very odd things. Such an interesting man. A man with endless and deep humanity towards all the people he met. He was very well loved. He had a deep maturity and wisdom about other people.

Oh, and music! Not male voice choirs! Rock and blues from the 60s and 70s, and the manic street preachers. He had great taste. Also photographs. He was always photographing things, all sorts of random things, all sorts of bits of nature, and landscapes. He loved his camera.

Suggestions for motifs

  • Any motifs of the natural world - trees, leaves, flowers, birds (esp crows )
  • Can anyone find a Welsh dragon design or a harp? We'd love to find these for her.
  • Anything to reflect he was a Welshman.
  • Music, photography related
  • We have an initial, could you PM me if this is something you'd like to do.

There are many relevant patterns for knitters and crocheters linked to from our website under Crafting

Reading her words gives us lots of motifs to think about for sure, but please don't feel daunted by these suggestions, we love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen on our website. We also have a Facebook page MNWoollyHugs and are on Twitter @MNWoollyHugs. If you 'like' or 'follow' us you'll be updated on progress via your feed.

As always, we thank you so much for your support.
Thinking of lemontruffles Xx

Pistey and Knotty
Thanks

Happy birthday Skoggy. Sorry it's been pants, I hope things start looking up for you.

Just to let you know I have posted my squares.
I've really got into crocheting now and have got the bug.
I've joined Ravelry and spent way too long deciding what my next project is. I have also borrowed some magazines from my uncle and have found a little mouse I want to do for my DD's first proper teddy.

How I'm supposed to be a mum and house-duties-person on top of all this, I don't know!

Love to Lemontruffles, I hope she's well. x

KnottyLocks · 29/01/2013 21:09

Aww Skoggy. Hope tomorrow is brighter for you. My 30th was turgid. Only drink and dancing helped Smile

WhereAreMyShoes, what is this house duties malarky?

BIWI · 29/01/2013 21:14

Sorry you didn't have a good birthday, Skoggy.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 29/01/2013 22:52

I hope tomorrow is a better day for you Skoggy.

MNPin2013 · 29/01/2013 23:55

Late birthday wishes Skoggy, try's and fails to remember 30th.

Joined ravelry tonight, will get uploading project details this week.

Trazzles, squares made with love are all gorgeous . Yours may also be full of character Smile

Trazzletoes · 30/01/2013 07:30

Ah crap. Now I have 2 weeks to learn before the next hospital trip...

RatherBeOnThePiste · 30/01/2013 07:42

You need any more woolly wool Trazzle?

Trazzletoes · 30/01/2013 07:43

Thanks Pistey, but I should be ok... Tis my 7th wedding anniversary next week I've been dropping hints...

BIWI · 30/01/2013 08:11

Gah Pistey - you had me watching that for a minute there! Thankfully the speakers are muted on my laptop so I won't have caught anything.

droitwichmummy · 30/01/2013 08:14

Six there is another way to cast on if you are having trouble. Do you cast on with one needle or 2?

WeAreSix · 30/01/2013 10:52

2 needles. And usually unsuccessfully!

I can finger knit a lovely chain though... :)

RedRosie · 30/01/2013 20:06

Ten rows to go ... Ian The Interim Green Sheep (who may need a bath as Pru has nibbled him a bit) is nearly finished ...

Happy belated birthday Skoggy. 30 was Pah, 40 much better. 40 and a bit better still ...

BarbaraWoodlouse · 30/01/2013 21:18

Will post tomorrow. 2 crochet squares, 3rd didn't happen. Was v disappointed that one of my favourite knitting pattern has been withdrawn withdrawn from the web.

That'll teach me to try to be tidy and not print it off. Confused

ThePigOfHappiness · 30/01/2013 21:32

Barbara I have that pattern saved on ravelry as a cowl. Are you on there? Or I can try to link here

ThePigOfHappiness · 30/01/2013 21:35

testing

BarbaraWoodlouse · 30/01/2013 23:16

Ooh thanks Pig

Link doesn't work on my iPad but I am on Ravelry so will try to find you on there. Are you in the MN group?

Flojobunny · 30/01/2013 23:50

Hi sorry I've nearly finished. I will crack on tomorrow and get it in the last post. Can you confirm its the usually address. Sorry can't seem to PM on phone.

ChippingInLovesMN · 31/01/2013 00:42

Skoggy - sorry I missed your birthday Thanks. 30 was shite for me too!! and I am very very sorry to hear your aren't getting to move into the other place, keep trying, something will work out! x

Rosie - I am so sorry I didn't get back to you with the music note pattern. It worked out OK with 35 stitches over 47 rows. Unfortunately RL threw a couple of curve balls this week and my good intentions to get the pattern to you fell by the wayside :( It looks like The Intrim Green Sheep has kept you quite busy though and hopefully my stitch and row count will help you on another square sometime x

Pistey - Squares ready to go, I just need to sew in the ends and they'll be in the post tomorrow :) I've PM'd you as well.

I wish there was a little icon by peoples names when they have uploaded a photo of their squares, I love to see them all but it takes aggggggggggggges to click on all the profiles! Soupy did you take a photo of yours before you sent it??

BIWI - I'm on Ravelry too - LittleMissClicky

ChippingInLovesMN · 31/01/2013 01:12

WeAreSix - I cast on by making a loop on the LHN, then knitting into it & putting it onto the left needle as well. The you put the RHN between the two stitches and knit another stitch, twist it and put it on the LHN. There are loads of ways to cast on, but I like that one as I think it gives a nice edge :) and if that sounds confusing you can watch this YouTube tutorial - this woman is brilliant :)

RatherBeOnThePiste · 31/01/2013 06:31

Morning all. Smile

Just away to PMs.

Thanks Flo, yes please, I'll PM you.

Thanks

Thanks chipping I'll take a look later once DDs are at school. I bought some circular needles yesterday - someone recommended them for not dropping the knitting. Are they easy for beginners?

Hope I haven't hijacked the thread too much!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 31/01/2013 06:50

Not at all Six we are really glad you are on board and we always love to help.

BIWI I know you hear the call of the crochet hook, tis but time, and what celebrations there will be that day. Dancing in the streets and fireworks at the very least. Smile

Catch up with everyone later ThanksThanksThanksThanksThanks
