We have been very moved by a request from the Octavia Appeal at the Brompton Hospital. The Brompton Hospital is a specialist heart and lung centre in London complete with the second largest paediatric intensive care unit in the country. This unit takes the sickest babies and children from all over, some transferred immediately after birth, others have become too sick to be cared for at other major hospitals and most are already on life support when they arrive. These babies and children are incredibly sick, and very sadly not all survive. The Octavia Appeal have approached us and asked if we are able to make blankets for these babies who have very sadly passed away.

We are looking for crafters and donors to help make this possible. At an intensely bleak and dark time there is still something very positive that we can do for the baby and their family. Our blankets are always handmade with love and compassion and so are perfect. We can help care for the whole family at this time by making the baby comfortable and snuggled up whilst sending love and a hug to the parents.

We know that we have many crafters and donors who have first hand experience of such devastating loss. We understand that this is a very difficult request, but if you can join with us, and are able to help, then we would love to have you on board. From speaking to some of you, we know how incredibly important blankets like these are to those who receive them.

Thanks Thanks Thanks

Like Little Hugs, Angel Hugs will be an ongoing project and the two will run alongside each other.

To our lovely crafters Thanks

  • Angel Hugs are to be all white and can be knitted or crocheted in any wool suitable for a baby blanket, so 4ply, DK, just as long as it feels soft and cosy. The design is up to you, but it should be kept simple. Angel Hugs can also be sewn using pure cotton and good quality fleece, again white please and in a simple design.

  • Minimum size : 24 inches square, going up to a maximum of approx. 30 inches square.

  • If making a whole Angel Hug feels too much, but you would still like to support this, we would be pleased to accept simple knitted and crocheted 6 inch squares, which we will hook together. If choosing this option, please use Stylecraft Special DK in white.

  • If you would like to take part in this project but feel you can't due to the costs involved, please PM me and we'll try to help you with materials.

    To our lovely Donors Thanks

We would be very grateful for support from anyone who would like to donate funds to help with this. You can either donate via Paypal admin@ woollyhugs.com but please add a message so we know who to thank and which project it is for. If you don't have Paypal, please PM me as we have other ways that you can donate. We are so grateful to all our donors, without you, these projects could not function. Thanks

Knotty is here to help with any questions, and please PM me if you'd like to and are able to join us with this.

It is a very sad request we are making, and yet there is something very positive here too, and we know the Blanketeers have big hearts.

Sometimes thank you doesn't seem enough, but thank you once again Xx

    Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks

I've been truly crap and haven't even started mine yet. Was attempting a little hug of my own and will be finishing the last square tonight and will then crack on with my angel hug.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 29/12/2012 22:35

I won't have that MOS

You are most definitely NOT crap, absolutely not!

Bless you for the Little Hug, it will be gorgeous, and plenty of time for the Angel Hug.

Definitely not crap.

oh bless you pistey, you are too kind Grin
started my first square for angel hug last night, felt a bit 'odd' knitting with different wool but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

It is bliss using the bamboo after Stylecraft. Nothing wrong with Stylecraft but this feels gorgeous

My Angel Hug isn't all white though. It has alternate pale green stripes which are almost white. It looks lovely though [nervous]

I'm planning to knit one and have just ordered the wool.
It pulls back a few memories, 10 years this months since I lost DS1 at 17 weeks.
A blanket would have been a real comfort back then.

bebejones I've had to promise to make one for DD and DS. I don't mind the knitting, its the putting them together I'm going to struggle with

Report
bebejones · 03/01/2013 10:21

MOS I've never had to join bits together before so I think I'll struggle too!

In awe of all those who have experienced loss and are contributing blankets

(Also amazed at all the fabulously crafty lovelies that have already finished... And those who have finished more than one!!)

Mine has been ready since just before Christmas. Have just taken it out to post and see dd someone has gotten a tiny bit of chocolate on it, so have to wash it. Hopefully it washes out or dd will have a new blanket for her baby's bed and I'll have to get hooking again!

Just having a go at this for an Angel Hug, www.tricotting.com/uploads/1/0/7/2/10726705/butter_blanket.pdf
please can someone tell me I am not going mad.
I says
"Cast-on 133 st, work 8 rows in garter stitch" which I have done,
then it continues
"r1 = k7 k3 , yo, s-k2tog-p, yo repeat - for 16 times, k3, ending with k7"
which just doesn't work, I have worked out the pattern as 6 sts (ie k3 , yo, s-k2tog-p, yo) with a border each end of 10 each end (ie K7, K3)
so basically mutiples of 6 plus 20 iyswim ?

this does not compute to 133

HELP !!!!!!!!!!!

I agree it does not work out. it would with 113 stitches so I wonder if there is a typo?

Report
HaveToWearHeels · 04/01/2013 09:33

thanks droitwich that first row took me over an hour, keep going over it, thought I was going insane.
In the end I did a rough calculation on paper and ended up taking it back and doing one more border stitch at each end and so far it seems pretty even.
I suppose I can't complain with it being free and all Grin

Report
RatherBeOnThePiste · 04/01/2013 10:36

I have no idea about the pattern and can't even pretend Smile

Chocolate will wash, no worries.

Thank you everyone. No particular deadline for the Angel Hugs. We are going to be contacting the Brompton and seeing if they are ready for another batch Sad towards the end of the month.

Heartfelt thanks to all, you are stars Thanks
