This is Phase 1 of what we hope, in time, will be an ongoing project.

Our basic aim is to provide little blankets and quilts that give comfort to babies and small children who are seriously ill in hospital.

The Inspiration:
When we offered a blanket to Greengoose after her beautiful daughter Merryn passed away, she told us how Merryn had been given a small handmade blanket whilst she was in hospital. As Greengoose said,
"Merryn's little square meant and still means so much to us, and so many families end up in hospital early or unexpectedly and have nothing of their own ready or with them, and even if they do, just to know you are thought about means so much. "

We offered to make a little blanket or two, alongside our Woolly Hug, to send to the hospital to 'replace' the one that had been given to Merryn, so that another small child could be comforted as Merryn had.

And so began a bigger idea...

With Merryn's blanket in mind, and knowing how Expat's darling daughter Aillidh had so much comfort from a blanket handmade by a wonderful group of friends, we wondered if we could do something more to help.

The Project. Phase 1

We contacted a few hospitals and very early on developed a lovely relationship with Yorkhill Hospital for children, where Aillidh was treated.
This stage of the project is to provide Yorkhill with small blankets and quilts that they can give to the babies and children that are receiving treatment under their care.
The start of this project coincides with Yorkhill's fundraising week. Their website is here
We hope to develop links with other hospitals in the near future and to include them in future phases.

How you can get involved:

You can help by either making a complete Little Hug
Or
By making 6" squares using Stylecraft Special DK yarn or Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK, Rowan Cashsoft DK and Sublime Extra Fine Merino wool DK

For all of the Little Hugs:

Minimum size: 18 inches by 18 inches
For example, that's 3x3 6 inch squares with a small edge.
If you would like to make a blanket or quilt that is bigger, that would be lovely too.

Colours: Your choice!
We'd like to be able to provide a range of Little Hugs suitable for boys and girls.
If you would like to make something specifically for a boy or girl, that would also be lovely.

Things to avoid:
Buttons
Sequins and beads
Any embellishments that could scratch delicate skin or could be swallowed.
If using applique, it needs to be firmly stitched on with no hard edges.

Materials and ideas:
Woolly Blankets:
Suggested yarn: Stylecraft Special DK, a soft, non-scratchy acrylic that is a very reasonable £1.60 - £2 for 100g ball.
Pure cotton DK
If you would like to make a whole blanket, you could use a different weight yarn and a yarn other than those above. The essential thing is that it needs to be soft against sensitive and delicate skin and that it can be machine washed.
Ideas:
Blankets could be made from squares stitched or hooked together
Granny stripes or ripples
They could be made in one piece or in blocks, as well as squares

Quilts and stitched blankets:
Pure cotton and good quality fleece. The cotton can be from recycled sources.
We suggest that you wash both separately before sewing to allow for any difference in shrinkage.
Ideas:
Traditional style quilts, from simple square designs to more complex patterns
Cotton edged fleeces, with or without appliqué
Quilt and fleece combination: quilted front with a fleece back

Donors:
If you would like to contribute towards materials, you can either donate via Paypal here on our Woolly Hugs website with a message letting us know which project you are donating to. If you do not have Paypal, please PM RatherBeOnThePiste as we have other ways that you can donate.

If you would like to take part in this project but feel you can't due to the costs involved, please PM Pistey and we'll try to help with materials.

As ever, thanks for your support Thanks

Hi

What a lovely idea.

  1. Just to make sure I've understood this correctly, the 18 x 18 inch quilts are stand alone quilts including backing, wadding and binding?

  2. I've got some flannelette sheets I use for the backing for baby quilts. Is this ok as an alternative to fleece? I'd use wadding as usual. (Just wondering to what extent the requirements outlined are issued by the hospital and to what they're what you've decided Smile

And one more:

  1. Am I right in thinking that the quilt is allocated to the baby and remains with the family?
KnottyLocks · 14/09/2012 14:10

Some answers!

  1. 18 x 18 inches is the smallest size. The quilts and blankets can be bigger, if you like. So yes, 18x18 is the finished size.
  1. Flannelette sheets will be absolutely fine as a backing: lovely and soft.
We haven't been given a series of strict guidelines as such but we know that some treatments can leave a child's skin very sensitive, so the materials used must be soft. They have to be machine washable to limit the possibility of infection.
  1. The Little Hug will belong to the child and their family.

Hope that explains it. Happy to answer any more. Smile

Brilliant. Count me in then!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 14/09/2012 14:18

I was just about to recycle some flannelette sheets, one cot bed size of mine from when I was a baby and one flat double bed size. I don't sew but if anyone could use them for this project, do PM me I would be happy to post them to you. I will hang on to them for a week or two.

OrangeandGoldMrsDeVere · 14/09/2012 14:18

Thank you knotty
May I just add something?

The blankets are probably going to need to withstand some pretty heavy duty wear and washing.

Poorly kids are often sick and the meds can get everywhere too (think what its like trying to squirt calpol down a child and x 100)

Some mums me are also likely to be quite didgy about germs/infection etc and will want to put them on a hot wash often.

I was very glad that Billie's quilt could withstand so much washing. It meant we could always have it when we needed it and i didnt have to worry about protecting it IYSWIM.

It has a little tear in it now but it is 8 years old (how impossible that seems) and has been used every single day.

KnottyLocks · 14/09/2012 14:23

MrsDV, please feel free to say whatever you think would help.

It's really, really useful to have your perspective and thoughts.

We obviously want these Little Hugs to last.

What another lovely idea.
Pistey I'd be more than happy to be a donor again, I'm afraid I don't have a paypal account so can order and send to a crafter direct from a website.

I have an idea, although appreciate that this may not be feasible..... Is it possible to pair up donors and crafters who are geographically close? Perhaps it would be nice to meet the crafter and possibly make a new friend or use it as an opportunity to arrange a local meet-up?

I know you have a lot on already, so I would be happy to coordinate this is, if it is a goer.
Smile

tribpot · 14/09/2012 14:27

Marking my place - I don't think I'll have time to do a mini-hug for a little while, but will put this on the list.

SoupDragon · 14/09/2012 14:30

I've often thought "It's a blanket. How much help can it be?"

Glad to know that actually they are a help. :)

TheWonderfulFanny · 14/09/2012 14:42

Bookmarking. Have cotton Dk and hooks...

craftynclothy · 14/09/2012 14:43

I'd like to contribute again. I can crochet blankets and sew quilts so happy to do either. If it's not too cheeky I'd really appreciate either some Stylecraft yarn or some backing (fleece/flanelette) for the quilt donated.

Is it pistey we pm for these projects too?

NCForNow · 14/09/2012 15:52

I'm not experienced but am learning to quilt...I am just checking in as I would love to make a quilt for a little child. x I will keep at it and when I feel I'm "there" in terms of quality, I will send one.

bunnywhack · 14/09/2012 16:03

I crochet would love to do a blanket quick question should we avoid granny square styles im just thinking about their little fingers wasn't there something a while back about them getting trapped in those sorts of blankets

mousebacon · 14/09/2012 16:05

You are all so lovely Smile

KnottyLocks · 14/09/2012 16:24

Crafty, I'm coming to get you in a minute Grin

Bunny, I think it really does depend on your tension. I do understand what you mean though. Big loopy holes are best avoided. However, I've seen some grannies that are incredibly dense too. Taking out the chains between clusters will do this.

NC, look foward to that. Smile

Mouse, thank you Smile

Can I just repeat that we are asking for 6 inch squares too. Don't want any of you feeling overwhelmed by the idea that you have to make a complete Little Hug...although that would be lovely if you are able, obviously Smile

RatherBeOnThePiste · 14/09/2012 16:54

Hello Brew

MinnieBar · 14/09/2012 17:07

Second attempt at crocheting is going better than the first.

However, bearing in mind my first attempt was a disaster, that's not saying much. Something has 'clicked' a bit though - although I'm struggling to 'see' the stitches. I think having the proper yarn hold rather than 'that'll do' has helped a lot...

IShallWearMidnight · 14/09/2012 17:07

sign me up - should manage a complete Little Hug with the wool I currently have. Am thinking about crochet this time, which will be fun, as I haven't crocheted for a good few years.

ArfurBrain · 14/09/2012 17:58

I have some beautiful wool left over from Aillidh's blanket, so can definitely do some squares. Fab idea x

RatherBeOnThePiste · 14/09/2012 18:04

Yani - am just coming to you - Pm coming up.

Honestly, everyone is marvellous X

trixie123 · 14/09/2012 18:04
