This is Phase 1 of what we hope, in time, will be an ongoing project.

Our basic aim is to provide little blankets and quilts that give comfort to babies and small children who are seriously ill in hospital.

The Inspiration:
When we offered a blanket to Greengoose after her beautiful daughter Merryn passed away, she told us how Merryn had been given a small handmade blanket whilst she was in hospital. As Greengoose said,
"Merryn's little square meant and still means so much to us, and so many families end up in hospital early or unexpectedly and have nothing of their own ready or with them, and even if they do, just to know you are thought about means so much. "

We offered to make a little blanket or two, alongside our Woolly Hug, to send to the hospital to 'replace' the one that had been given to Merryn, so that another small child could be comforted as Merryn had.

And so began a bigger idea...

With Merryn's blanket in mind, and knowing how Expat's darling daughter Aillidh had so much comfort from a blanket handmade by a wonderful group of friends, we wondered if we could do something more to help.

The Project. Phase 1

We contacted a few hospitals and very early on developed a lovely relationship with Yorkhill Hospital for children, where Aillidh was treated.
This stage of the project is to provide Yorkhill with small blankets and quilts that they can give to the babies and children that are receiving treatment under their care.
The start of this project coincides with Yorkhill's fundraising week. Their website is here
We hope to develop links with other hospitals in the near future and to include them in future phases.

How you can get involved:

You can help by either making a complete Little Hug
Or
By making 6" squares using Stylecraft Special DK yarn or Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK, Rowan Cashsoft DK and Sublime Extra Fine Merino wool DK

For all of the Little Hugs:

Minimum size: 18 inches by 18 inches
For example, that's 3x3 6 inch squares with a small edge.
If you would like to make a blanket or quilt that is bigger, that would be lovely too.

Colours: Your choice!
We'd like to be able to provide a range of Little Hugs suitable for boys and girls.
If you would like to make something specifically for a boy or girl, that would also be lovely.

Things to avoid:
Buttons
Sequins and beads
Any embellishments that could scratch delicate skin or could be swallowed.
If using applique, it needs to be firmly stitched on with no hard edges.

Materials and ideas:
Woolly Blankets:
Suggested yarn: Stylecraft Special DK, a soft, non-scratchy acrylic that is a very reasonable £1.60 - £2 for 100g ball.
Pure cotton DK
If you would like to make a whole blanket, you could use a different weight yarn and a yarn other than those above. The essential thing is that it needs to be soft against sensitive and delicate skin and that it can be machine washed.
Ideas:
Blankets could be made from squares stitched or hooked together
Granny stripes or ripples
They could be made in one piece or in blocks, as well as squares

Quilts and stitched blankets:
Pure cotton and good quality fleece. The cotton can be from recycled sources.
We suggest that you wash both separately before sewing to allow for any difference in shrinkage.
Ideas:
Traditional style quilts, from simple square designs to more complex patterns
Cotton edged fleeces, with or without appliqué
Quilt and fleece combination: quilted front with a fleece back

Donors:
If you would like to contribute towards materials, you can either donate via Paypal here on our Woolly Hugs website with a message letting us know which project you are donating to. If you do not have Paypal, please PM RatherBeOnThePiste as we have other ways that you can donate.

If you would like to take part in this project but feel you can't due to the costs involved, please PM Pistey and we'll try to help with materials.

As ever, thanks for your support Thanks

I give up trying to work it out.

GlaikitFizzog · 30/09/2012 14:33

Oops that was meant for the dr who thread!!

OpheliaBumps · 30/09/2012 21:41

Wow my granny stripe is working up so quickly, I always forget how much quicker crochet is than knitting!

It's also going to be pretty big, so much better for an older child. I was hoping up to 5ish, but now I'm thinking maybe even up to a 10 year old Grin

RatherBeOnThePiste · 30/09/2012 21:45

Ophelia - that will be marvellous, thank you Smile Thanks

Looking lovely Midnight Thanks

Loving Fizzy on Dr Who Grin

GlaikitFizzog · 30/09/2012 22:03

I'm still Confused at dr who.

Pistey did you get my pm about the cotton? Im 2/3 through blanket 2! A bulk buy from masons depends on me finishing it!!

Somersaults · 30/09/2012 22:52

Be just finished the flower centres for my little hug. Tomorrow will be beginning to turn the into squares. I'm feeling positive so far, hopefully it'll turn out girly and pretty :)

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/10/2012 06:31

Morning - yes FizzyOne, just seen, I will have to have a think, I got most of it about a year ago, leave it with me X

Somersaults - it will be gorgeous Thanks

Wolfcub · 01/10/2012 06:47

Midnight that's looking lovely, I do think the peaks are more peaky

SoupDragon · 01/10/2012 07:15

I think your peaks look more perky pointy than the Attic24 version.

[childish snigger]

SoupDragon · 01/10/2012 07:15

... but it is lovely :)

IShallWearMidnight · 01/10/2012 07:19

wish my peaks were perky, but after 3 DC and being on the wrong side of forty, I'm reduced to crocheting perky peaks Wink.

SoupDragon · 01/10/2012 07:24

So, your perks are peaky instead?

HairyPotter · 01/10/2012 08:55

Morning Brew My squares are finished at last here

Is it still ok to post them to someone more talented to hook together? Where are they going to? I think next time I will attempt a one piece number [brave] all the ones everyone has posted look so much nicer. I would love that ripple one. It's gorgeous.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/10/2012 08:58

Sadly I don't have perks or peaks Sad

Hairy - I shall PM you Thanks

craftynclothy · 01/10/2012 09:41

Morning!

Right, little update from me. I have done a not so giant granny square (18" square) and a basic stripey blanket (21" square) and have almost finished another 18" granny square (had to add a colour from my stash too and just need to seek out another ball of yarn from upstairs to do the last two rounds). I've also done a single granny square with the leftovers. Lots of thanks to lovely dh who sewed half some of the ends in for me

Hoping to post out later this week.

GlaikitFizzog · 01/10/2012 09:44

Thanks pistey. There is some cream on eBay I think I'll just get that as its the only cream in the cotton. And the way I've done it so far it won't be next to the original cream if there is any colour difference.

nickeldaisical · 01/10/2012 11:59

Minnie - you can still send it! just keep going until the smallest side is 18", and the iron it flat - blankets aren't supposed to be perfect and neat and flat because they're meant for cuddling! Grin

nickeldaisical · 01/10/2012 12:00

(this obviously only works if you're doing a full blanket, but if it's a 6" square, then it really only needs to be nearly correct, but don't iron a 6" square!)

nickeldaisical · 01/10/2012 12:02

I've very almost finished my tiger's head.
then got to work out how to attach it to the rest of the blanket (ie make a circle square)
and will trim it with orange and black stripes.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/10/2012 14:04

Gorgeoise ripple blanket from the lovely Umami has arrived safely, please do check out our facebook page, MNWoollyHugs for anyone who may not have found us yet!

Thanks Umami, you are a star.

Wolfcub · 01/10/2012 14:11

Oooo I can't wait to get home so I can see the blanket on FB (it's banned at work). I managed to get another chunk of mine done last night and am hoping I might be able to motor on with it this week. Shame there are no seats at rugby practice otherwise I could get some done there.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/10/2012 14:12

You have a treat waiting wolf!

Skoggy · 01/10/2012 14:20

Hi there!
I've just found about this from the pic on FB. I'm an avid crocheter and would love to get involved in these Little Hugs and Woolly Hugs. The blanket posted on FB is gorgeous!

Is there any further info / contacts for this other that the OP on here and the Woolly Hugs website?

Many thanks.

(If anyone is on Ravelry, you can find me there under username Skoggy Smile)

prettybird · 01/10/2012 14:28

Wolf - that's what I like about our rugby club: the fact that there are nice big picture windows overlooking the rugby pitches so I can stay in the warmth we can watch from inside while the kids freeze outside Grin

Only problem is at the moment I am responsible for doing Registration & take in subs so can't use the time to knit :( - but hopefully we'll soon have that process finished and I can use the time more profitably Wink

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/10/2012 14:32

Lovely to have you with us Skoggy Thanks

The Woolly Hugs website is a really good place to start to find out about us. As well as the info on the Home page, have a look at Information too and hopefully that will help put the photographs of the full size Woolly Hugs into context.

The Little Hug project is new to us all, so the info in the OP here is really it at the mo, we are only in the first stage of the project and are sure things will evolve iyswim? But we are delighted with the relationship we have with Yorkhill and the way it is all going. People have been, and are truly amazing, so generous hearted. Tis awesome stuff.

We have Facebook and Twitter, both MNWoollyHugs, which are great ways of keeping in touch, although all projects are run through MN. It is fab for us because Mumsnet Towers follow us on both and do share and retweet and that really helps spread the word Smile

Please do PM me if I can help you with anything.
