This is Phase 1 of what we hope, in time, will be an ongoing project.

Our basic aim is to provide little blankets and quilts that give comfort to babies and small children who are seriously ill in hospital.

The Inspiration:
When we offered a blanket to Greengoose after her beautiful daughter Merryn passed away, she told us how Merryn had been given a small handmade blanket whilst she was in hospital. As Greengoose said,
"Merryn's little square meant and still means so much to us, and so many families end up in hospital early or unexpectedly and have nothing of their own ready or with them, and even if they do, just to know you are thought about means so much. "

We offered to make a little blanket or two, alongside our Woolly Hug, to send to the hospital to 'replace' the one that had been given to Merryn, so that another small child could be comforted as Merryn had.

And so began a bigger idea...

With Merryn's blanket in mind, and knowing how Expat's darling daughter Aillidh had so much comfort from a blanket handmade by a wonderful group of friends, we wondered if we could do something more to help.

The Project. Phase 1

We contacted a few hospitals and very early on developed a lovely relationship with Yorkhill Hospital for children, where Aillidh was treated.
This stage of the project is to provide Yorkhill with small blankets and quilts that they can give to the babies and children that are receiving treatment under their care.
The start of this project coincides with Yorkhill's fundraising week. Their website is here
We hope to develop links with other hospitals in the near future and to include them in future phases.

How you can get involved:

You can help by either making a complete Little Hug
Or
By making 6" squares using Stylecraft Special DK yarn or Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK, Rowan Cashsoft DK and Sublime Extra Fine Merino wool DK

For all of the Little Hugs:

Minimum size: 18 inches by 18 inches
For example, that's 3x3 6 inch squares with a small edge.
If you would like to make a blanket or quilt that is bigger, that would be lovely too.

Colours: Your choice!
We'd like to be able to provide a range of Little Hugs suitable for boys and girls.
If you would like to make something specifically for a boy or girl, that would also be lovely.

Things to avoid:
Buttons
Sequins and beads
Any embellishments that could scratch delicate skin or could be swallowed.
If using applique, it needs to be firmly stitched on with no hard edges.

Materials and ideas:
Woolly Blankets:
Suggested yarn: Stylecraft Special DK, a soft, non-scratchy acrylic that is a very reasonable £1.60 - £2 for 100g ball.
Pure cotton DK
If you would like to make a whole blanket, you could use a different weight yarn and a yarn other than those above. The essential thing is that it needs to be soft against sensitive and delicate skin and that it can be machine washed.
Ideas:
Blankets could be made from squares stitched or hooked together
Granny stripes or ripples
They could be made in one piece or in blocks, as well as squares

Quilts and stitched blankets:
Pure cotton and good quality fleece. The cotton can be from recycled sources.
We suggest that you wash both separately before sewing to allow for any difference in shrinkage.
Ideas:
Traditional style quilts, from simple square designs to more complex patterns
Cotton edged fleeces, with or without appliqué
Quilt and fleece combination: quilted front with a fleece back

Donors:
If you would like to contribute towards materials, you can either donate via Paypal here on our Woolly Hugs website with a message letting us know which project you are donating to. If you do not have Paypal, please PM RatherBeOnThePiste as we have other ways that you can donate.

If you would like to take part in this project but feel you can't due to the costs involved, please PM Pistey and we'll try to help with materials.

As ever, thanks for your support Thanks

My Rowan cashsoft dk has just arrived! I ordered 2 x cream, 1 x pinkish and 1 x blueish Grin

I'm 6" into the main bit of my blanket, it's a King Cole yarn iirc but i have no idea what weight it is - goes from 2ply to chunky and back every foot Hmm lovely pinky purple blend, though, so hopefully worth the effort! I shall pop a 2" border round in something a bit less wibbly... Or possibly my favourite Sirdar Snowflake, which is also a PITA but works up beautifully. I'm pretty sure I've got most of a ball of fuschia in my stash

RatherBeOnThePiste · 24/09/2012 21:42

I am smiling here at terrifying wool, crocheting high vis jackets and Jules summoning galloping sheep Grin

Welcome into this Norma!! Wine

I think the beginnings of my mountain of wool should arrive tomorrow. I'm dreading what DH will say when he sees it all! Two big parcels. I might tell him I won it. Or that it came from a very kind donor (he doesn't have to know that the donor was me!).

SoupDragon · 25/09/2012 08:23

Hairy, would you like some Jaffa and Bright Green to use with the Fiesta?

Actually, DS2's favourite colour is luminous green so I shall be crocheting him a scarf with the green.

BarbaraWoodlouse · 25/09/2012 10:32

at telling DH you won it. I'd never lie to me DH like that Shock I just smuggle it in when he's not looking and hide it in my wardrobe Grin

prettybird · 25/09/2012 11:01

" This wool? I've had it ages !" Grin

KnottyLocks · 25/09/2012 14:51

Babs, there is no space left in the wardrobe: too full of 'oh, this old thing' bargains.

My DH travels a lot, so I just line up a delivery for when he is away. Gives me time Grin

KnottyLocks · 25/09/2012 15:46

Time is ok if you have space Grin

With that in mind, a wardrobe like the Tardis would be brilliant.

But I probably wouldn't be able to find a thing in it.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 25/09/2012 15:51

Or Narnia. Plenty of scope to hide wool in Narnia....

HairyPotter · 25/09/2012 16:14

A kind offer Soupy however I think I'll pass, I doubt they make sunglasses dark enough to cope with that and fiesta! Grin

Ive just ordered a few quite a few balls of more muted colours for damage limitation purposes.

IShallWearMidnight · 25/09/2012 17:38

my multi-ball delivery from Masons arrived today (only ordered it yesterday) - will have to tell DH it was from an anonymous donor Wink. I'm doing a couple of squares in the Artesano, so maybe they can be combined with someone else's Debbie Bliss squares? I don't have enough of that to make an entire Little Hug.

Am all excited with possible colour combinations now, AND am not going into work tomorrow morning, so I have a couple of hours to play Grin.

PurpleFrog · 25/09/2012 18:54

I would like to join in as well!

I also had a delivery from Masons today. Smile When I got in from work DP was leaning on it on the sofa. He said he didn't think much of the cushion I had ordered - perhaps I could make it a softer cover! Grin

I'll open it while he is making dinner - and secrete most it away before he sees what the unsquished volume really is! Blush I have sent for a Lucy Pack and another 6 balls from which I intend to make a Little Hug and some blankets for some doll's bunk beds. I am considering doing a Ripple Hug, to see if I want to do that with the Lucy Pack.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 25/09/2012 19:10

PurpleFrog

We are very glad to have you with us Thanks

Feel like I need to go an order a pack from Masons now Smile Do I ?

IShallWearMidnight · 25/09/2012 19:32

17 balls of loveliness - you know you want to Wink

KnottyLocks · 25/09/2012 19:49

17 balls plus the rest you just bought plus all the blanket squares and Little Hugs.

Smashing Smile

Knotty - I meant my Masons order contains the Lucy Pack etc., not that I have ordered another 23 balls on top of today's delivery! Grin

KnottyLocks · 25/09/2012 19:56

You may not have but Pistey will Grin

Christmas wool pack? I want me one of those...

IShallWearMidnight · 25/09/2012 21:57

Rippley people - I've decided to do the attic24 blanket, but can anyone do me some written instructions for the chain less foundation? I can do an ordinary one, but the YouTube videos aren't very clear, and I work better from text in any case. TIA Smile

Somersaults · 25/09/2012 21:57

Grrr. Lovely wool arrived today. DH didn't even question it too much. Got myself all set up to go, pattern dug out from Ravelry and everything sorted. 4mm hook has
been sabotaged
been tidied away by DH
been carelessly moved by DH as part of his decorating frenzy
gone walkabout never to be seen again apparently. I can't get another until the weekend at the earliest :( I was so excited about finally getting back to some crochet too.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 25/09/2012 23:24

Ishall I'm 5 rows into the Attic24 blanket and used foundation chain according to this link
