We have a tiny increase in the number of woman MPs, by 2%, from 19.5 to 21.5%.
Labour women - down from 94-90
Con women - up from 18-48
Lib Dem women - down from 9-7
Green women - up from 0-1, yay!
(all figures approximate and copied out of the Times; they don't seem to add up to me!)

no women anywhere in any likely cabinets I think?

the first MP elected manages a women's refuge apparently.

anyone know anything else or have any thoughts?

i think it's a disgrace that the gender and race inequality in this new parliament hasn't been mentioned in the mainstream media.

parliamentary reform needs to include changing the working hours of mps to make it a more female friendly job

Times this morning 'An influx of new faces but so few are female' - on p.12 of the paper edition.
Haven't heard anyone say anything about it on tv yet!

Not a lot.

It's all the same as before isn't it.

Men in charge, men bickering and making deals to apportion the power out between them.

Mumsnet election! Pah!

if there is another election within a few months/a year how can we get women's issues onto the agenda a bit more then?

By marching on parliament naked

hungysavingexpertdotcom · 08/05/2010 10:51

Ah well, now we're in a CRISIS we can't be worrying about how many ladies are in parliament. We have MUCH more important things to do like mend broken Britain and get us out of this dreadful economic CRISIS we're in, and that's men's work.
Diversity? Equality? Out the window - don't you know there's a war on?

ImSoNotTelling · 08/05/2010 11:32

That's the long and short of it

sethstarkaddersmum · 08/05/2010 11:34

rofl ISNT. Yes, taking their clothes off being the only way women can get any attention in our culture these days.
It worked brilliantly for Lady Godiva but there's not quite the rarity value any more though....

Hungrysaving - you have a very good point. Women in government are useful for girly portfolios like families or international development but I'm not sure their brains are suited to understanding the economy. It's scientific - we used to think women were just like men but now we know better!
