Karren Brady: not a feminist, but still delivers a cracking one-liner

I was disappointed that she says she's not a feminist www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/apr/11/karren-brady-west-ham-apprentice but get this:

'one of her players said, "I can see your tits in that shirt," to which she replied, "Don't worry, when I sell you to Crewe, you won't be able to see them from there." (The player was, indeed, sold soon afterwards.)'

Her reason for saying she is not a feminist:

'I think the term feminist is scary for women, because it means that you're extreme in some way'

Not scary for me.

interesting - i agree she is flying the flag even if she won't take the nam.

i like her on The Apprentice too, she generally is the one to raise a good point not considered by others.

posieparker · 12/04/2010 18:03

Hijack....

DP when you use offensive terms they are offensive to most people not just the people they mock or victimise. I am white but the word 'nigger' still offends me......

If you're not bitching for a fight I suggest you give MN a break, you're bound to upset someone else before the night is through.

daftpunk · 12/04/2010 18:10

Hmm, you aren't exactly sweetness and light pp, infact you are one of the mouthiest people I come across on here, I find you extremely irritating, and that is me being polite.

rainbowinthesky · 12/04/2010 18:13

This thread has gone a bit mad..

posieparker · 12/04/2010 18:16

Not offensive though, not racist and not homophobic....I'll take irritating anyday, especially if I irritate you.

amidaiwish · 12/04/2010 18:23

can someone please give me a definition of what is a feminist and then i can decide if i am one or not.

daftpunk · 12/04/2010 18:27

You're also a lightweight pp, boringly predictable and not worth a second more of my time, go away so I can get back to talking about feminism

msrisotto · 12/04/2010 18:28

Info for Amidaiwish

posieparker · 12/04/2010 18:30

Worthwhile enough for you to tell me though.....you must miss being the playground bully, no friends and no one on your side.

JollyPirate · 12/04/2010 18:31

I am still giggling about the riposte which I think was very good.

I think she lives the life and doesn't need any label. Don't really know much about her apart from the fact that she has forged a career in a very male dominated world - not a feat to scoffed at.

msrisotto · 12/04/2010 18:33

At a very young age too, remarkable despite her being really quite annoying.

yup i don't like 'mental' either as it suggests my dh is like julie burchill

which is in no way the case

daftpunk · 12/04/2010 18:58

Oh god, this thread isn't about the word mental, it's about a female in a male dominated profession.

if Julie Burchill has a problem with me she can come and sort me out....

msrisotto · 12/04/2010 19:09

No it's not about the word mental, however people have pulled you up on using it as an insult as it is offensive and didn't want to let it slide.

FunnyLittleFrog · 12/04/2010 19:20

It's a shame The Apprentice had to go for someone young and conventionally attractive like Brady. Would she have got the gig had she not been so 'extremely feminine' as the article puts it?

Margaret Mountford was one of the few powerful, intelligent older women seen on TV in recent years.

No, I don't think she got it for her looks alone, not at all. She is an incredibly successful woman and an inspiration - she deserves it. But I wonder if she would have got it had she not been so attractive? We'll never know.

There have been quite a few older women replaced by younger and more conventionally attractive ones on shows like this in recent years.

Love Maxine Peake.

EggyAllenPoe · 12/04/2010 21:48

quite a lot of high earners are good-looking, it helps (as Xenia would surely tell us!)

Margaret went off to do something she loved (Papyrology, which my Mum would love to study)

True FLF, but if things were fairer, we wouldn't have to choose between young pretty women and older experienced women, there would be women of all kinds represented in all kinds of media. At the moment it's like "we can only have one woman - but how to choose???". Ridiculous.

MoominmammasHandbag · 13/04/2010 16:02

My friend's otherwise bright 18 year old DD was adamant that a feminist was the female equivalent of a chauvanist.
And if that's what an A level student with leftie parents believes, then the message is getting very lost somewhere.
