Feminist blogs - recommendations wanted

We've had a lovely reading list thread for proper books, but what about online hangouts? I used to have a massive list but change of computers and just the tattered remnants are left.

To start off, my current favourites are:

Shakesville for constantly updated comments and campaigns about feminism, but also homophobia, racism etc.

The F-Word Blog for a UK and mainly young perspective, plus info on UK rallies and campaigns.

I Blame The Patriarchy for a bloody funny, radical perspective.

Tiger Beatdown for very funny comment on gender depictions in music and films, for the most part.

Also recommended Cruella-Blog the other day, written by a UK-based comedian.

More please!

Molesworth/Elephantsandmiasmas - thanks for the encouragement!

I think it's not so much about policing as being aware of where in the feminist spectrum people situate themselves. This is part of the reason why feminism sometimes struggles to enter popular debate, because there are differences between feminists. Views on prostitution being a big one.

On another note... I'm wondering if anyone would fancy writing a guest post on my blog?? Would love to get some people involved.

comixminx · 22/03/2010 11:32

Frankfrankly and others, it doesn't have to be policing but it can sound like it, and I think that's also something to be aware of (from the reading or writing side of these posts).

There's a big divergence, as you say, between feminists on the twin subjects of porn and prostitution. I'm not sure if I could quite face being involved in a porn topic in this section (tortoise) because I think it would be quite likely to provoke some heated (possibly over-heated) discussion ...

FWIW I think you don't have to be in the pocket of the porn barons to be pro-porn; I think it is possible to have pro-women porn (especially but not exclusively that written by women). Equally I think it is possible to believe that sex workers are often making a hard choice out of a limited repertoire of options available to them, and that criminalizing prostitution will not help those women. And I certainly think that having posts or articles written by sex workers and those who work with them (eg the Scottish Prostitutes Education Project) are useful, important, and valid articles I want to read and wish more people would also read. Of course feminists can and will choose where to align themselves on this debate, but particularly where we're offering suggestions for wider reading which will educate us all these voices are very important.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 22/03/2010 11:35

Ooh gosh

Go on then - any particular topic?

OP posts:
frankfrankly · 22/03/2010 12:11

Elephantsandmiasmas - yey!

I've not had a guest poster before so I'm making it up as I go along here...

I think if you'd like to choose the topic that would be great. Any thoughts?

As for length... something up to 600 words or so?

Beachcomber · 22/03/2010 19:37

Frankfrankly your blog looks great. I will have a proper read of it when I have time and will visit regularly.

Beachcomber · 22/03/2010 19:44

Oh meant to say I don't think we need worry about policing here on MN, I think we are all able to respectfully say what our position is on issues. Things are bound to get heated sometimes but that is because we really care about these issues.

I, for one, prefer to know a site's stance on the sex industry although I am generally interested to read stuff written by people who have worked in it.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 23/03/2010 01:43

Frankfrankly - it's Ada Lovelace day on Weds. Will you post or will i?

OP posts:
comixminx · 23/03/2010 07:44

Well mentioned about Ada Lovelace Day, Elephants! I was going to do a new thread about it last night but fell asleep instead (ah, pregnancy...)

frankfrankly · 23/03/2010 08:19

Sounds brilliant Elephants. Can you e-mail me something to franklyfeminist at googlemail . com ? If you note any links you'd like put in that would be great and I'll add them and put it up.

juuule · 23/03/2010 08:53

HerStoria

frankfrankly · 24/03/2010 18:29

Elephants, are you still wanting to write something for Ada Lovelace day? Not a problem if you've not had time.

ohemgee · 24/03/2010 19:47

This looks like it might be quite good when its up and running www.ukfeminista.org.uk/

Molesworth · 24/03/2010 20:16

This audio of an event at the RSA on 11 March might be of interest (UK Feminista is mentioned): The Equality Gap

with Kat Banyard, feminist campaigner and author of The Equality Illusion; Dr Nina Power, Senior Lecturer in Philosophy, Roehampton University; Deb Leary OBE, Founder and CEO of Forensic Pathways and President of the British Association of Women Entrepreneurs, and Sunder Katwala, General Secretary of the Fabian Society.

Chair: Ceri Goddard, Chief Executive of the Fawcett Society

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 24/03/2010 23:21

Finally got the sodding internet back on frank. It should be with you now, but I do understand if you're asleep! Hope it's alright.

frankfrankly · 25/03/2010 08:29

Sorry was asleep (well until ds was sick everywhere at 2am, anyway...) ! Just going to sort it now. Looks great btw.

frankfrankly · 25/03/2010 10:31

Done. Thanks Elephants!

Molesworth · 25/03/2010 11:00

Excellent stuff!

comixminx · 25/03/2010 11:41

Oooh, good stuff! Congrats/thanks to both Elephants and Frank!

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 25/03/2010 14:54

Hooray, glad you liked it! I've never written something for the real internet (rather than cosy sofa-lined MN I mean) before.

OP posts:
frankfrankly · 25/03/2010 19:29

Elephants - lol at MN being "cosy" not a term that would immediately spring to mind! . Well, if you fancy writing another sometime, or anyone else for that matter, let me know.

Back on topic... another blog I'm enjoying is those aren't your onions

Molesworth · 27/03/2010 12:45

Your blog is great, FF. I've been exploring some of the journals you've linked to this morning, so thanks for those

Molesworth · 27/03/2010 15:28

I'm also enjoying Feminist Philosophers - some good ranting on there about the recent 'Women' documentaries

Molesworth · 27/03/2010 15:40

Not a blog, but some excellent videos from the BBC archives here

frankfrankly · 27/03/2010 19:50

Thanks Molesworth . Some of them are really interesting, the gender and development one is co-funded by Oxfam, have been reading a bit of that today. It's fascinating how gender issues can have a profound impact on aid work and development.

Thanks for those links too. Off to have a look.

Molesworth · 27/03/2010 21:14

Haven't looked at the gender and development one yet: got totally sidetracked by the Feminist Media Studies one
