I love american Ms. magazine - interesting articles, great book reviews, worldwide news reporting. But rather hard to get here, and I keep forgetting to subscribe (off to do that now actually)

But any suggestions for magazines that don't assume that women only want to know about shoes and makeup ? I don't mind a bit, but good reportage about issues that affect women is a must - no bunting cupcakes !

No idea but I wish there were one. I am not interested in who had celullite and what tunic to buy, I want to read funny and interesting stuff!

For a laugh though, imagine if someone started a magazine for men that mirrored those aimed at women, in anguished wonderment over russell brand's new fitness regime and colin firth's shoes, with tips on how to get the perfect quads. My thought - no-one would buy it.

Wonder why no publisher has cottoned on to the idea that while 1 million women might buy the shite mags we are offered, that still leaves at least 20 million who rightfully think they are shite and would like something else, please.

Another weblink here. I forget who recommended it to me but it has some good articles, if very sad at times.

Takver · 17/03/2010 21:31

Can't help - I'd read one too though.

The only magazine I read at the moment is the Land (published by The Land is Ours), which isn't remotely related to feminism - but is an excellent read & I'd recommend it to anyone with any interest in politics & equality more widely.

I get Mslexia, which is a writers' magazine for women.
Also 'Perspectives'markets itself as a feminist/socialist/ green political mag.

SolidGoldBrass · 18/03/2010 00:22

How about Filament? It does contain articles about sex and it's USP is photographs of naked men, but it is run by women and is an honest attempt to put together a women's magazine that is a mix of sex-related stuff and intellectually challenging stuff, a bit like what Playboy was supposed to do in the late 60s. They do have a regular column calle 'Ask a Feminist'.

(initiates search for 'flame-proof dungarees')

I love IBTP too Leningrad. Might start a thread about feminist blogs actually, had a massive list but lost it with my old computer. Love the science/feminism ones especially...right thread-launch button has been pressed!

I subscribed to Bust for a year a while back. It's American and in the end didn't have enough that I was interested in for me to keep up a subscription.

I'd probably browse through it though if it was available from anywhere near me though.

CMOTdibbler · 19/03/2010 16:20

I'll go and look at the Filament website on the home PC (not my work laptop ). I used to read the magazine you were involved with iirc SGB, so no flameproof dungies needed.

this is a US magazine too, Bitch I don't subscribe to it (No subscriptions to anything in this penny-pinching household!) but I'd like to, one day. When I get a job.
OH HOW I DREAM OF THAT DAY!
Ahem. Sorry. Graduate study has made me bonkers, today!

overthemill · 19/03/2010 17:59

aah! spare rib. those were the days, but now rally worried as i used to read it, how old is your mum?

i read easy living which does have a mix and is the best of abad bunch. also just started getting 'the week' for teenager but actually really enjoying it myself and she doesn't even open it!

overthemill · 19/03/2010 18:12

actually, thinking about this, what would your 'wish list' be for a feminist magazine? what would it contain , or not contain more like?

SolidGoldBrass · 19/03/2010 21:43

NO SHIT POETRY! For some reason every magazine that starts up with an alternative or well-meaning ideological viewpoint always seems to devote a page or three to absolutely piss-awful poetry written by oppressed people. (Remember the Big Issue's homeless person poetry page? FFS!)
Oh, and it's not that difficult to find someone who is well-intentioned, radical and actually has some basic copy-editing skills...

CMOTdibbler · 20/03/2010 21:00

Def no poetry. And no short stories either - if I want to read those, I'll buy a book.

And not woo, touchy feely kind of stuff too - again, if I was looking for that, I'd go to a health food store and buy one of those mags.

But more features about issues affecting women worldwide. Interviews with women who are doing stuff to challenge these issues. Debate.

I'd welcome shopping stuff if it was showing me things that were fairly traded, providing employment to women under really good conditions

Long articles that actually cover issues in some depth, rather than 1 page that skims the surface
No glossy paper
Poetry fine so long as its good, not keen on short stories though
Long and informed book reviews
Articles on the international situation only if they are well informed and ideally written by people from the countries concerned.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 21/03/2010 22:44

I would like it to be like private eye, if private eye wasn't written by misogynistic asshats. The way they give the story behind the story on political and media issues especially is brilliant.

Funny and political cartoons and writing. News written as if women actually existed in all the matters/countries reported on...amazing how often you can hear the news and it's as if women's existence is a big secret the news media is trying to keep to themselves. Don't mind fashion if it's along the lines of 10 Beautiful Things We Have Seen This Week. Models of all shapes, sizes, ages and races. (Have you seen the "all ages" photoshoots in the guardian? - Hilarious, clothes that suit all ages as long as you are thin, blonde and very white). Lots of stories about women from around the world (not all depressing ones).
