Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Perhaps Woman's Hour should be one of the shows the BBC is cancelling.

Listening to the Media Show on r4 this week, WH's editor said
“Here on Radio 4 many of our audience are over 60. They don’t understand the terminology [of sex and gender] …”
And, carrying on, seemed very pleased about wh's (lamentable) coverage of Gender Issues.
I can only think that it's because this type of woman are so bought into the ideology that they believe they are the good guys.
Tbh I wouldn't care if the programme was scrapped tomorrow.

I thought the role of the BBC was to educate, inform and entertain. If people don’t understand then they should be explaining it.

The only person I know who listens to Women’a hour is my DH and he is in his 40s so not their traget demographic.

HoppityBun · 09/10/2026 19:00

many of our audience are over 60

That would include Dr Hilary Cass

borntobequiet · 09/10/2026 19:08

It’s almost as though those of us in our sixties and seventies hadn’t learned to think for ourselves many fucking years ago.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 09/10/2026 19:41

That comment demonstrates the privileged, complacent bias about society that does so much harm at the BBC. Interesting that, despite all the evidence about how much they've got wrong in terms of mindlessly promoting trans privilege over the rights of others, she can make such a tone deaf comment.

No wonder it's in so much trouble.

Isn’t it typical that, because of gender ideology, the suggestion is being made that something else should be taken away from women?

I don’t support the transification of Women’s Hour, but removing it at a time when women are fighting to be accepted as existing as a separate group from men, would surely be a backwards step. Women’s hour should be fighting trans nonsense with all the other sane women. They had presenters who would have done just that too. The current situation has been deliberately induced by transactivism. It’s not a natural state of affairs.

I agree.

As for the age group of listeners, that is probably the case of much speech radio in general.

In any case, I don't think you should be reducing radio 4 whilst you still have endless series of The Apprentice, overkill with Strictly, and a few other things. The BBC does not make its case for funding whilst it continues to show the foul mouthed disgrace that is the best argument for ending the licence fee- Mrs Brown's Boys.

Pplareasthickasshit · 10/10/2026 07:35

WH is a shadow of its former self. Nula McGowan should be utterly ashamed of herself. She's absolutely appalling. Some of the interviews she's done should have had her taken off air.

Neversofaraway · 10/10/2026 07:57

Mad decision to get rid of "You and yours" which raises lots of useful info about domestic issues for both sexes and is often ahead of other msm. WH is awful, too much fawning over "celebrities"
Can't be bothered with podcasts, too slow and self aggrandising.

Floisme · 10/10/2026 07:59

Oh I understand, perfectly.

Quercus5 · 10/10/2026 07:59

And not a mention of Jenni Murray in their special 80th anniversary programme, even though she presented it for 80 years. I am absolutely spitting.

37 years! Not 80 years.

The programme is 80. She presented from 1987-2020 according to Wikipedia.

But some people love it. We all have a right to our own opinion. And you have an off switch

Loved Jenni Murray. She was hounded out by the TRA mob too.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 10/10/2026 08:18

Cheeky sod. As if the BBC hadn't had a hand in obfuscating the terminology.

And if we asked her to say what biological sex(es) the following mean

  1. man
  2. woman
  3. trans woman
  4. transwoman
  5. trans identified woman
  6. trans identifed female

how many would she get right?

(edited for wrong pronouns :-) )

pinkleavesandtea · 10/10/2026 08:18

I’m early 40s and love this show. Why do you want it cancelled?

Oops, I meant to write 33 years! It’s too early. I need coffee.

Floisme · 10/10/2026 08:41

If it's scrapped then gender ideologues would claim it as a victory and they would have a point. I don't want Woman's Hour gone. I want it back.

Stopbeingsoridiculous · 10/10/2026 09:16

Bog off with your ‘superior ‘ intellect and ‘correct’ ideas. Some of us (3.7million) have enjoyed the program across many decades. Not least for the variety of topics covered. Although you will find this hard to comprehend, we are not all obsessed by the trans debate. You will also be equally shocked to know that at 65. a retired social worker and a veteran of Greenham Common .. I am quite able to form my own opinions on any particular topic. I’m also old enough to realise that some people do not agree with me. This does not mean that a valuable piece of female focussed programming needs to be cancelled. As a pragmatist I simply ignore the bits I don’t want to listen to. It’s not hard.

Sausagenbacon · 10/10/2026 09:24

crikey, you got out of bed on the wrong side this morning, didn't you.

That’s outrageous! And also impossible 🤣

TheRealSmurfette · 10/10/2026 09:28

Is it actually going to cancelled? Or is this hypothetical? It would be like cancelling women. So no change there then.

Sausagenbacon · 10/10/2026 13:01

No. It isn't. My OP says that I think it should be cancelled.

Bog off with your ‘superior ‘ intellect and ‘correct’ ideas. Some of us (3.7million) have enjoyed the program across many decades.

And, as for that outburst, you don't find it problematic that the editor clearly says that she thinks women over 60 are mentally impaired?

pinkleavesandtea · 10/10/2026 13:13

@Stopbeingsoridiculousi really love this response! Yes, we are allowed to form our own opinions. I might be in a minority but the fact the fire right and far left tie themselves up in knots about the BBC being biased, says they are doing the right thing. I struggle to find a radio station that has such interesting programming, radio plays, political opinion and interesting documentary style shows! I love Radio Four and Women’s hour! I love the presenters and I love the variety of guests. The BBC is great (no it’s not perfect) and I feel those who want it defunded are just looking for something to be outraged by. Mistakes will happen! But once it’s gone it’s gone.

So it doesn't bother you that she told everyone, not that the terminology around sex and gender is fiercely contested, nor even that many women probably don't give a toss either way on the subject, but that you're just too old to understand it? Well, you may not mind being smugly patronised by the BBC but I do.

And of course some of the most effective thinkers, writers and campaigners on the subject - Bev Jackson, Kate Harris, Fiona Macanena and Julie Bindel (as well as Dr Cass herself) - are women already over the age of 60. As are Lady Simler and Lady Rose the two female judges on the Supreme Court panel that decided FWS vs. the Scottish Govt.

I wouldn't take the programme off air but it does need to take a good hard look at itself.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 10/10/2026 13:58

Oh, and according to SEEN in journalism (sorry I forget exactly which episode discussed this) the very few programmes that Women's Hour has presented on sex and gender had a massive audience response. Lack of interest from their audience is not the problem.
