NC. Posting on behalf of the #BinTheBill Campaign, encouraging support for the #BinTheBill Day of Action on Sat 24th Oct.

We are a grassroots group working to prevent the dangerous Conversion Practices Draft Bill becoming law. We have listed links on our webpage to some of the other organisations who are concerned about the Draft Bill so you can also view their objections.

STATEMENT OF CONCERNS

We are parents, teachers, safeguarding professionals, feminists, lesbian, gay and bisexual, detransitioners, lawyers, researchers, therapists and clinicians. We unequivocally oppose coercion, abuse, and fraudulent attempts to change anyone’s sexual orientation or sex.

This draft Conversion Practices Bill would do the opposite of what it claims. It weaponises the real history of conversion practices against same-sex attracted people in order to shield and advance the modern conversion of gender-confused children and adults into medicalised transgender pathways.

Legislation that cannot distinguish between abuse and ethical care, free speech, or parental responsibility is not protection — it is ideological capture of the criminal law.

The Bill is legally reckless.

Coercion, abuse and fraud are already crimes. Section 1(2)’s sweeping reference to “any conduct” risks criminalising ordinary conversation, parental guidance, teaching and clinical exploration. There is no statutory defence of reasonableness. The Bill would introduce the nebulous, scientifically unsupported categories of “non-binary” and “gender-fluid” into statute. The result will be a chilling effect, unnecessary criminal investigations, and a surge in family-court disputes — all at a time of national financial strain.

It endangers child safeguarding and exploratory therapy.

Parents must be able to question, challenge and guide their children without fear of investigation. The Bill shows none of the respect for parental responsibility or reasonable behaviour that exists in existing coercive-control law. Grandparents, teachers and social workers will self-censor. Children could even face consequences for refusing to affirm an adult’s belief.

Legitimate exploratory therapy is not conversion. Clinicians must be free to help patients examine complex feelings without predetermined outcomes. The Bill ignores child development, desistance rates, and the adult duty to protect children from irreversible harm. Fear of prosecution will drive cautious professionals out of this work, leaving vulnerable people without support.

It is homophobic in effect.

A high proportion of those identifying as transgender are same-sex attracted. Social transition is an active intervention that locks many young lesbians and gay boys onto a medical pathway of infertility, sexual dysfunction and lifelong health risks. Helping a same-sex attracted young person accept their orientation risks being treated as a crime. This is conversion practice by another name.

It silences women, academics and dissenters.

Women must remain free to name biological sex and defend sex-based rights. Academics and teachers must remain free to pursue evidence and follow safeguarding guidance. The Bill treats contested belief as settled fact and places those who dissent at legal risk. Detransitioners — already often isolated and traumatised — will find it even harder to obtain honest support.

A law that cannot separate coercion from care, or ideology from reality, will harm the people it claims to protect while eroding liberty, professional judgement and parental authority.

Any suggestions for tactics for the street action in 24 October? Should we target areas where we know people will be motivated to contact their MPs? I guess I'm suggesting we go to Conservative constituencies or where Labour MPs are on the fence or on side? I can't see the point of going to Nadia Witless MP constituency for example?

The Bill is likely in the bag with Labour, LD, Green MPs.
The big Q is Tory MPs.
They're the ones who should be most Qd.

Wishesandhorses · 15/10/2026 09:36

It'll go through on the wave of sentiment and unthinking activism with no actual critical thinking or capacity to do the job, which is characteristic of far too many current MPs. Hence the EHRC having to gently offer to do a quick powerpoint workshop to explain to high salaried law makers how making laws actually works only a couple of months ago. And it'll go through in part because the govt very reluctantly had to protect women and gay legal protections against the TQ and this is a sop to throw. So more badly drafted and badly thought out (and in this case highly manipulated) law on top of bad law.

And then we all can sit back and watch the huge raft of very obvious consequences that a child could have seen coming. This is currently life in the UK. There need to be stringent capacity tests for anyone standing as an MP.

If it does go through however, I hope very much we see a lot of cases from detransitioners, gay people and trans widows.

Yes, spot on! Do prioritise Labour MPs who are "on side" or "on the fence" - the same goes for Labour Peers.

TOP PRIORITY AT THIS STAGE ARE LABOUR MPS BECAUSE

  • the Labour Manifesto included a promise to introduce a Conversion Practices Bill - the Labour Party and Labour Government "own" this initiative, which is even more flawed and will prove even more controversial than the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991
  • if a Conversion Practices Bill gets listed for debate during this Parliament then Labour MPs will be whipped to vote for it and it will pass

SOCIAL MEDIA

Many MPs post on Social Media (though it might be their Comms Team actually making the posts). If comments are open, we can reply to their posts raising out concerns.

We can also use local groups on Social Media to raise public awareness, eg. Facebook local "Community" Groups and Pages; NextDoor. Some allow anonymous accounts or anonymous posts if anyone is wary of a backlash from local trans activists.

LOCAL PRESS AND MEDIA

The "Suggested Letter to Newspapers" is another way of raising awareness with of local MPs as well as the wider public:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fd8g5GbR1tqxlz5OgGB-wFRhMbJOF7TH/view

LETTERS AND EMAILS TO MPs

MPs will only attend to letters/emails from Constituents and we all need to write to our MPs - even if we are cursed with a gender identity zealot.

https://www.theyworkforyou.com/

COUNCILS

It is well worth writing to Councils.

Firstly, the impact of the proposed Draft Bill on council services is off-scale financially and practically.

Secondly, Councillors are as integral to political parties as MPs. When they understand the implications for councils they will be very concerned and will feed that back through their Party machinery and to MPs.

Check out Sarah Phillimore's Briefing Note with its Suggested Letter to Councils:
https://sarahphillimore.substack.com/p/briefing-note-on-the-conversion-practices

TRADE UNIONS

A huge disappointment in the whole sex vs gender arena obviously and hopelessly ill-informed. But they fund the Labour Party so are worth lobbying by anyone who can grapple with the democratic structures of their own union or via Social Media, Letters to publications, etc.

There are more resources on BinTheBill on Linktree

The Bill is likely in the bag with Labour, LD, Green MPs.
The big Q is Tory MPs.
They're the ones who should be most Qd.

At this stage, Pre-Legislative Scrutiny, it is Labour MPs who need to be lobbied.

The Labour Party Manifesto included a commitment to bring forward a Conversion Practices Ban Bill so:

  • this will be supported by the Labour Government
  • Labour MPs will be required to support it or risk losing the Whip

The current Draft is staggeringly poor and, given the composition of the Pre-Legislative Scrutiny Committee, it is unlikely to be improved before being introduced to Parliament for debate. At which point, in both the Commons and the Lords, it will be steamrollered through - a re-run of the Gender Recognition Bill's progress in 2004.

The best people to persuade the Government to take a step back and consider the huge electoral damage that this Bill would wreak are Labour's own MPs.

Labour is already under fire for attempting to re-introduce a Blasphemy Law by the back door via the "Islamophobia" aka "Anti-Muslim Hostility" definition and is now on the back foot:
https://freespeechunion.org/news/angela-rayners-department-admits-it-still-has-the-islamophobia

The Conversion Practices Draft Bill represents yet another attack on free speech via another "Blasphemy Law":
https://freespeechunion.org/news/government-brings-forward-conversion-therapy-ban-which-will

Thou shalt not doubt the sanctity of Transgender Identity in all its infinite imaginings and manifestations!

Government brings forward conversion therapy ban which will criminalise parents, therapists and religious leaders for speaking with gender-confused children

The Free Speech Union warns that the Government's proposed conversion therapy ban is so broadly drafted it could criminalise parents and therapists for speaking with gender-confused children.

Anyone who protests this Bill is supporting child abuse.

Simple as.

It's closing a loophole which allowed abusive parents to excuse their violence & intimidation as 'conversion therapy'.

The claims otherwise, are lies.

Social services won't remove children who are being actively neglected. The suggestion they'll remove them for 'discussion' is a lie.

This is not about women's rights.

It's about the rights of physically, emotionally and sexually abusive parents to terrorise their LGBT children.

Opposition to the Bill is being directly funded and encouraged by the homophobic Christian right.

Anyone who opposes it, is advocating for child abuse.

Don't fall for this.

It's as far removed from heroism as you can get.

Stand up for abused kids. Support the Bill.

(Which'll pass anyway. Where exactly was all this organising when the justice system was destroyed under the Tories and left the few rape victims whose cases the CPS actually took up to wait EIGHT YEARS to reach trial? Nonexistent for a reason.)

moto748e · 19/10/2026 22:25

As has been explained in painstaking detail, there are no 'loopholes'; there is plenty of existing legislation to cover violence and intimidation.

BinTheBill · 19/10/2026 23:57

TransParentlyAnnoyed · 11/10/2026 08:56

The reason opposition to this Bill so well-funded and organised is simple: it closes a legal loophole enabling abusive parents to harm their LGBT children under the guide of 'Conversion Therapy'.

So, a few points:

  1. Social services will not remove a child from anyone's care unless they are at high risk of physical or sexual abuse - and the threshold for removal is high. For example, I have reported two partners of single parents.

In case a) the mother was physically attacked, leading to my calling the police after she managed a silent call to me. The man had a long history of DV with multiple partners. Social services interviewed her but did nothing because she could not talk about the abuse. He simply went away, waited for the fuss to die down, then resumed the abuse.

In case b) I reported seeing injuries on a child under 10 caused by the same man picking up the child and throwing him. Social services did nothing at all.

In case c) a single mum attacked my brother by kicking him down a flight of stairs. He managed a silent call to us and my husband listened while I called the police. I called social services saying her five year old boy witnessed everything, and would be in school the next day unable to express how he felt (English being his third language, for a start). His mum was not charged. Social services did nothing.

And you're suggesting parents will be charged for just talking to kids about being LGBTQIA+?! Give over. Parents are only charged when there is overwhelming evidence of neglect or abuse.

  1. Abusive parents are currently able to hide significant neglect or abuse under the guide of 'Conversion Therapy'. It is often carried out in places away from home and by other people. The Bill criminalises this and puts the responsibility onto the parent.
  1. Bullying of LGBT children, making the home intolerable, is already a criminal offence.
  1. The right is pouring significant resources into stopping this Bill because it further normalises being LGBT. It advances LGBT rights and sends the message that there is nothing wrong with being gay, bi, trans, ace, pan or any other identity.
  1. No one is 'transing' gay children, It's a total myth. No parent prefers a trans child to a gay child because

a) they know trans kids can be gay, straight, bi, ace or pan same as cis kids are. Being trans doesn't alter who you are attracted to. For example, my son is trans. He likes men and identifies as a gay trans man. He has never shown any interest in girls. So how, exactly, did I 'trans' him from being a lesbian, as so many terfs have accused? Come to that, how did I 'trans' him in the first place?

b) Parents know the life of a trans child is a massive degree more dangerous and disruptive to their studies than that of a gay child. A gay kid can hide who they are, a trans kid cannot. They are also significantly less likely to pass exams, have good mental health or survive school.

  1. The Bill does not criminalise talking to LGBT kids; what it criminalises is conversion therapy. Existing legislation already covers a parent being neglectful or abusive towards an LGBT kid.
  1. The Bill also spells out to LGBT kids that what their parent calls 'conversion therapy' is abuse. It makes clear to these children that their parent cannot harm them because they disapprove of who they are, and that they should report it.
  1. Anyone who genuinely believes that chatting to a child will be criminalised should read point 1. Social services go to incredible lengths to keep families together and will not intervene unless they believe a child is at risk. What is being criminalised is secret abuse, carried out under the guide of 'Conversion Therapy' which involves significant harm.
  1. No trans child can access surgery. They can only access hormones via the black market and if they have significant cash without parental support. Social transition is a change of name and hair, and in the case of trans boys it may involve binding.

Parents who don't help their trans sons access properly-fitting binders will not stop them binding. They will simply wear tight sports bras or use tape, or wear an ill-fitting second-hand binder. Any of these options will cause a lot more harm than a proper binder.

If parents want to limit the pain caused by binding, they have to be realistic. Get them a binder that fits and don't try to take it away. Accepting their son's identity will also lead him to bind less because that eases dysphoria.

  1. The hyperbole around opposition to this Bill is deliberate. The right does not want to normalise being LGBT, give further protections to LGBT people or remind LGBT children that their parent has no right to harm them. That's it. Trans children already self-ID. So do gay kids.
  1. The vast majority of gay people support this Bill because they know the damage 'Conversion Therapy' has done. The right wish to present it as an attack on being gay, but know perfectly well that it is not. Gay people overwhelmingly support trans people. This Bill will protect gay kids from abusive practices just as it will trans.
  1. Anyone opposing this Bill is supporting child abuse.

The opposition to this badly drafted BIll is funded by us: mums and dads, grandparents and therapists, lesbians and gay and straight, putting in our own small sums of money to pay for brilliant designs to be inexpensively printed so we can share them with our friends and colleagues to distribute In the streets to alert parents to the threat to their good parenting, to try to prevent the trans bullies from converting too many gay or lesbian, or neurodiverse, or multiply traumatised, young people to a life of medicalisation, unnecessary and irreversible harm, and having to live a lie.

It’s well organised because we are all conscientious citizens, determined to demonstrate to MPs that, whatever the question, this Bill is not the answer; it’s full of ignorant or intended untruths.
All the offences that might be committed are already illegal; furthermore those offences already carry higher possible sentences than those provided by this Bill. We have asked ministers and civil servants to say which “gaps” exist in the law and need to be plugged. They cannot say.

We have asked those (actually very well US-funded) bodies which were actively consulted in writing this draft Bill why they are so keen to impose these restrictions on our human rights to look after our young children, why their resulting Bill is so vague and nebulous; they won’t answer, they can’t answer, without giving themselves away. Their purpose is to insert “gender identity” and “non-binary” in the law. They want to silence any opposition with their muzzling of anyone who understands and stands for reality. They want to broaden “transgender” beyond the female and male transsexuals acknowledged by the Gender Recognition Act and they want to recognise any sort of identity, “not limited to any transgender identity” - completely undefined.
How do you create a criminal offence that is focused around “attempting to change someone’s ‘gender identity’ when that law does not even define intelligibly what it means to have such an identity at all?
The Bill is the worst piece of attempted lawmaking since the Dangerous Dogs Act: lawmakers saw a problem, decided they had to do something about it; and their ill-considered, badly-drafted and unworkable mongrel of a law is the answer. “Job done; move on; problem (not) solved.”
We deserve better-written laws than this if we genuinely seek to protect the vulnerable and solve a problem that is still to be properly defined.

This bill actually undermines aspects of statutory safeguarding guidance - both in terms of definitions and practice. As ever it adultifies children - the same issue that runs through all transgenderism.

That any responsible adult promotes the bill is shameful.

Are you seriously suggesting abused kids cannot get help Bill is Law? If so we have failed as a society to protect our most vulnerable.

Children are already protected from abusive parents. If not then someone is not doing their job. This is because no new criminal acts are being brought in everything is already a criminal offence. Rape, neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse this are already illegal.

But what this Bill will do is give glitter families and transactivists the power they so crave to interfere with parents who are telling their children: no you cannot be the opposite sex because no human being can change sex.

This Bill will allow those creepy individuals to intervene in private family life, make allegations and make family life intolerable.

Yes, no parent will probably ever go to jail, but those ideologically captured cultists will make the life of parent hell. And as we know the process is the punishment.

Mumsnet users fear bill will convert them into crims
Four in five in a Mumsnet poll agreed parents should have the right to tell children they are not “in the wrong body”, after a post warned the draft law could criminalise such conversations

Mumsnet users have spoken: four in five poll voters agreed parents should have the right to tell their children they’re not “in the wrong body” and can’t be “transgender”. Of the 898 users who responded to the poll posted last Thursday, 80 per cent agreed with the post and 20 per cent disagreed.

The post warned that under the proposed draft Conversion Practices Bill parents could face up to five years in prison for “denying a child or an adult’s transgender identity.” It also asked whether courts could order them to comply if they “objected to a child being ‘transed’ at school or elsewhere.”
