Marina Hyde backs J K Rowling for PM

Marina Hyde in the Guardian today is asked who she would choose for Prime Minister. Her answer (and an excellent idea all-round) is J K Rowling.

A nod, perhaps, to Hyde's opinion on current issues - and as far as I'm aware, she hasn't entered the debate previously.

And this in The Grauniad too!

Nice to see an up-to-date picture of her. She looks a bit too fresh-faced-and-just-out-of-uni in her standard graun pic. I'd enjoy her world-weary columns more if they weren't topped with the appearance of naivete.

Read this earlier and gave a little cheer. Definitely would have had her down as gender critical but so good to have it confirmed. She knows perfectly well she will get some shit for it but said it anyway. Good for her 👍

She's given very tiny hints in the past of being gender-critical/sex-realist. I've always been disappointed that she hasn't been more forthright - after all, she has a prominent platform from which to shout her opinions. Either the Guardian won't let her, or she was afraid of the fallout. Look what happened to Suzanne Moore and Hadley Freeman.

Though so far, for Reddit, some of the comments are surprisingly ok!

On an episode of The Rest is Entertainment, she mentioned how much she hated the phrase “on the wrong side of history”. At the time, this was a phrase that was used by her Guardian colleague Owen Jones to describe women who were of the GC persuasion. There was a discussion of it here and it was felt that this comment was (at least in part) a dig at OJ. Also, JKR is regularly mentioned on the podcast and I’ve yet to hear either presenter say a negative word about her.

You can be assured that she is genuinely anti-trans and was not doing a bit.

Me too. Well, I also miss the late Sarah Hughes and the Game of Thrones community below the line chats we had, and I miss Hadley Freeman as well, but of course that situation (her leaving the guardian due to the women's rights issues and Jewish issues) was what set me on my path of discovery, so I suppose in a way I have to thank Hadley even though I miss her articles! Some I wouldn't always agree with, but she had the same taste in films as me.

I have Marina's book - the collection of her best columns and it's very funny.

It's good that the Guardian can print a piece that mentions JKR, shades of the old paper peaking through.

Lives do not get "ended" because someone talks reality, biology and safeguarding.

I'm hugely sorry for vulnerable people who cannot see a way out - and their families who are affected by suicide. But it's horrendous to suggest that someone has "helped" that. Or are you suggesting she's incited literal murder? I would be very interested to see the stats.
