Does anyone know if there are any nice pools with single sec changing within the Stockport/High Peak area please? I’m wanting to start swimming again but not if places aren’t single sex.

I’ve realised this might be foolish, so perhaps where to avoid would be a better question. I can access Tameside too but wouldn’t want to travel into Manchester City centre.

In other news, I visited Edinburgh for the first time and was shocked to discover boxes of 8 or 10 Tunnocks tea cakes on sale for £8!!! Daylight robbery. Less than £2 for 6 at supermarkets, even Waitrose!

They were only £3.99 in the airport 😬

Public or private? Your best chance of single sex changing, sadly, is in private facilities. The Tyrherington Club Macclesfield, the one in the centre of Macc near the station whose current name I don't know. Buxton is definitely mixed. Huge place on the A34 reachable from Stockport depending on traffic on the airport A6 link road. Waterside at Parrswood is a lovely bike ride along the Mersey from the Pyramid.

@Imdunfer agree. I was going to say same. Look at spa memberships rather than public pools.

I don’t know the area but if there is a Bannatyne’s near you, they have single sex changing rooms.

It shouldn’t be this difficult should it? We should be able to go to our local pool and have single sex changing facilities. Dd suggested getting changed in the loo. I’d already considered it.

@Imdunferagree on Waterside which also has a really nice pool. Nuffield Health at Parrs Wood used to have single sex changing 15-20 years ago. The council run pools that I know of are all changing village types but some do have times set aside for women only when the changing rooms should be single sex.

I completely forgot that huge place at Parrswood itself! Definitely separate because they are refurbishing the men's right now.

Tbf the swimming pool at Waterside is a lot nicer than the one at Nuffield Health.

They are all so expensive when all I want is to swim. I’d have to get two buses to Waterside. I might have to suck it up and used mixed changing or become a dry robe wanker and travel there in my swimsuit and a dry robe.

I'm lucky with my local gym it's really cheap for one with a big pool. Dry robe sounds like a good idea. I hope you get your swim.

Ex lifeguard here.

Leisure centres can’t win with this. If they have single sex changing rooms they get complaints from parents and carers bringing their opposite sex children to the pool, especially if they are disabled or have learning difficulties. The complaints are mostly mothers not wanting to send their 9, 10 and 11yo sons to the male changing in case there are pervs in there. We did have a separate disabled changing room for one person or one family; which was hardly ever used but it was remarkable how often two lots of people wanted to use it as tbe same time, which was not possible.

If they have unisex changing rooms, they get complaints from women.

In the end, most leisure centres are opting for unisex changing because it is cheaper - you need fewer cubicles and showers because all can be used by both sexes. In single sex changing, you need almost double the number of cubicles because some sessions are almost exclusively one sex (eg aquaaerobics is often something like 39 women and 1 man). With fewer cubicles, that lowers the cleaning costs too.

I cannot use single changing as I (rightly) can’t take my learning disabled teen boy in with me to a woman’s changing room so am glad most public pools have mixed changing villages now tbh.
