Bnei Brak set to become Israel's first city with sex segregated streets

Bnei Brak is set to become the first city in Israel with gender-segregated streets, after the municipality decided to turn sections of Shlomo Hamelech and Ezra streets into segregated streets, Channel 13 first reported on Tuesday.

The decision designates the section near several event halls as a gender-segregated area, following a directive from the city's rabbis, who argued segregation was needed to manage large crowds. The municipality added that the policy could be extended to other streets in the future.

The municipality issued a statement in response to the report, and claimed that "the letter from the city's rabbis is very clear and speaks for itself."

"The public in the city, who trust in obedience to the great men of Israel and listen to their words, will fulfill their request," the statement said.

Hey, it works in Afghanistan. Why not?

I’m confused. What happens if your family home or your job is on a female only or male only street?!

GrumpyPanda · Yesterday 19:09

It's licence to violently harass women who stray onto the "wrong" streets. Unfuckingbelievable.

I thought they had tried it is some areas which had a high percentage of more Orthodox communities a few years ago, but it was stopped from being implemented.

I think there may even have been a FWR at the time.

So surprised to see it being put in to place again even if in a small area - because The public in the city, who trust in obedience to the great men of Israel and listen to their words, will fulfill their request,

But also think the idea of different exams etc., for women really concerning and was glad some are speaking out against it.

So in the interest of getting women from more conservative religious groups Israel has accepted the need to women only education / exams?

Does that also mean that women can opt for only treating women patients?

Where does this fit in with the "we should support Israel bombing Palestinians because the Palestinians aren't nice to women" view that seems very popular on this bit of Mumsnet?

PigletJohn · Today 18:25

Israel already has streets in Palestine that are segregated by ethnicity. Jewish and other people are allowed to walk or drive along them, and Arabs aren't.
