I wanted to share this from BBC:
Amnesty 'regret' over JK Rowling sex assault centre criticism - BBC News

Apologies if there is already a thread for this, I could not see it though...

The human rights charity had characterised the women-only service in Edinburgh as "anti-rights".

Thanks for posting.

There are two threads already going, both are very interesting. It's worth you having another look to find them. I'll see if I can link...

SwearOnChanel · 15/07/2026 11:19

Thank you, this is very helpful!

Great to see the BBC writing about this in a far more balanced way than they would have done last year.

MarieDeGournay · 15/07/2026 11:45

Thanks OP, I don't mind that this piece of relatively good news reported by the BBC in a relatively acceptable way got its own threadSmile
But I don't think that the headline is correct - Amnesty's statement of 'regret' was general, not specifically about Beira's Place, so I expect Amnesty will continue to get individual complaints and threats of legal action from lots of the groups mentioned.
Unless AI has in fact responded specifically to Beira's Place? I'll have a look over on the other threads to see what the latest is.

MoistVonL · 15/07/2026 11:48

They've apologised publicly about Beira's Place. But not to all the small grassroots organisations run by volunteers.

Mealy-mouthed, cowardly libellous sods. I can't believe I used to give Amnesty money back when I was a skint student.

RobinEllacotStrike · 15/07/2026 11:49

Telegraph reports an apology but I would not call an expression of regret an apology 😳

the court cases to come out of this are going to be fascinating

I wonder if the BBC will follow this up with some investigative reporting about how this report is being touted by anti-women activists to justify their violent rhetoric, and whipping up unhinged hysteria amongst the loony tunes.

Something nasty is going to happen, and AI UK will have helped it happen.

icingonmycupcake · 15/07/2026 19:43

Where did they apologise specifically for naming Beira's Place?

All I can see is the general apology. But the heading of the BBC article suggests a more specific 'regret'.

HermioneWeasley · 15/07/2026 19:47

It’s barely an apology.

the letter before action from Beira’s Place is chef’s kiss

CornishDaughteroftheDawn · 15/07/2026 19:54

“Its use of language does not reflect the position of Amnesty International UK, which is why it was promptly removed.

To me, that’s not saying that they realise they shouldn’t have blacklisted these charities, just that they didn’t use the right language when publicising their blacklist.

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 15/07/2026 20:08

I wonder if the author of the report, Chiara Capraro, Gender Justice Programme Director has been sacked yet. 😂
