Putting violent men in women’s prisons: where was Scottish civil society? New article by MBM

This blog details our first attempt, via an academic article, to alert Scottish civil society to the Scottish Prison Service’s policy of placing some male prisoners in female prisons. We then look at how civil society, including academia and human rights charities, have responded more generally to the emergence of this issue in public debate.

We conclude that on this issue those whose paid day job is to provide an evidence-based critique of Scottish public policymaking have failed badly in a core civic role.

Gosh, with such an incisive expose in this article, I can completely see why Amnesty has classified the terrorists who comprise Murray Blackburn Mackenzie as a "hate group". 😬They clearly "hate" women, don't they?

Thanks for the link, it's fascinating and horrifying, they have all the receipts, it gives a good view of how the whole rotten thing unfolded.

It's quite sickening to find out how easily it was done, how easily women in women's prisons were literally forgotten, how open to manipulation so many people in positions of power and responsibility are.
I hope they keep it up, turn over all the rocks and expose every last stinking maggot. 😤

And if they've got time, turn their attention to Amnesty next, 🤮

I feel like someone typed that article with great bitterness, as I would have done, at being stigamatised and vilified for years and years despite having an entirely reasonable point.

In a way what is also sad is that a group like this, and there are others, who are doing such detailed, and analytic work are often ignored by some women who prefer clever one liners, etc..

I think there is place for both, but just hope that one day more women (and the stupidly ignorant media) would pay MBM more attention.

In fact if it wasn't for FWR not sure I would have heard of them.

Maybe one day the Guardian will ask them to write something - as if!

When it came to the housing of violent men in women’s prisons… most salaried professionals in Scotland with relevant expertise either remained silent or threw their weight behind gender self-identification.

Some of those men were in prison for murder and still senior management, politicians and legal academics did not hesitate in housing them with vulnerable women. Extraordinary how powerful is an instinct to serve men.

The decision to allow the torture of female prisoners with the presence of males in their prison is nothing short of evil.

To be fair to Amnesty they classified MBM not as a "hate group" but as "anti-rights" which translates as pro-women. Along with MBM there were dozens of other women's rights groups like FWS, WRN etc similarly libelled. They even have Beira's Place the Edinburgh Sexual Assault Support Centre among their list of "anti-rights" groups because it's funded by JKR.

Amnesty's lawyers must have intervened as the report has been removed from their website but it's not going to stop them having their arse sued off for libel.
