A growing threat: the anti-rights movement in the UK says Amnesty who claim over 50% are Gender Critical groups

Quote:

Anti-rights actors seek a society in which women and men have fixed and distinct roles, based on what they view as ‘natural’ and ‘traditional’. These actors perceive the idea that gender is socially constructed as a threat because it suggests that gender roles can, and do, change across societies and over time. In fact, progress in the rights of women and LGBT+ people has been underpinned by changing understandings of gender and social roles.

Anti-rights actors refer to this perceived threat as ‘gender ideology’, portraying it as an attack on national traditions, family structures, marriage and religious freedom. These narratives often seek to generate fear and uncertainty and rely on misinformation or exaggerated claims.

The term ‘gender ideology’ emerged in the context of debates within international institutions, particularly the United Nations, about gender equality and sexual and reproductive rights.

In 1964, the Holy See became a Permanent Observer at the UN General Assembly, the only religious body with this status. As a permanent observer the Holy See can participate in processes at the General Assembly as well as other UN bodies. It cannot vote but it has the possibility to co-sponsor resolutions if a member state requests a vote. Although it cannot vote, the Holy See can participate in UN discussions and processes and has played an influential role in debates on women's rights and LGBT+ rights.

The term ‘gender ideology’ gained prominence in response to progress on gender equality and Cairo in 1994. These conference were a landmark moment for the global women's rights movement. The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action is widely regarded as a key international framework for advancing women's rights and gender equality, and states continue to report on its implementation through the Commission on the Status of Women.

While opposition to sexual and reproductive rights predates the Beijing conference, the term ‘gender ideology’ became a particularly important response to the advances achieved there. The phrase was coined to explain the growing influence of gender equality agendas and to mobilise opposition to them.

Although the term originated in debates at the international level, it has since become a broad political narrative used by a wide range of anti-rights actors. Today, it is often used to connect campaigns against gender equality, sexual and reproductive rights, and LGBT+ rights across different countries and contexts.

I blame a lot of this on the rhetoric you hear which claims Tories are evil people that hate women, poor people, minorities of all types, and would be happy to see babies eaten by alligators if it enriched them.

That kind of talk is so ubiquitous, from people who seem to have no actual exposure through print or in person to a normal conservative position.

So even things they do that seem good are interpreted as being in bad faith. Maybe even a dastardly trick.

One of the interesting effects of gender ideology has being that all of a sudden some women in the left are seeing people on the right, especially other women, who are fighting seriously and effectively for women's rights. Women who they would previously dismissed as anti feminist.

The 'all Tories are racist scum' rhetoric does several things: it dumbs down debate, it demonises anyone even vaguely right of centre, and it can end up with some people on the Left never challenging their own arguments because they avoid mixing with the politically impure.

The way some of the Left pumps out the 'Tories are all racist anti-immigrant scum' would make anyone think that Kemi was some sort of a psy-op.

It's bemusing that we are constantly vilified as "right-wingers", as though right-wing people are automatically in the wrong. The logic, if there is any, seems to be, "If you're gender-critical, you're aligned with/funded by the right-wing, therefore you're wrong and that's the end of it."

Although I'm on the left, that doesn't mean that I agree with all left-wing policies or politicians, nor that I disagree with all right-wing policies and politicians. And I'm still struggling to understand the "funding" allegations. Where do they get this nonsense?

BridgetYourFortyDaysAreUp · 30/07/2026 10:47

@SwirlyGates

My theory is that it's because this can't accurately be proven or disproven that they latch onto the funding trope. It's very easy to just declare over and over again.

As is the conflation of women's rights with "right wing" to which I answer: "yes, and some women are on the Right, politically, for a variety of reasons. Get over it."

I am extremely socialist with some political topics, and once scored as "UKIP" on a questionnaire about children's education! 😁

What does that make me? Malcolm in the Middle? How dull!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 30/07/2026 11:07

That’s why I think this really needs to go to court, so their “evidence” can be examined.

Where do they get this nonsense? America. Because in America, all politicians and political movements are funded by billionaires for their own advantage; it's so expensive running for any sort of office that they have to be. JK Rowling was a real godsend to the brainless, but she's the only billionaire in this country funding anything for women as far as I know. Are there others? If there are they are not apparently getting wallpaper's worth of death threats.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 30/07/2026 11:36

If it’s Beiras Place alone who sue, they’re onto a loser as JKR will have funded them entirely, I imagine. It’s technically possible that for any one of the others they could dig up some tenuous guilt by association dirt. But I think they’ll struggle with Beiras Place. It really was a stupid, tribalistic move playing to the gallery.

Beira’s Place is indeed funded entirely by JKR. They don’t take donations from anyone, and if you offer them they will suggest other places for you to donate. This is - I believe- so that they can remain independent.

The Times, upon whom be a murrain, has decided it can't "verify" my "device". It couldn't yesterday either. Is there an archive of this article and the one about the Amnesty founder's grand-daughter?

MarjorieWestriding · 30/07/2026 18:06

It hasn't been archived yet but try this: <a class="break-all" href="https://removepaywalls.com/www.thetimes.com/uk/scotland/article/amnesty-christian-watchdog-anti-rights-gender-critical-0hzbf7tt9" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://removepaywalls.com/www.thetimes.com/uk/scotland/article/amnesty-christian-watchdog-anti-rights-gender-critical-0hzbf7tt9

A complete and utter derail, but...

Iseult White [who I admire greatly] is not just the granddaughter of one of the co-founders of Amnesty, she is also the great-granddaughter of Maud Gonne who was - though English-born - an Irish Republican and suffragist.

She was also the great muse of WB Yeats, for whom he wrote as a young poet:

Had I the heavens’ embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half-light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

and in later life :

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face...

If you see my post just a bit up thread, you can read what these groups themselves are saying.

If you click directly on the remove paywall bit of the link, it worked for me.

Clicking on that bit gets me nowhere, but if I copy and paste the whole thing it works. Thank you.

But only for the one about Christian groups.

I think there's still a thread on Site Stuff about problems on MN due to Cloudflare. Earlier on in the week, it was terrible for me! Couldn't get onto anything, but only links from MN were the problem.

Beautiful. What's happened to the use of the English language? Do schoolkids these days actually do much writing? Spell-check only seems to have made matters worse; nobody seems to be able to write a decent sentence and punctuate it properly. Nobody seems to know (or care) the difference between its and it's. Well, I suppose AI can all do it for you. 🙄It's dismal.

Sorry too much text. I don't understand the thread title. Can you summarise?

I had to read it again. It means:

Amnesty says that the the anti-rights movement in the UK is a growing threat and claims over 50% are Gender Critical groups.

MaIeficent · 30/07/2026 23:31

But on the topic, I don't want to hear any more word salad tbh. I just don't want a bearded male with his cock out standing next to me in the communal showers.

Their argument sounds a bit like a pickpocket trying to accuse somebody of being against wealth distribution/charity/helping the poor when really he's just trying to justify stealing your handbag.
