Cervical cancer deaths fall to zero in young women given HPV vaccine

I thought I'd post some positive news!

Between 2020 and 2024, no cervical cancer deaths were recorded in women aged 20 to 24 - the first time that had happened over a five-year period.
Without vaccination, around 23 deaths would have been expected.

Really good news, but it would be good to hear that condoms are being used by boys and men.

That is indeed wonderful news 😍!! Thanks for sharing!

That's excellent. I know there had been some questions about whether we would see other more unusual strain begin to move in, instead, so it's a great thing that has not been the case.

It's amazing news. I looked after a very poorly young woman many years ago who fell into this age bracket, she was dying from cervical cancer.

To hear that this is going to be prevented is absolutely fantastic.

It's really great news and I hope that evidence that this programme is working will encourage more parents to get their DC vaccinated, as the take-up rate has dropped off quite a bit since the pandemic.

It's important that both girls and boys get vaccinated, to eradicate HPV. Boys and men can also get mouth and throat cancer as a result of exposure to the HPV virus (I actually know a man who got this cancer and it's now terminal Sad) so it's vital that boys get vaccinated too.

Thanks for this, OP, very good news!

I note the use of "girls" and "women" throughout that BBC article, which is in its own way another bit of good news.

From the article:

"It's essential that the UK Government and health systems urgently address this with targeted action to reach communities where uptake is the lowest," says Michelle Mitchell at Cancer Research UK.
Despite the rollout of the HPV vaccine, women aged 25 to 64 are still advised to attend cervical screening (formerly known as a smear test).

No clearer example of why UK Government and health systems need to ensure they use terminology defined by reality (do they know what a girl/woman is?), target their publicity correctly (biology, anyone?), and avoid activist obfuscation. The NHS especially needs to stop denying reality.

And trans-identified girls need to be told in clear terms that this applies to them as well!

What an odd take.

👏👏👏👏 As a mum of three young women I’m so happy to hear this. My best friend died of cervical cancer at 41 leaving two young girls. I’m happy her girls don’t have to worry about dying the same way.

Fantastic. A lovely bit of good news.

Just saw this, it's wonderful news.

My aunt died of cervical cancer - I never met her, and it devastated my grandmother forever.

My daughter is protected. ❤

Iwanttobeafraser · 18/06/2026 12:02

Yes, I was super excited to read a version of this about a year ago that said that to date, there is no case of a woman who has had the HPV vaccination getting cervical cancer! It's incredible.

MassiveWordSalad · 18/06/2026 12:05

This is brilliant news. It’s great to have positive news here 🎉

LattePatty · 18/06/2026 12:07

I was so pleased to see this news. What a fantastic win for science and medicine. My son is vaccinated and his younger brother will be too.

Barbie222 · 18/06/2026 19:34

That’s fantastic! I’ve been under recall for long term HPV infection and need further tests now, so it’s good to know my generation is hopefully the end of it.

Both men and women can get HPV mouth cancers. Not just men

beigetriangle · 18/06/2026 21:33

the evidence is indisputable.
my dc (both sexes) have had the vaccine.
