Can anyone suggest books or other resources for a 12 yr old girl which reinforce the reality of biological sex and counter the mermaid type perspectives on gender ideology in an accessible way?

I dont think you need books on biological reality. Precisely because theres not much to explain. Man, woman done.

Its gender identity which needs books because it needs 50 million pages to form a circular argument.

What you need is culture and values.

Watching with interest because how can you create the rich culture that i grew up with (millennial). Everyone I know thinks this is nonsense after they think about for 2 seconds. Thats due to our upbringing. The 90s was such a vibrant time and I dont know what exactly made us resilient to this.

David Bowie? Micheal Jackson? I dont know but there were a lot of famous men who liked to dress up. And women were strong in their identity too. We had sporty spice, avril lavigne 😂

TV shows which made light of stuff; simpsons, family guy, little Britain, South Park. Amazing movies with strong characters.

I do feel for the kids today. I dont think they have half the richness we had in our lives. In a weird way because they have so much - theres a trillion options to stream. Whereas when we were younger everyone watched the same stuff on tv and I think that added to cohesion and shared values.

"Written and illustrated by the hugely talented Phoebe Rose, this engaging book will help young people explore questions about sex, gender, sexual orientation and gender stereotypes in an age-appropriate way. This wonderful guide provides a vital opportunity for young people to have positive, healthy discussions that promote true body positivity and embrace diversity.
Phoebe, a former teacher, is a young lesbian woman with a recent ASD diagnosis. This is reflected in her relatable, humourous and diverse characters that bring every page to life.
Teens and pre-teens are surrounded by confusing messages about sex and gender. Parents and teachers have told us there is a lack of clear, factual and accessible information for this age group. We’re confident that Sex And Gender will fill this gap and become an important addition to the RSE or PHSE curriculum. "

I wonder whether non-fantasy fiction which centres around girls behaving in non-stereotyped ways would be useful, particularly books which may have now dropped off school reading lists. I'm thinking of novels that are using things like empowerment or cross-dressing as a means to practical problem solving in a sexist world, rather than as something that's essential to become 'one's true self' etc, or celebrating young women being clever, independent, energetic, creative, bold... all the usual normal stuff. The female leads never doubt that they are still female at the end.

There's books like Geoffrey Trease's historical novel Cue for Treason (1940) (girl cross dresses as a boy to go on the run to escape an arranged marriage and ends up working with Shakespeare).

I think Celia Rees has feisty young female cross-dressing pirates in her 18th Century novel of that name. I have Pirates (2003) on my shelf but still haven't yet read it.

There's also The Turbulent Term of Tyke Tyler (1977) by Gene Kemp which has a great twist at the end and won the Carnegie Medal that year. The protagonist is 12 years old and challenges sexist stereotypes.

Thank you everyone - open for suggestions about other media ? Is anyone aware of any YouTube videos or podcasts suitable for a tween that emphasise that there is no separate gender identity
