A former teacher has been found guilty of sexually abusing and murdering a baby boy that he planned to adopt.

Jamie Varley, 37, was convicted at Preston Crown Court of murder, child cruelty, sexual offences and indecent images relating to 13-month-old Preston Davey.

John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, was convicted of allowing the death of a child, child cruelty and sexual assault.

Varley was in the process of adopting baby Preston (also known as Elijah) with his partner McGowan-Fazakerley. Just four months after being placed with the couple, Preston was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital unconscious and in cardiac arrest. Sadly, Preston could not be saved.

Varley tried falsely claiming that Preston had accidentally drowned in a bath, but prosecutors were able to prove that his injuries were consistent with his airways being obstructed.

The evidence presented by the prosecution proved that in the final months of Preston’s life, he was routinely ill-treated, sexually abused and physically assaulted – suffering more than 40 separate injuries.

I thought there was a thread about this, but cant find one. But sorry if a duplicate.

I really only wanted to post out of respect for this poor baby and the horror of his short life.

I have just seen this on the BBC news - how absolutely horrific.

nocoolnamesleft · 15/06/2026 17:59

Truly evil. Poor, poor Preston.

There is another thread currently running, where I'm getting told by the OP that my heart is full of hate and that these two monsters were babies too at one time, when I said I hope these two monsters suffer every single day for the rest of their miserable lives!

I'm with you
I hope they're strung up in a position they can be sexually assaulted like they did to this poor baby. Death penalty is too good for them....daily forced oral and anal penetration against their will is a far better punishment.

Pilgrimlady · 15/06/2026 18:10

@Squirrelchops1 I am a peaceful, law abiding person and I do not wish any harm to come to prison officers whilst these monsters are getting exactly what they deserve (I've had it all thrown at me). I agree entirely with everything you say!

Me too. I'm all for rehabilitation of offenders etc but certain crimes I just ......can't.....

Well dont know what the other thread is but in all honesty my response (and I said something similar on the thread about men pushing women over) that more and more it seems that men shouldn't be allowed to do anything on their own, and need constance supervision.

I am aware that of course there have been instances of women being abusive to children.

But the majority of the time it is men.

Like all those government campaigns about ending violence against women.

Why are these campaigns never saying what are we going to do about violent and abusive men.

This is probably the most horrific case I've ever read.

The baby died because 'an object had been placed in his mouth' and he suffocated.

This was after repeated visits to hospital and social workers seeing all sorts of bruises on the baby's body.

They only had the baby for 115 days.

Police believe they began the sexual abuse on day one of getting the baby.

Apparently at least one person did raise an alarm but it led to nothing.

This reminds me of Surrey Fostering continuing to support Pride in Surrey after the chairman had just been convicted of drugging and raping a child.

These services are often run by ideologues who think not being accused of bigotry is more important than child safeguarding.

IMO two men should only be allowed to adopt a child in extreme circumstances.

But adoption services now actively market to gay men - Surrey Fostering for example pays Pride in Surrey to have a stall and a presence on their website.

TeaAndStrumpets · 15/06/2026 18:23

The other thread is in Parenting, it's been running for a while.
The Times has disabled comments very quickly.

So often it's men . They can use their cocks for punishment while getting their own pleasure. That's why they can be dangerous.

MinnieCauldwell · 15/06/2026 18:27

Assume they put themselves forward as adoptive parents soley to get a baby to torture. No words

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 15/06/2026 18:28

The only positive I can take is these vile specimens were dumb enough to plead innocent which will hopefully ensure even longer sentences.

That poor child... first his mother then these 2 pieces of detritus.

The social workers and safe guarding staff in the hospital also need to take a long hard look at themselves.

The (lovely) foster mum repeatedly flagged concerns but was basically told to stfu presumably because gay adopters are so liberal and progressive and so sit down and shut up.

IwantToRetire · 15/06/2026 18:28

Not only is what happen horrific the man convicted was a teacher with responsibility for safeguarding Angry

I didn’t know the foster mum was raising concerns. Do we know what? That poor woman.

We were all babies- that doesn’t mean we can’t torture other babies when we grow up…

Absolute bastards- I hope they rot.

Pilgrimlady · 15/06/2026 18:30

It's in the Parenting section and entitled "Baby Preston Davey". Posters on there seem to think them just losing their liberty is punishment enough and I replied that I didn't want to hear about them passing their prison time taking educational courses, doing arts and crafts or whatever. I can't believe the excuses people are making for them, they were babies too once, they are sick and need help etc After reading about what they put poor little Preston through I could batter them myself and I am a peaceful, law abiding, middle aged woman. Who on earth gave these two men that beautiful little baby and who on earth didn't spot that he was being abused? I hope they live in fear every day of their lives and that prison "justice" is handed out to them on a daily basis!

This won't have been the first child he abused then

OneNaiceSnail · 15/06/2026 18:31

I’ve been wondering for a while who the birth parents were. Apparently mum was 14 years old and convicted of murdering a pensioner??

followtheswallow · 15/06/2026 18:33

@Pilgrimlady it isn’t about making excuses, I just don’t want to read pages and pages of posters outdoing one another with tales of what they hope will happen. That isn’t honouring Preston; it’s the opposite if anything. That’s the judicial system in this country and I don’t really care much for the baying mob type justice, sorry, never have.

I think the foster mum flagged concerns because they wouldn’t let her see Preston but from a non abusive context that’s not necessarily sinister.

TequillaSunset · 15/06/2026 18:34

I never meant to read this earlier - but did, and I sobbed.

The unimaginable terror and pain this baby suffered makes me want to scream and never stop. We aren't meant to be able to process such evil. I literally feel heavy pain in my chest thinking about this poor beautiful little boy.

I am not normally one for hysterics and knee jerk reactions, but I can readily imagine how they should be dealt with. I would even assist, with no hesitation.

I hope they never feel a moment's peace for the rest of their evil depraved, wretched fucking lives.

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 15/06/2026 18:35

DSL is the new Priest imo. There have been so many of them found guilty of offences against children.
I was discussing with a college who works in training recently and she has a huge concern that the training teaches them ways to hide in plain sight.
Evil predators will go to any lengths to target their prey.

Dad was a criminal too. The maternal grandma wanted to raise Preston, as she was raising his sibling, but unfortunately she was very ill with breast cancer. The foster mother wanted to keep him. Social Services thought he needed to be adopted, so they forged ahead.

SilenceInside · 15/06/2026 18:36

I don’t have any words that are adequate to convey the horror I feel reading about this case and the absolute rage that this tiny child was not protected by anyone.

I can’t fathom how dead inside these men must be to decide to do what they did.

IwantToRetire · 15/06/2026 18:36

Its also that same old error that because someone is assumed to be a better person because they are a professional, then can be believed.

And also most have left his foster mother distraught. She has raised concerns.
