Why don’t women riot?

Not looking for a specific discussion on this week’s events, but a broader one.

Basically, why do so few women riot? Arguably, they have far more to be angry about than men do!

Because we're more socialised not to take out our problems on other people than men are maybe?

SilenceInside · Yesterday 22:03

It’s the same reasons why women don’t tend to commit much violent crime in general. Women often internalise anger and inflict it on themselves rather than externally on other people. What proportion of that is due to socialisation, culture, physical differences, etc etc is something that is endlessly debated.

Perhaps we don’t decend into anarchy and try to find another, constructive, better way that doesn’t include mindless violence and disorder that can harm the cause you’re purportedly fighting for

Too busy looking after the children.

Dominoodles · Yesterday 22:07

Woman are socialised to 'put up and shut up', to take on extra burdens so we don't burden others, to stay quiet and accept 'it's not about us', even with it should be.

That can be pretty toxic but it's also very difficult behavior to break out of.

This sums it up nicely. Also the fact that, unfortunately, many of the things women could be expected to riot over, often many of them actually agree with/don't think are a problem – despite those things being against their own interests.

MabelsBeats · Yesterday 22:11

Because we’re physically weaker than men, and we know this - we would be vulnerable in a crowd of rioters. We’re also genetically pre-programmed to want to preserve things and not destroy them, and because we don’t have the hormonal drive to (lack of testosterone).

That’s just my opinion, off the top of my head.

PermanentTemporary · Yesterday 22:12

Because rioting is a crime, is visibly dangerous and they are vulnerable? There aren’t many women who would voluntarily put themselves out on the street in the dark among lots of coked up or drunk violent young men who are chucking bricks about and setting things on fire?

There used to be food riots by crowds of women in the 17th century when there were still actual famines in this country, so the risk of starvation is what it takes I think.

AMurderofMurderingCrows · Yesterday 22:16

Maybe we should riot.

Think of the boys and men. Who will keep them safe if we don't riot.

PermanentTemporary · Yesterday 22:18

Interesting @Kingfisherfan65 - no women in that picture and one arrest reported - of a man.

SpringCalling · Yesterday 22:20

@Kingfisherfan65I hadn’t seen this - thank you! So … food and votes we women will fight for!

Yes, it's a shame they didn't get a photo of the women trying to turn the car over!

Exactly. The important things in life.

Oranginacatterpilla · Yesterday 22:25

Less testosterone

Wishesandhorses · Yesterday 22:27

You see it here - generally, even when furious, women still tend to think about and care about the impact of their actions on others, the needs of others, and to use negotiation, reasoning and people skills, and to want agreement more than dominance. Often long after it's been proven they're talking to a brick wall.

ArabellaScott · Yesterday 22:30

My knees aren't up to it, personally.

ArabellaScott · Yesterday 22:32

But bluntly, men commit 80% of violent crime. Partly ability and partly inclination, I expect.

onpills4godsake · Yesterday 22:34

They do

elgreco · Yesterday 22:34

Because we might get hurt!

giemepeace · Yesterday 22:37

Many of these comments cover it. Also we are too intelligent to waste our time and energy on mindless destruction. Protest, is worthwhile.

PermanentTemporary · Yesterday 22:40

Trying (and failing?) to turn over the car of a man who had caused some form of trouble already…

Too busy looking after the children.

I think this is the primary reason, either to busy looking after kids or can't take the risk of arrest/ detention because who would look after the children, might lose children etc.

Testosterone.

Men generally don't riot because of issues in society. Men (and women) protest because of issues of issues in society. Issues in society just give some men an excuse to riot, when the real reason they're rioting is just because they find violence fun and its a good excuse.

I don't think the recent protests were riots though? That's an official definition and you literally have to read the riot act. But it's true. Women are much less likely to go out on the streets and cause aggro, partly because it is not safe for us, partly because we are socialised not to (except in dire necessity i.e. food riots and kicking up a fuss about not being allowed to vote) and someone has to keep the children safe.
