The BBC is trolling us at this point...

This is unbelievable, a trans woman is taking 6-12 months off, funded by the tax paying, to relax and enjoy life, which they find stressful. What is the BBC hoping for here? Does anyone listen to that and not feel angry that this man is taking money from the system that is so desperately needed by others with genuine need?

Sounds like they want an angry reaction, what are the comments like?

That’s not the fault of the BBC. It’s a phone in. It’s helpful they posted it, I guess. It illustrates the issue with benefits. They aren’t only supporting people who have no other choices.

Programmes don't just take any old calls. They have teams of producers and researchers vetting and selecting callers. Every one you hear broadcast results from a conscious choice by the production team.

Yes, the caller could well have been a 'benefits troll' as we often see on here,'proving' that you can live well on benefits (although they say they haven't even applied for any yet, so possibly not).

But they do say they've tried to find work, have a degree, but haven't been able to get a supermarket job interview. They attribute it to potentially being too much of a legal risk to employers (not sure if they would have the data to back that up - surely the whole point of the piece is that it's incredibly common to not find work, whoever you are?)

If that really is the case then Stonewall have done quite a number convincing people that they can do what they like with no legal consequences - and instead of any sensible solutions being reached decades ago, people are just seeing court case after court case after the line that 'all spaces are mixed-sex' hasn't worked.

Yes of course. But they presumably received a lot of calls and played a variety of them, including one where a chap may be taking the mickey. It would have been just as biased if they’d not allowed calls from people who were saying they’ve given up and just settled into benefit street.

He’s hardly going to be ‘living a relaxed life’ on UC as a single person with presumably no kids. He’ll be constantly skint and stressed about money

mumumental · 29/05/2026 19:39

Very sneaky to blame the BBC. Be honest and straightforward with people. That’s becoming too rare on this site.

ItsCoolForCats · 29/05/2026 21:22

To be fair, Nicky Campbell does sound sceptical when he says he is too much of a legal risk to be hired because he's trans. Although if he did have any problems at work, he would probably blame it on being trans, rather than any of the other issues he clearly has going on.

So this person isn't living the high life "funded by the taxpaying" they've just announced that's what they're intending to do.

They might find they don't qualify and it serms unlikely they'll be left alone to enjoy life even if they do.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 30/05/2026 19:35

It seems extremely likely that this person is delusional about the prospect of benefits as about other things in his life. (I say "he" because I can only go by the voice, which sounded male to me.)

Maybe, just maybe, it isn't the "potential legal risk" that is putting people off the prospect of employing him, but some other factor in his presentation of himself. You never know....
