A bill is being started in the NZ parliament. It is a bit ropey but passed its first reading in the house and they are now takin submissions.

Any suggestions would be great, but best wishes and support would also be great too .

Good luck!

I saw the video of the woman presenting it. She certainly seemed to understand the issue.

What a fabulous speech! Love the dig at the Aussies too 🤣

Supporterofwomensrights · 22/05/2026 07:39

Good luck. I'm interested in what's happening in NZ. I wish you all the very best.

PinkTonic · 22/05/2026 07:41

Great speech. I have 3 nieces in NZ and I’m cheering you on!

MrsOvertonsWindow · 22/05/2026 07:48

Wishing you all the best. What's being done to women's rights and child safeguarding the world over is terrifying.

Igmum · 22/05/2026 07:50

Good luck and here’s hoping NZ learns from it’s own experiences and those elsewhere 🤞

Great speech and fingers crossed from the other side of the world!

What do you think are its chances of being passed?

(Because I see she’s from the NZ-First party, which wiki tells me is “a rightwing populist party” which is nevertheless in a coalition government, so not complete pariahs. In general, would a bill they put forward normally have any chance of being passed by the majority or is this being done mainly to put the other parties on the spot, with little hope it will get through?)

Sending many good wishes to NZ for a positive outcome. Listening to this, it's impossible not to wonder how we've got to this awful point in history where the rights of men yet again push women into insignificance. No more - we've had enough.

Go, women of NZ!

All the very best to you all.

We are right here with you.

'The bill would amend the Legislation Act 2019 by adding a definition of “woman” as “an adult human biological female” and of “man” as “an adult human biological male”, with corresponding definitions for “male” and “female”.

According to the bill’s general policy statement, “the purpose of this amendment is to uphold legal certainty, protect the integrity of sex-based rights, and ensure that language in law reflects biological reality. This definition will apply in all contexts where the terms “woman” and “man” are used, unless explicitly stated otherwise in specific legislation”.'

Good luck women of NZ! Loved the reference to FWS in there, am forever grateful to those women.

Look NZ First are not ideal… they tend to drop the word “Woke” out of context for likes and Winston Peters is a shifty bugger with dubious funding.

But something has to be done- it’s getting too hard to ignore and they are the only party big enough to start the ball rolling.

Bonkers that the human race has had to come to this but strange times... Praying that sanity prevails.

HappilyHarriet · 22/05/2026 08:26

i know nothing about NZ politics, but ‘NZ first’ does not sound like a party I want to join.
I just hope other representatives see that if they go with this bill then they help nip this issue in the bud, preventing it from becoming a plus point for the right in future elections.

So very pleased to see this. An excellent speech.

One point of information - women's suffrage in NZ wasn't a principled decision, it was a mistake that was left to fix itself. Which it didn't. Political posturing if you like.

This is is taken from "Joseph on Administration and Constitutional Law" by Philip Joseph, page 190.

"New Zealand has experienced three periods of profound social and economic transition. Reformist state programmes were introduced from the beginning of the 1890s, from the mid 1930s and from the mid 1980s. Yet neither were these programmes the triumph of any state philosophy or doctrine. The first great reform period (1890-1900s) distinguished New Zealand as the "chosen land of the most daring experiments". The colony pioneered state regulation of labour disputes through conciliation and arbitration, and introduced a workers' compensation scheme and comprehensive factory and welfare legislation. But again, political opportunism rather than national planning was the driver. The celebrated electoral reform that enfranchised women in 1893 was, for the Liberal Government, unintentionally passed into law. Agitation by women's groups convinced Ballance to commit his Government to universal suffrage, although most ministers privately opposed the idea. After Ballance's death in 1893, an Electoral Bill was introduced and Sir John Hall moved an amendment to enfranchise women. Seddon, who had succeeded Ballance, let the Bill pass, confident the upper house would reject it and reap the consequent opprobrium. To the Government's surprise, the Bill was passed - women had the vote. "The Act was due ... not at all to a vote of principle", commented the French political observer, Andre Siegfried. Siegfried visited New Zealand in 1904 and was driven to dwell on its political tradition. He observed in its public figures a "contempt for theories" and an obsession for "immediate and practical results".
"What the New Zealanders most need", he wrote, "[were] principles, convictions, reasoned beliefs".

An interesting little nugget.

More power to your elbow, as we say in the UK.

HighSchoolTeacher · 22/05/2026 09:27

Like the Bill. Would vote for it.

Loath without reservation NZ First and despise Winston Peters who only ever does anything for himself. Do not imagine that this is being done for anything other than publicity and vote attraction in an election year.

Yes, I despair of the way even centrist parties seem so eager to hand this issue to the far right - why are so many of them prepared to die on that hill despite being unable to express clearly why they think that, and instead trying to shut down discussion with slogans or saying "it's wrong" and so on?

That attitude (in the US with the Dems but also in the UK, and elsewhere) has done so much to make the far right seem sane. Why are they doing that?

BiologicalRobot · 22/05/2026 10:24

Good luck NZ!! 💪❤
