My Irony-meter tops out: BBC’s new campaign on tackling disinformation: “Trust is Earned”

I choked on my cornflakes after seeing this:

They best start their mission inside the BBC then. The coverage on Womens rights has been appalling and has revealed the BBC as a state propaganda machine.

How these people see themselves versus how I seen them is quite different!

Despite growing up as a “BBC person” ive lost all trust in them and now it’s gone i cant see me ever getting it back.

We pursue the truth, so disinformation has nowhere to hide

They were barely punished for making things up about Trump because the PTB don't care about him. Which is understandable but it just shows how much they get away with. I'm very disappointed other media outlets didn't continue to tell the story about BBC propaganda.

Shame he hadnt sued them - was it $1bn he threatened?

I agree. Having seen their unbelievably biased output on a few issues now has made me question their accuracy and bias on everything.

They have thrown away their credibility and should be defunded/become a subscription service

Trump is currently suing the BBC. The BBC has applied for the case to be dismissed. If the BBC’s application for dismissal fails a trial will supposedly go ahead in 2027.

A similar case Trump brought against US media outlets was dismissed as the bar for libel in the US is very high (compared to the US) and legal commentators suggest a similar outcome for the beeb (IANAL!)

SionnachRuadh · 21/05/2026 10:21

It's almost impossible in the US for a public figure to successfully sue for libel. You pretty much have to prove egregious malice.

The only recent successful case I can remember is Johnny Depp v Amber Heard, and neither of those two came out of it looking good - one commentator summed it up as "just because he's an asshole doesn't mean she's not a liar".

"We will find its dangerous lies and expose them. The fight for truth is on."

Like the dangerous lie that men can be women perhaps..?...nah, I didn't think so.

The BBC are a complete joke at this point, they can get tae fuck.

This really is a bigger issue than gender ideology and the BBC.

And while it is also an issue across the right, I think it has a very peculiar twist across the progressive left spectrum because of the way that there is this real push to characterise other, be it other news sites, other institutions, other individuals, as purveyors of false news, while being totally blind to their the fact that they also have lost the public trust.

It's was a massive issue around covid where there were all kinds of accusations of people being anti-science while also resolutely avoiding any messaging from the scientific community that didn't support the correct "facts".

I have really noticed it on reddit - which is a pit but does give a window into the thinking of a certain group of people - with regard to the BBC treatment of Trump - flat out denial that it was possible followed by a denial that it was serious, and an almost total lack of understanding of normal standards of journalism, for decades, around things like splicing together footage.

I've seen similar with the reddit communities that follow the CBC here in Canada. Any criticism is shouted down as right wing people who hate the CBC and its spotless reputation. Even a book by one of the most venerable of CBC personalities was treated that way, as if the author was some right wing agitator out to destroy the national broadcaster. Not even recognising that no, this was the producer/host for decades on a flagship intellectual radio show, one of the people who created the reputation of the CBC in the first place. And no understanding why so man people who used to be listeners no longer trust them.

I've found it really difficult to understand where this kind of blindness comes from. But I do think it may be the same phenomena that has prevented left wing parties being able to respond to the public on issues they care about in recent years.

It reminds me most of the idea of prelest, in the Orthodox Church, which is a state of spiritual delusion that affects people who believe they are holier than they actually are. It's considered one of the most dangerous delusions because people will do so much evil when they believe they are doing so for righteous reasons, and they can often mislead others and destroy good institutions as well.

I've just read this on BBC news

York Pride organisers not put off by homophobic letter - BBC News https://share.google/JHjcOW28Cy8vXreR1

Shame on whoever sent the letter.

Earlier I was reading a MN thread with a poster whose contributions had all been removed. Reading replies provided evidence of the type of abuse they/them had been spouting. It's not unusual to come across this on the FWR board. Then there's the stuff saved on Terf is a Slur. The banners carried in T demonstrations (perhaps we'll see some at York Pride). JKR said she could wallpaper her house with the death threats. Don't see much about that on the Beeb.
