Questions over whether Kenny Gibson cut a deal with the Scottish Greens to secure his appointment by promising to enforce gender pronouns in the Holyrood chamber

Kenny Gibson said that he would not tolerate politicians refusing to use the chosen pronouns of the newly elected Green MSPs Iris Duane and Q Manivannan.

However, critics said he should not compel MSPs to "deny reality" and "perpetuate a dangerous lie that harms women and children".

Foolish, surely, as there’s no way of legally enforcing coerced speech?

Seriestwo · 18/05/2026 23:17

this is ludicrous

ThatZanyFatball · 18/05/2026 23:33

Wait but I thought forced speech wasn't happening and wasn't even a thing? Is this another case of things that don't happen... Happening?

Igmum · 19/05/2026 08:22

I suspect that one is going to be put to the test at a pretty early stage. Not a sensible ruling but might be entertaining 🍿

It feels like a good time for another billboard campaign. KJK could combine her AHF with a sort of “He’s a man” montage.

I expect they could claim ongoing use of non preferred pronouns (rather than hedging around it, or occasionally forgetting) constitutes harassment, or something like that?

Didn't the Forstater judgement have something to say about this?

viques · 19/05/2026 14:53

Don’t MSPs have Parliamentary Privilege when speaking in the Chamber?

That sounds familiar, I think insisting on refusing to use preferred pronouns is considered unacceptable behaviour [not sure if the terminology was 'harassment'].

I'd like to see that tested. Which is more harassing -
refusing to use a person's preferred pronouns because you believe they are grammatically incorrect and/or because of their ideological connotations
OR
insisting on someone using your preferred pronouns although they believe they are grammatically incorrect and/or because of their ideological connotations ?

Who's zoomin' who?

Isn't it usual to refer to other members by name when speaking in Parliament?

Is it different in the Scottish Parliament?

SirChenjins · 19/05/2026 16:28

And in turn, I'm sure he's reinforced the right of MSPs to hold and express GC views? In the interest of fairness and all that.

ArabellaScott · 19/05/2026 16:32

Gibson was one of the very, very few SNP MSPs to vote against the GRR Bill.

In the House of Commons it's only the Speaker who refers to members by name when calling them to speak or when disciplining them. The MPs never refer to one another by their actual names during debates, instead using their constituency (Honourable Member for XXX) or official title (Prime Minister etc).

ArabellaScott · 19/05/2026 16:48

'Wings Over Scotland blogger Stuart Campbell responded in typical fashion when he said: "Well that's a great f*ing start."'

😂

That's actually what I meant. It seems as though it's important to be specific so that the conversation can be accurately documented in the official record.

ArabellaScott · 19/05/2026 18:13

Hahahaha!

Fucking perfect. The bunch of utter twits. I cannot believe they're being paid for this farcical bullshit.

Scottish parliament removes 'sex' category from website after two trans MSPs elected

Following complaints, the entire “gender” category was removed from the official Holyrood website - erasing all historic and current information about gender balance in the parliament.

A Scottish parliament spokesman said the data had been removed as part of its Inclusive Parliament Review.

Isn't it interesting that trans representation isn't important after all the shouting from the rooftops about two trans msps.

Surely in order that people can accurately see who is trans so they can judge the representation/ oppression they should be proudly identified as such on the website rather than being invisibly absorbed into the wrong category, or hidden completely with no categories?

But this logic is undermined by the trans absolutist position that because they really have "changed" sex they absolutely must be recorded as the "sex" they claim they are.

Effectively the word trans should never be alluded to.
