Trans rights activists launched a peaceful protest outside Waterstones in Guildford this afternoon (May 16), chalking messages on the pavement to draw people’s attention to the company’s marketing of Harry Potter merchandise.

Protest group Defund Transphobes says Harry Potter author JK Rowling uses money from the sale of merchandise to fund what they describe as her “anti trans campaign”.

Bella is quite clearly a parody account in the same vein as Dame Katy Denise. I hope they stick around, they've given me a good chuckle.

How very dare you mock Dame Katy!!!!! She's a goddess among women!
Whilst Bella.......(or should that be Bellatrix???)

(Light hearted)

Because it is about standing up for what is right and not making a prestigious bookstore feel unsafe for members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

What, as an unsafe as women imprisoned alongside a male? Or females expected to share a hospital ward with a male who identifies as a woman?

How do trans people feel unsafe in a bookstore? Who’s threatening them?

its "literary" violence. 😂

I thought they were a satire account???

Exactly!

<eyeroll>
If what Waterstones is doing makes you feel 'unsafe', you really need to woman up and get a grip.

Unless you are a parody account, in which case crack on.

It's just become so hard to tell...

Strikes (see what I did there?)me that Bella hasn't looked "too deeply" into anything! Has she/he even read what JKR wrote about womens' rights/TP?
No I guess not. Not the brightest bulb in the spares drawer
As for unsafe in a bookstore! Please. Get a Grip

She's probably scared that The Monster Book of Monsters is going to chomp on her.

Asunciondeflata · 17/05/2026 12:13

It's ironic that the poster has accused someone of reading Mein Kampf, as some sort of "gotcha", but that will be lost on them.
For it is these activists who are more like Nazis; they want to ban books and ban people, there's only one acceptable way to think, they're intolerant and bigoted, they don't respect women's rights.
I suspect that mass book burning would be right up their street.

Would you remove Byron's poetry?

But.. but.. their brave and stunning chalk drawings implore us to “read ANY book but Harry Potter” and defund “him”…. So any book, which would include any of JKR’s? 🤨
Bless their hearts, there’s not been a lot of thinking there has there?

Good grief. They really should read Mein Kampf and think...is this what we are?

If you went thru every shelf in a Waterstones and pulled out booked and in this case, merchandise from anyone who had said anything anti anything - something they maybe shouldn’t have
then there would be a lot of gaps on the shelves
people like Harry Potter and If they like it they aren’t likely to even think about Rowlings comments

it would be like if the owners of M&S made a comment - would I stop buying my knickers in there - no I wouldn’t!

people also need to think of the shop staff in all of this!

My reading group have him on the list of banned authors (alongside she who shall not be named incidentally so take note Waterstones). I haven't looked too deeply into it but from what I've been told he has written some things that are deeply offensive to the Islamic Community. My reading group is full of very open and commited progressive folks so I trust their judgement.

Oh dear 😄

I think "open" is debatable....

Anyway I'm genuinely lol-ing at the idea of trans people walking into Waterstones and immediately fainting clean away at the sight of a broomstick or lightning scar on a book cover.

Take note!

Waterstones makes people unsafe by stocking HP books and memorabilia? How do you think death and rape threats from TRA's makes women feel?

Fgfgfg · 17/05/2026 13:41

InstantlyBella · 17/05/2026 06:44

Why am I not surprised that you actually have books written by Salmon Rushdie. Do you have a copy of Mein Kahmpf too by any chance?

Thats Me I Know GIF by Jackie James

Me! Me! I do!
I also have the collected works of Chairman Mao (quite a few volumes actually) and a few things by Stalin and a degree in political philosophy.

Lins77 · 17/05/2026 13:42

I was under the impression that "Defund X" calls referred to a withdrawal of public funding. It seems strange in this context.

Anyway, attempts to "defund" JKR seem destined to failure, even if everyone stopped buying Harry Potter immediately. Which they obviously won't. Most HP (and Strike) fans have little if any interest in the trans "debate".

EarthlyNightshade · 17/05/2026 13:52

InstantlyBella · 17/05/2026 06:30

Would you say that to a Muslim if Waterstones stocked a book by notorious Islamophobe Salmon Rushdie? I think you would rightfully find that hurtful and offensive, which is the same for trans people who have their identity disregarded by stocking books written by that woman.

Are you thinking here that Waterstones doesn't stock books by Salman Rushdie? (they do) Do you know Muslims who have complained about it?

I assume you don't shop there - where do you buy books if you have to avoid such places?

Capitalists would be offended by Marx.

Jews might be offended by the New Testament.

Men might be offended by Wollenstonecraft or Greer.

You can probably find all of these books in your local library. If we as a society follow your (apparently trustworthy) book group and ban books where does it end. Read A Man for All Seasons. Would you give the devil the benefit of due course of law? Yes, because otherwise the law will be devalued and will not be there to support me when I need it.

Your book group is damaging society and has already damaged you because you have outsourced your thinking to the clerics. And yes I have read Mein Kampf. Not because I’m a card carrying Nazi but because I did a History degree. I have also read Marx.

My mind is blown at the idea of anyone who cares enough about reading to be in a book group but who has never read anything from a perspective they knew they disagreed with and has outsourced their thinking to the right kind of people.

I refuse to click links that take me to unheard of websites (from the OP) but is your picture from that website?

So it's not defund JKR, but it's actually defund a fictional character? Strewth 😮🤐

Edited because I misread something.

"feel unsafe" 😂

The books aren't going to jump off the shelves and concuss anyone with pastel-dyed hair and a progress pride pin.

A reading group that bans books.

Make it make sense….

Yes I would.

I grew up bisexual under Section 28. I know what "unsafe" is. An example of "unsafe" is when your teachers do nothing about lesbophobic bullying because they are worried about falling foul of Section 28 and also agree with the bullies. A bookshop stocking a book I disagree with is not "unsafe".

And this, dear reader, is how echo chambers and purity spirals are formed.

I trust their judgement

Pro-tip: don't outsource your thinking to others. Never trust anyone else's judgement. Always look at stuff for yourself and make your own mind up. Otherwise you risk being manipulated by other people for their own ends.
