Trans rights activists launched a peaceful protest outside Waterstones in Guildford this afternoon (May 16), chalking messages on the pavement to draw people’s attention to the company’s marketing of Harry Potter merchandise.

Protest group Defund Transphobes says Harry Potter author JK Rowling uses money from the sale of merchandise to fund what they describe as her “anti trans campaign”.

Can't read 1984 - it's probably transphobic because reasons (Terfs mentioned it that one time)

It definitely is. Big Brother demands that people deny what they can clearly see to be true. (2+2 = 5) And Orwell seems to think that's a bad thing!

for trans people who have their identity disregarded by stocking books written by that woman
How is it actually possible to be this self absorbed??
Your identity appears to be a very fragile thing indeed, bless you.
How do people live like this?!

It is 100% a wind-up.

“Banned books”. You’d fit it very well with Trump’s MAGA lot.

“feeling unsafe in Waterstones”. Well, Harry Potter books are pretty large and if one fell on you from an upper shelf, you might hurt your head.
May I suggest you wear a crash helmet/tinfoil hat/ cotton wool, inorder to feel safe?

To be fair, the one at High Street Ken has very narrow stairs. I always have to hang on tightly to the bannister.

thirdfiddle · 17/05/2026 17:46

I hope they're left well alone, or moved on by police if they block public access to a business.
In the unlikely event Waterstones decide to shoot themselves in the foot and unstock one of the most successful franchises they sell, we can have our own protests. Or just take our custom elsewhere really. Parents buy quite a lot of books.

I very much doubt it.

This is exactly the mindset of these silly people.

I can only imagine how much fun that book club would be. Once everyone's stated whatever their pronouns are today they can get down to the serious business of virtue signalling their progressiveness and ensuring that only 'safe' texts are read.

This month's compliant text: Spot The Dog (subject to approval that having to lift the flaps isn't going to cause any repetitive strain injury or discriminate against anyone). Emotional support blankets will be provided.

On the original subject of the 'protest', it's nice to see them getting out of the house. Fresh air and some drawing with their crayons, it'll do them good I'm sure.

But ... Spot the Dog promotes an exclusionary dog-centric worldview that makes cats feel unsafe. 😿

"
My reading group have him on the list of banned authors"

"My reading group is full of very open and commited progressive folks"

Spot the (deliberate?) mistake.
Both of these statements cannot be true.

Ah but it depends what you're progressing towards doesn't it <taps nose>

A brave new world where thinking is outsourced to the righteous leaders - bang on track!

Did you assume that Spot identifies as a dog?

My reading group have him on the list of banned authors (alongside she who shall not be named incidentally so take note Waterstones). I haven't looked too deeply into it but from what I've been told he has written some things that are deeply offensive to the Islamic Community. My reading group is full of very open and commited progressive folks so I trust their judgement.

Your " progressive" book group has a list of banned authors? Pathetic

Or Bagpuss 😳

And let's not get started on Mr Benn. All that dressing up - who knows what other outfits he could have had in mind? <clutches pearls>

I can't dislodge the stereotype of "The Blue Rinse Brigade" from my brain, so every time I see those washed-out blue and lilac headed young women it makes me think of rows and rows of twinset-and-pearls-with-white-gloved-hands-clutching-handbags-on-laps-and-twinkly-Mrs-Merton-specs at Tory party conferences of yore.

That and Mrs Slocombe. That would be a better look for Waterstones staff to scare off the burly piss-tossers.

Oh, I loved Mrs Slocombe! And her pussy 😂 She would've had a few words to say to TRAs, no doubt.

Because it is about standing up for what is right and not making a prestigious bookstore feel unsafe for members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

For goodness sake please do not use “unsafe” in that way. Of course any trans person, or gay man, or lesbian woman or person who considers themselves to be ‘queer’, or asexual or has a difference of sexual development etc is safe in a Waterstones bookshop.

And there is no LGBTQIA + “community”.

If I hear one more person use the idea of Harry Potter merchandise or books or any other harmless object making people feel "unsafe", I will scream. The rest of society doesn't exist to featherbed the alphabet "community" or any other group. All you do by perpetuating this idea is to infantilise people who need in fact to be encouraged to learn to cope with things that may upset them, just as the rest of us have to.

Not to mention Snatch the dog. I mean the jokes write themselves.

Side note
The woman who invented Snatch had to change his name in America to Patch.

Comeinsideforacupoftea · 17/05/2026 23:01

There is a massive TV series of the Harry Potter books being released later this year. Many kids (including my own) are still discovering it and loving it. It's honestly going nowhere. Tolerance works both ways. You cannot demand to be acknowledged as something you're objectively not. You can ask. You can disengage with people if they won't play along but you cannot demand it. The HP books are flippin children's books that teach absolutely no hatred or prejudiced ideology (in fact quite the opposite). You cannot claim that they make you feel unsafe whilst simultaneously intimidating entire businesses to stop selling them. Your right to not be offended doesn't trump anyone's right to voice an opinion.

Spot’s just a symbol of the patriarchy innit. Just like Percy Pig and Colin the Catterpillar
