Sex crimes against women have been cut after police deployed live facial recognition (LFR) cameras in a town centre, data show.

Static cameras with the technology were deployed for the first time as part of a six-month pilot in Croydon town centre in south London from October 2025 to March 2026.

<a class="break-all" href="https://archive.is/o/t2hej/www.telegraph.co.uk/metropolitan-police-service" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The Metropolitan Police said the pilot led to an overall crime rate reduction of 10.5 per cent in the area, compared with the same period last year.

The biggest reduction in crime was in offences involving violence against women and girls, which saw a 21 per cent drop during the six-month period

(I think the article title is a bit misleading ie it didn't stop any acts of violence, but helped police find men who were know to be violent, in breach of bail conditions etc.. ie identifying people who already have a convition.)

... live facial recognition is set to be used for the first time in policing a protest.

The Metropolitan Police has said it will use it at the Tommy Robinson-led Unite the Kingdom rally on Saturday.

Cameras will be set up in a location that is not on the route of the march, but is expected to be used by a lot of people attending the event.

There remain more than 50 outstanding and unidentified suspects after violent clashes between police and protesters at the previous Unite the Kingdom event in September. ...
