Help! Looking for Spanish gender critical sources for an essay on La llamada de Lauren for uni student.

My middle child is studying languages at uni, is in Year 1, and has been asked to write an essay about the Spanish play La Ilamada de Lauren. The play summary explains that the husband wants to 'embody Lauren Bacall', and the wife originally 'views his cross dressing as a sexual fetish...' It includes a scene where the husband tries to force the woman to use a phallus on him. The summary helpfully points out that the play is a 'literal staging of Judith Butler's theory of gender performativity'. sigh

It would be a great help if MC could have some gender critical work in Spanish to include in the essay. Are there any learned Mumsnet feminists who might be able to point to such a thing? MC is not confident about mailing the course tutor to ask for pointers.

If the play is “a literal staging of Judith Butler's [source material in English] theory of gender performativity” could the GC material referred to by your child not also be in English? That is to say, as long as your child writes in Spanish, surely they could reference material written originally in any language?

MC was asking for Spanish sources, but will also suggest that English sources would be a help. MC would much rather be reading Don Quixote, but they don't study it on the course.

Does it have to be critiques of Butler or would all gender critical material be useful. Written or online?

The gender critical support group in Spain is called amanda - amandafamilias.org. They have activist literature.

This is the embodiment of the Long March through the Institutions.

I'd probably complain about being asked to read BDSM material in a language course and request something less perverted.

I am studying French and if my tutor asked me to write an essay on a perverted text I'd tell them that no, I am not reading perverted wank fest material nor write more wank fodder for them and to up their game.

This is slightly random, but this (older) article comparing blackface to drag was linked in a different thread. Not in Spanish, but it’s a really clear and thoughtful read and counters some Butlerian flapdoodle quite nicely (also it refs other papers that might be helpful):

Thanks. Anything MC could look at I think! And thanks for your help already.

Indeed. MC has already had to have a word about some of the extremely triggering (violent/sexual content) films they've had to watch. And no trigger warnings!

Wait you are asking for help researching your university aged child's essay??? Because they are triggered? And people are actually responding to you?

Wowsers, this is a whole new level of parental over involvement

Ha! We were just having a chat about it, and MC was nervous about asking the lecturer for GC resources because institutional capture. So I said I'd ask the vipers, and they've come up trumps.

Don't you think she needs to do these things for herself? It is good to learn these skills

We were chatting. I thought Mumsnet might be able to help. So that's what I did. He's grateful and is learning all sorts of study skills for himself. He doesn't have an account here.

I think you're over invested in your adult son's gender critical-ness, but I guess if it makes you both happy...

Distractable · 13/05/2026 17:14

I like that we agree on this subject, but it's not essential (not all my kids are GC and we all have good relationships). I like to be a supportive mum for my kids and I'm really enjoying relating to them as young adults, although I wish there was less moving and storing of piles of their stuff involved. So yes, we're both happy. Although not about that dreadful play being set instead of classic Spanish literature that would be far more of a help for learning about Spanish culture and history.
