‘Health Tourism’ ‘Top Surgery’ in Turkey

There’s a new Dr Sibh in town (just one example of a previous thread about her here) https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/4651413-dr-sibh-gallagher-reported-to-ftc-for-false-promotion-of-surgeries?flipped=1&page=2
She’s the Irish plastic surgeon based in Miami responsible for hundreds and hundreds of top surgeries on young women - or ‘yeeting the teets’ as she affectionately calls double mastectomies.

I recently noticed on Instagram that several UK-based teenagers/young adult women, were travelling to Turkey to have double mastectomies. The same place kept cropping up and appearing on these individual’s threads. It would appear that a cheery transman representative of this clinic, regularly travels to the UK, attending Pride events in places like Brighton , and promoting their services. They seem to be doing the rounds in several European cities. They also promote themselves by commenting on the individual’s post-op Instagram threads as they share their ‘chest reveals’.

The advertising is cutesy and basically sells it like a fun holiday abroad, with limo pick-ups from the airport, a quick bit of major surgery and a few sightseeing boat-trips thrown in - ‘health tourism’ they call it.

There are some awkward testimonials from quite young ‘patients’ on their page - many Italians and many British. It is utterly depressing. Some seem so painfully awkward and shy, and it’s obvious that many of them have never even been abroad before. Imagine your first trip abroad involving the removal of your breasts?

I don’t know why I’m posting other than to express my horror that such major surgery is being promoted so casually. And I’m also so disappointed that many young people from the UK are travelling to Turkey for these ops - some with a parent or mate in tow, others alone. They even have a ‘buddy deal’ where if you and your mate come along and get operated on on the same day, you get 10% off.

It just makes me feel uncomfortable - I’ve no idea how much counselling they get beforehand - it’s not mentioned in their jolly reels. You can see for yourself if you look up nedadeniz health tourism agency (without the gaps - I didn’t want to link to it directly as I wasn’t sure if that was allowed?)

How is aftercare dealt with once they’ve flown back home? What if there are complications - does the NHS have to deal with it? And I’m guessing it costs in the region of at least 8-10 grand? Surely they can’t all be funded by GoFundMes (although there are loads of them being promoted on Insta) I don’t do TikTok but they also promote their services heavily on there as a few of the patients said they learned about the surgeon on there.

I know people will argue about bodily autonomy but I really fear that many of these young people aren’t thinking through the long term consequences of their actions.

"Health tourism" is one of those weaselly phrases like "gender-affirming care", "top surgery", "bottom surgery", which cover up major surgery with life-long implications. It's not done for "health" and it is certainly not "care".

"Yeeting the teats" make me want to be sick in my own mouth. Jesus Christ.

The NHS won't fund aftercare, however they will treat someone who becomes unwell and requires emergency care (as far as I understand).

I travelled abroad - to Turkey actually - for surgery - and have absolutely zero regrets. It changed my life. HOWEVER, I'm a middle aged woman with a professional background in healthcare (as in a qualified clinician, not a 'wellness' specialist) and took what I'd consider to be a calculated risk based on as much information I could find. I was also very clear on my expectations about aftercare, looking after myself while I was there, and what would be expected of me if I had complications on my return home.

Promoting the mutilation of young women's bodies and the undertaking of invasive surgery abroad as a cutesy fun holiday where you get to ditch your pesky boobies is abhorrent.

My YP went alone. I was so shocked. I hadn’t realised how concrete her plans were and how soon she’d be doing it. I wrongly assumed she’d need more time to save, and she was talking about giving up smoking.

Oh Prize that’s so sad - to feel so utterly powerless. I think in the days of thousands and thousands of our young people being in massive debt with student loans, the idea of being in debt to 10k mightn’t freak them out in the way it would have done a young person in the past. It’s normalised. Stick it on credit, throw in a holiday, meet like-minded people all reinforcing the fact that what you are doing is something to be celebrated - a lethal combination.

How is your young person doing - are they happy with the results?

Having had a DMX myself, this is quite alarming.
Mine was done on the NHS after a breast cancer diagnosis that also found I was a BRCA2 fault carrier, so both had to go and I had zero interest in reconstruction. I don’t understand how they can do this on the cheap in Turkey with pretty much zero aftercare. Even with two drains I developed an infected seroma on one side that required antibiotics and had to be aspirated. It’s bad enough with the ‘Turkey teeth’ that potentially leave you needing full dentures in ten years, but this will kill someone. I’m not even going to suggest potentially kill someone, it will happen, it’s just a matter of time.
I really, really dislike the way blockers, hormones and major surgery are talked about so glibly by so many within the trans movement, the long term effects are going to be awful.

Tigerbalmshark · 30/04/2026 13:39

Unfortunately this is the case for all kinds of overseas surgery - we also see patients going abroad to buy kidney transplants and returning £20k lighter and having been butchered (outcomes are dreadful because they will put any kidney into any patient, and they are punted back to the UK for us to pick the pieces up pretty much as soon as they are out of bed).

Unfortunately some healthcare systems have far fewer ethical and legal checks and balances than the NHS - if you can pay for it you can have it, and informed consent about the risks isn’t really a thing. Unethical surgeons prey on people’s naivety. Anyone advertising specifically to overseas customers is pretty dodgy, IMO.

‘George’, who gives a video testimonial on March 27th, looks soooo young - like they should still be at school. Shy and nervous, leg bouncing - I can’t believe they’ve taken their money and their healthy breasts from them. Not sure if they did a ‘Buddy’ deal with the teen whose testimonial immediately follows below from the same date? I could weep 😥

I haven’t seen her yet, @2016NotATeen . I only found out 3 weeks ago. I must plan something but have to finagle the diary first.
