Not just one, but two! With glorious photos too. 💃🏻

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c33l12z3854o

A woman in her mid-20s with shoulder-length dark hair and sunglasses on top of her head is smiling at the camera. She is wearing a white and black checked top. On her lap is her toddler son who is wearing a grey Hot Wheels Racing hoodie.

Chaos and hope felt in Essex ahead of 2026 local elections

Voters give their views on politics in two areas of Essex that will be highly contested.

I'm pretty sure the photo isn't a random stock image, but a photo of one of the people who were interviewed.

musicalfrog · 07/04/2026 16:24

They are definitely photos of the people spoken to.

I wonder why they went into a drag venue for opinions when there are probably a hundred others to choose from?

I've heard its because the want to prove they speak to a cross section of the public, and drag is the easiest way to signal LGBTQ+. Drag usually accounts for at least 3 of the letters.

My money is on a reporter being curious about the scene, and using any excuse to have a chat with someone about it.

HermioneWeasley · 07/04/2026 16:33

FFS. They continue to stick 2 fingers up at us

ScrollingLeaves · 07/04/2026 16:33

Why did they call the drag artist “she”? Isn’t the point of drag that a he dresses up and pretends to be a she for fun?

musicalfrog · 07/04/2026 16:55

Why indeed @ScrollingLeaves

They do it to wind us up, I think.

Jo Palmer Tweed is also (or was) the owner of an organisation that educates teachers so as-well as being big into the LGBT she is also quite prominent in education. Does anyone remember a few years back there was a teacher who worked in a girls private school who refused to use they/them pronouns? I have a strange feeling her name cropped up then.

Waitwhat23 · 07/04/2026 17:58

I'm not at all surprised that one of the areas is Colchester, given the TRA hold there, particularly at the Mercury Theatre.

MarieDeGournay · 07/04/2026 23:31

In my innocence, I thought that 'asking the obligatory drag queen for a comment about world affairs' was a joke. I didn't think they literally did it!

This is self parody, isn't it?

SionnachRuadh · 08/04/2026 09:50

It's fast becoming a BBC trademark.

Now you're messing with my mind, SionnachRuadh -is that real or not?🤔

This could be a fun quiz: a whole lot of headlines and you get points for correctly IDing the spoof ones. Tricky, as I found out earlier with the title of this thread😁

'North Korea tensions: we spoke to Seoul's drag queens'

'Chaos and hope felt ahead of local elections: we spoke to a drag queen over a cocktail in the Dragonfly Lounge bar'

'Sustainability of life on the moon: we spoke to a drag queen wearing an orange jump suit as an homage to the Artemis mission crew'

'Crisis in the Middle East: is calling it the 'Strait' of Hormuz cisheteronormative? we spoke to a drag queen...'

MsGreying · 07/04/2026 16:21

We can all see that it's a man (despite the BBC's gaslighting).

Waitwhat23 · 08/04/2026 10:23

On searching for suitable quiz headlines as suggested above, I found this article which has probably been posted before but seemed relevant -

thecritic.co.uk/why-is-the-bbc-so-obsessed-with-drag/

StillSpartacus · 08/04/2026 10:54

We know that it’s all about normalising kink, but at a guess the BBC will also be looking for an angle that doesn’t promote Reform. They may have naively assumed that drag queens are a better fit with their political world view than a bloke in the pub.

Personally, I’m not quite so confident that your average MRA is a fluffy, soft-hearted liberal, but I’m not a BBC researcher.

Forresty · 08/04/2026 11:33

Won't somebody think of the drag queens!! 😩

BlueSkiesAndSunshiiine · 08/04/2026 11:46

Why are the BBC so obsessed with drag queens? It's weird.

Yes I heard the same explanation. A BBC producer (who iirc is gay himself) explaining how they need to evidence on-screen diversity.

That’s why it’s not enough just to have gay people amongst their interviewees (who would know?). The gay person must be relocated to a gay bar, or have a flag, or be introduced with their partner. With a trans person or drag queen you don’t need to have that awkward tokenising conversation, because it’s obvious already.

Tunnockstester · 08/04/2026 19:49

Seems to me that on vox pop and phone ins there are more male voices. Presumably the BBC attempts to get equality between the sexes when asking for comment? I wonder which sex they put the drag artists and TIMs into? I bet they are counted as female in order to get the numbers up.

They also need to up the gay representation right now, because of the huge holes in the iPlayer created by memory holing every show Scott Mills has ever appeared in.
