Supreme Court strikes down Colorado's ban on conversion therapy - BBC News https://share.google/0Im3b3neBUNoO5bUY

On freespeech grounds. It's only one state. I don't know if it'll affect the other states that have these bans.

Yes, Supreme Court rulings - like the Constitution - apply to every state.

"Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson was the only one to dissent... "

How sweet. Our very own version of Isla Bumba. 😩

Good to hear, I'm sure the US has a whole load of law's that can be used against people who are using coercive methods to make someone comply to a proscribed behaviour, just like we do. There's no need for a conversion ban law, especially one that's created by a group that have their own agenda.

With these kinds of cases it's always good to read Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson's dissents. They demonstrate someone who is hopelessly captured, completely immune to rational arguments from the opposing side, and willing to elevate unhinged ideology above the law. Imagine a Supreme Court with 9 justices like her.

The laws of most states that banned conversion therapy only applied to minors. The laws were designed to protect minors from being forced by their parents (or, often, one parent when their parents were divorced and disagreed about this matter) to go to therapy to change their sexual orientation or gender identity. Generally, parents would have that right so the laws you're talking about wouldn't help. (That leads to other questions about the desired scope of parental authority but it's the reason these states felt like these laws were needed.) DC's law also applies to adults.

This article has a good map of the laws of various states:
